Spectacular property and perfect location

Our stay at Somavilla exceeded our expectations. The property is stunning, and immersed in fascinating history. The house felt like a home, with all of the amenities we needed and more. The location was stunning, with just a short trip to the local town and multiple vineyards and super close to Siena and Fiorenze for day trips. We cannot recommend this place enough.

Our party of 9 adults two toddlers and a baby had a great holiday at Sommavilla. This quirky house retains much of its history while providing the amenities one expects such as air con in the bedrooms, good bathrooms, and a range of kitchen equipment. Steep stairs between floors should be noted and also the open spaced rails on the main balcony. Stefano is a charming host always available to offer help or advice. The housekeeper and her husband do a good job of maintaining the house and grounds. Josefa also cooked some nice dinners for us during our stay. The location in the midst of olive groves and forest is really beautiful and we enjoyed the views particularlly from the pool during the day and the main balcony at the end of the day where we most often had dinner. The village of Castelina is a great resource just five minutes drive with excellent cafes, restaurants and shops and there are some great wineries close by. It is also a very central location with easy access to all the key Tuscan destinations. One negative was the number of horseflies and mosquitos, which made relaxing by the pool, using the table tennis, or the terrace in the evening tricky. The local pharmacist did say that the temperatures early this summer had made it a worse problem than usual, but some good insect spray is essential! This last problem was clearly outside Stefano's control and does not stop me from giving his house a positive review as a great destination for a large group or family.

Charm, character, and peaceful views!

Our family of seven adults plus one infant loved our stay in this charming villa. Even with the high temperatures of July we were able to find cooler and shaded areas throughout the property to enjoy the stunning views morning, noon, and night. This place had enough modern amenities to keep us comfortable while also providing the unique character we were looking for with our stay in the Chianti region. Some family favorites included using the pool, playing on the pool table downstairs, and hiring a chef recommended by the owner for an unforgettable final evening of our stay. Stefano's communication before and during the stay was so helpful and we hope to find ourselves staying here again in the future.

It is difficult to distinguish between the villa and our holiday. It was all intermingled in the most superb time for our party of 12 comprising of sons/wives and grandchildren ranging from 7 to 4 years old.It felt "good" prior to arrival with Stefano providing recommendations on which we acted. Easy to find. Check in was seamless. It was truly home from home ( in his home). A wonderful rustic Tuscan setting with glorious grounds and an incredible panorama from morning till night. The pool was an essential feature when booking and it is first class, just a beautiful setting particularly in late afternoon sun.Housekeeping / laundry was unobtrusive, seamless and very helpful of every request made. Bedrooms were cool and the airflow through the villa was lovely. The kitchen was wonderfully functional with every piece of kit imaginable. The cookery class, pizza party and dinner provided by Alessio Sedran's team of Suzanne and Lorenzo (S) was a true highlight or 3 ! The grandchildren have returned not only with ability to make pasta but also with a passion.Highlightsthe sunrise walking the rear terrace ,coffee in hand ; every morningthe avenue of lavender being gorged on by bees and butterfliesCastellina and Radda -Decori Nel Tempo for exquisite clothing and porcelainSienna Cathedral inc Baptistry and CryptBut mostly that we had the most glorious time in a wonderful setting. There are no lowlights other than I will never go near Budget car rental again.

The Real Tuscany Experience

If you really want to know what it is like to live in Tuscany, this is the villa for you. The descriptions on the listing are accurate but do not tell the entire story. You feel completely at home - the Villa is charming and the surrounding vineyards and olive trees complete the beautiful landscape. The lovely town of Castellina is a short distance away and all the villages you might want to visit, including Siena and San Gimignano, are an easy drive. You can completely relax here, so much so that some days we didn't want to leave. Stefano, the owner, and his staff were easy to work with, always available and completely responsive to whatever we needed (Including giving us fresh eggs one day when we ran out). There is a housekeeper and maintenance worker that live on the property but we never saw them unless we called them for something. The Villa has been in Stefano's family for 4 generations and if you get the chance, definitely plan to visit with him. He is a really interesting guy and more than willing to share the history of the property and show you the hidden areas you might overlook - the lovely chapel on the property, the underground wine cellar and the secret room in the basement. We have stayed at luxury resorts in Tuscany before but now we feel like we've seen the real Tuscany.

