Johan was an amazing host and this location was the perfect cozy get away! The room is so cozy and the outdorr cook area is delightful! The breakfast provided is so yummy and nice! This is such a restful and claming place to stay! I cant say enough good things about it!! Everyone should stay here is they are considering it :)
Magical, whimsical and everything you could ever imagine! Johan is a fantastic host, you can tell that this is his passion project. We loved the attention to detail on everything. Wish we could have stayed every night of our vacation here. With that said it was the perfect pairing for the night before our visit to Hobbiton. We felt like we truly lived in the Shire and were taking a day trip to Hobbiton! 10/10 we will stay again when we come back to New Zealand!
The place is amazing, like living in a fairy, you can get all you need in this romantic world. The host is kind and helpful. it’s worthy to have a try.
Attention to detail for everything was upstanding! Although small, there was a full size bed, outdoor kitchen, indoor kitchen, seating area to relax either indoors or outdoors, shower, toilet, and storage hooks which are so underrated in vacation rentals to have a good way to stash your stuff out of the way. We had a wonderful visiting kitty, chicken, and situated in an apple tree orchard with Gandalf’s wagon. Johan has amazing woodworking skills and put the whole thing together in some sort of wizardry himself. Truly a dream stay!
The property was perfectly appointed with timeless rustic charm and lovely touches all over the place. The facilities were just what we needed for cooking inside and out, great fireplace and high pressure shower. Loved the homemade jam and bread.
It truly was a unique and charming hole in the ground experience. Definitely a fun accommodation choice for those interested in the local tourist attractions. The farm fresh feijoas were a nice touch too :)

Im obsessed with LOTRs and this was absolutely perfect for a hobbit hole. So charming and cute. I wish i could have stayed longer and could build one for myself.
Cute little windows with awesome views. Really feels like a hobbit hole dug into the ground. Super warm with the fire on. Delicious breakfast with what I think is homemade jam provided. Would highly recommend

It was an interesting and unique experience. Directions to property were a problem. The address, phone number and a map should be on the web site. We got directions from the i-site in Cambridge otherwise we would have been lost' It also should be clearer that one should bring some barbecue food & wine for dinner as no eating places nearby.
What can I say - what a cool idea! The owner (and his daughter) obviously care very much about the experience. The communication was great - instructions were clear on how to gain access. They checked in frequently to see if everything was okay, and they have just the cutest animals (included an adorable black and white cat) that really add to the farmstay experience.
There are some issues that are very out of their hands - it rained quite badly one of the nights and we had to deal with a bit of a slug infestation (that was easily taken care of) and then the bugs that just come hand in hand with our a farm experience.
The home made bread and jams were amazing. The bacon and eggs provided were delicious. The obvious care and attention to detail really made for an awesome experience.
If you’re looking for a big chain hotel experience - skip this one. But if you’re looking for a cozy, cottage-like hobbit-hole - this is a must do, especially for any lord of the rings fan!

About the host
Hosted by Johan van der Gaag
I'm originall from the Netherlands and immigrated in 1984 with my wife and 2 children. after 38 years in horticulture my daughter took over the business.(Rivendell Gardens) about 9 years ago I wanted a Hobbit Hole so I made one, last year I build a bedroom and bathroom onto it and rent it out as a B&B , love to connect with people.
Why they chose this property
It's in a rural area with lots of trees around the Hobbit Hole
What makes this property unique
You won’t forget the peaceful surroundings of this rustic destination.
Spend a night in a real "Hobbit hole" in the middle of the Waikato. Close to Hobbiton (25 minute drive) Situated between my grapes and the Feijoa orchard. Everything is Hobbit sized and very rustic. Comes with a nice breakfast with homemade bread and bacon and eggs (own chickens) and homemade jams. There's and outdoor area made totally of pallet wood where you have the opportunity to cook, have a BBQ and have a dining area.
Only suited for one or 2 persons (pets only at prior approval, service animals are ok).
We (since 1984) are Rivendell Gardens, growing tomatoes, capsicum, beans, courgettes etc. for the local farmers' markets.
Named 'Rivendell Gardens' because of the Lords Of The Rings. One day I just wanted a Hobbit Hole, so I made one.
That was about 9 years ago, later on I extended the space with a bedroom and bathroom to be able to rent it out as a B&B.
Everything is Hobbit sized and pretty rustic. I mainly used recovered wood or wood I milled myself.
You are allowed all over the place but not close to the house, My Daughter and family live there and like their privacy.
If you need help, just come to the red shed and I'm happy to help with whatever you need.
In a very rural environment, very quiet. 7 Km out of Cambridge.
We are on a non-exit road, plenty of parking, very rural.
About 25 minutes from Hobbiton, so you can visit the movie set and spend a night in a real "Hobbit Hole"