A magical experience

We stayed at Sommavilla for a week in October 2022, accompanied by our two post-college age children and four of their friends. It was an absolutely magical experience. The location is unimaginably beautiful; as far as the eye can see, there is nothing but olive groves, vineyards and forested hills. The 16th century house is set in lushly landscaped grounds, with a beautiful pool, stone paths leading to smaller gardens, and intimate seating areas for coffee or a meal. The home also has two patios, so you can basically be outdoors all of the time. Inside, the house is authentic to its period, with tiled stone floors, carved wood chests and other antique furniture, large fireplaces in most rooms (though decorative only, as municipals laws restrict use to wintertime), and a huge, fascinating display of Chianti wines. The kitchen is fully equipped, though the appliances are not modern. There are enough bedrooms for many guests, each with a different color and character. Everyone in our group loved their rooms. Sommavilla excels in authenticity and charm; conversely, travelers should not expect the modern furnishings or amenities of a luxury hotel. The home’s location is a huge plus: it is just a couple of miles to the enchanting town of Castellina in Chianti, which has many excellent restaurants, bakeries, and a Coop grocery store. We regularly did early-morning cappuccino and pastry runs, and after long days of adventure, we lingered over sumptuous meals at the local restaurants. Sommavilla’s location provides an excellent base for exploring Chianti, Siena, San Gimignano and other adjacent areas in Tuscany. We also biked on 5 days through spectacular countryside and picture-perfect Tuscan towns, using local shops that provide e-bikes (it’s very hilly, so think twice before renting a regular bike!), fabulous downloadable routes and, if desired, guides. There is a reason this part of Tuscany is such a popular destination. Stefano is a most warm and gracious host. We really enjoyed our conversations with him, he was always responsive to questions, and he gave great restaurant advice. Luckily he was available one night to join us for dinner in Castellina, as he is a most engaging dinner partner. We would go back to stay at Sommavilla in a heartbeat for all the above reasons.

A villa in Tuscany

We secured this reservation almost 3 years ago, but, because of COVID, postponed it twice until we decided we were coming this year come hell or high water. Stefano was very gracious in allowing us to defer until we felt safe traveling. I can’t imagine a more perfect location. Castellina in Chianti is a very nice little village with lots of great spots to eat, drink, stroll and people watch without all the crowds of the more well known towns. It was also centrally located so that we could drive to Siena, Greve, San Giminagno, even Florence if we chose. We had a rental car, which I recommend, but you have to enjoy driving hilly roads with lots of switchbacks. I found it exhilarating, but it’s not for the faint of heart. There is a beautiful pool with breathtaking views. As beautiful as the villa is, it does show its age a little, which is the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars across the board. It’s not the Ritz, but if you’re okay with shabby chic, it’s very nice. The furniture is a little worn and tired, but comfortable. This was written by a guy. The women in our group would not have been so kind. We left with fantastic memories. I hope this helps.

Wonderful atmosphere and views!

A beautiful house with so much character with amazing views! We loved sitting on the veranda, it was a beautiful atmosphere and as long as the weather was good, we had our meals there. It was plenty of space for 9 of us. The town is only a few minute drive and has restaurants, shops, gelato, and a grocery store. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. We hired the recommended chef for a dinner and it was wonderful! If you plan to leave the house, rental cars or a daily car service is a must. It's worth driving around exploring all the towns in the area. The driveway is steep and a little intimidating, but our cars handled it fine, even in rainy weather. It was a lovely stay and would recommend it to everyone!

Family Fandango!

Our family of 13 (7 adults and 6 children, ages 5-15) spent a week at this beautiful Villa and we all loved it! It was the perfect place for a week of relaxation with a few planned activities after days in Rome and Venice. Stefano was very responsive and Josefa and her husband took care of all our needs in a very timely manner. We are all cooks and as my daughter said, the kitchen was a cook's dream! It was so well appointed that we cooked in most nights. The children even prepared dinner one evening! I can't say enough about the villa with all its amenities, the billiard room, the pool and all the common areas indoors and outside. The grounds were lovely as well! Also, we have stayed in quite a few Vrbo's and I have never seen a guest information book that was so comprehensive! It was a vacation we will never forget! Thank you!!

Tuscany at it best

We took our kids and grandkids, 10 in all, to spend a week in Italy, planning to spend the entire time in Tuscany. This was a fantastic place for us. The home, an ancient villa beautifully maintained and very rustic, worked perfectly for us. We were able to venture out easily from there, but also to stay home and enjoy an amazing, huge pool on the hot days as Europe was in the grip of a heat wave during our stay. The town of Castellina in Chianti was only minutes away and had some good restaurants. Stefano was only a text away if we had any questions and the caretaker Josefina was wonderful to us. We had her prepare a Tuscan meal for us on our first night that was excellent, and we had leftovers to snack on for the rest of the week. Sommavilla met and exceeded all of our expectations.

Enchanting property!

We loved our stay at Sommavilla. The villa is full of interesting rooms and antiques but has modern conveniences. We spent almost every evening on the terrace overlooking the rolling hills. Josefa, the caretaker, made three wonderful meals for us. She set the table beautifully and made us feel very pampered. The grounds of the villa are gorgeous with stone walls and walkways, fruit trees and flowering shrubs. The pool is large with plenty of seating and beach towels. The villa is just a few minutes from Castellina, which is a charming village with plenty of restaurants and shopping. It was just how we imagined an Italian village to be with people sitting in the town square or visiting in front of the shops. People were friendly and helpful. The location of the villa is perfect for day trips to Florence, Siena, and many villages in the area. It was truly a trip of a lifetime for us. Thank you, Stefano, for sharing your beautiful property and letting me feed the chickens!😊

Fantastic! Must stay!

The villa is lovely, our picture perfect Tuscan experience. The location is great, especially if you're looking to stop by some wineries. The villa was well stocked with kitchen basics, soap and toilet paper. Beautiful grounds for a stroll. Staff and Stefano were incredibly easy to communicate with, very friendly and helpful. Bonus points for the sweet puppies that let us pet them through the fence :) Would recommend to everyone!

Beautiful villa and gardens

This villa is beautiful and grand. There is plenty of indoor space for a large family for a vacation - you wouldn't need to worry about being cramped at all. It's very rustic and feels authentic with the decor. The gardens/pool/entire out door property is definitely the best thing about the space - so wonderful. It's really an ideal place to be with a family for a vacation and the nearby town is very cute to visit for dinner or supplies. The villa caretaker Josepha is very nice and helpful and made sure the place was cleaned for us. My only critique of the villa is that it was lacking in basic supplies for a hotel/bnb/rental space. There were only 6 of us staying which is under the capacity and had to buy additional toilet paper as each washroom only had 2 rolls for an entire weeks stay, to add, non of the washrooms had any of the basics like shampoo, or body soap. Even the sink soap dispensers had watered down soap in them. While the kitchen is stocked with cutlery, plates etc, it's lacking some of the other basics like teabags, oil and dishsoap. These are just the basics you expect for any accommodation and for something this pricey, it was disappointing those things weren't provided. It would be the perfect experience if these things and the small extra touches were provided for guests.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. It is great to read that you and your party really enjoyed the outdoor area as well as the amenities of the property! I am also glad that Josefa provided a great experience and was helpful throughout your stay. In regards to some of the missing items inside the villa that would have enhanced your experience, I do provide toilet paper and liquid hand soap (organic quality) in the bathrooms as well as a stock of soap for the dishwasher and the washer, for all of my guests. However, regardless of the amount of people staying, it is always possible to run out of those during a week-long stay, in which case most guests usually just request for a refill (if Josefa has not already taken care of it, which is usually the case). Please always kindly remember that this is a villa with a caretaker, not a hotel. Lastly, the kitchen always comes with a welcome stock of pantry items such as olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper, spices, coffee and sugar. Thank you for your feedback, I hope to welcome you to the property again in the near future!

The best!!!

I stayed at Sommavilla with my husband and 3 other couples in July. I cannot say enough amazing things about this villa. The home and property were both so beautiful, and the pool was incredible! The house is amazing and has absolutely everything you could need. There is a large terrace with beautiful views of the tuscan hills - we spent most nights and many meals out on this terrace. The pool is so spectacular that we never wanted to leave the property. Stefano was amazing to deal with - always so responsive with our questions and gave amazing recommendations for Tuscany. Josefa, who takes care of the property with her husband, cooked us two amazing meals. We hired Alessio Sedran, a private chef recommended by Stefano - the meal was amazing and he was a pleasure to deal with. Overall, the 5 days we spent here were some of the best days of our entire trip to Italy. This property is so special and I cannot wait to come back!

Beautiful villa in a great location

We had a great family vacation in Sommavilla. The layout is perfect for a family, with space between the bedrooms for privacy. The bathrooms are functional, but do not expect luxury. The panels of the shower stall are falling off and the liquid soap is nonexistent. The best part is the pool and the nice terrace..So much for the positive.. Prepare yourself to brew the coffee for an hour, the coffeemaker is old and plugged..Have to buy your own toilet paper, garbage bags, soap etc.. There is only one key to the villa, which is very inconvenient with 12 people living in it. You have to have the key with you at all times, since the door slams closed by wind or just by mistake and you are locked out ( it happened to us upon arrival, since nobody explained the way the door works). We stayed for 2 hours outside with nobody to help us. The caregiver was not home and would not answer her cellphone. Also, DO NOT BOOK THE PRIVATE CHEF! We had paid a deposit and ordered the menu, but the "renowned chef" Alessio Sedran DID NOT SHOW UP without any notification. He simply sent 2 girls with some products that they cooked for2-3 hours in the kitchen. Our celebration dinner was scheduled for 7.30, but happened at 9.30..Thank god for the nice wine we had bought beforehand..The price was very high and although he did not show up, there was no compensation offered..Very bitter taste in our mouths..

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I’m glad that you found the villa to be perfectly suited for a family and that it provided the necessary privacy for your group. It is also great to hear that you truly enjoyed the pool and the terrace! In regards to some of the things that you found inconvenient in the house; the shower stalls have been used improperly, so the gardener fixed the glass panels for you (since someone from your group pushed them instead of slide them laterally). A stock of liquid hand soap, toilet paper, and garbage bags are always provided for each group of tenants, but as you can imagine, with a large group staying in the home it is possible to run out of such items, in which case usually all of our guests just ask for a refill to easily solve any issue. I’ve purchased 3 types of coffee machines for the villa (Nespresso, Moka, American style drip), so that I can accommodate everyone’s wish for the type of coffee that they prefer. If one machine was not producing the coffee at the time that you had hoped, there are 2 other options of coffee machines available to use as an alternative. To our knowledge, and we have recently checked again, after your stay, all 3 coffee machines are in perfect working conditions. I guess you referred to the Italian Moka, that might have been filled with the wrong type of ground coffee. It is unfortunate that you experienced being locked out of the villa, but at the time of the check-in you have have not asked to receive extra keys, so it really was not our fault. In regards to your experience with our recommended private chef, Alessio Sedran, this is the first time that we’ve received any kind of negative feedback about him and his team’s services. All of my guests have always thoroughly enjoyed his catered dinners, cooking classes, and pizza parties. He works with a team of excellent cooks to support his business, and since your request was for a special dinner (versus a personal cooking class), naturally his team helped to execute the special dinner that consisted of his personal menu, and that he had prepared. I do appreciate the feedback, and I hope to be able to welcome you back to the property in the future so that you can have a wonderful experience, as many other guests have had.

Spectacular experience!

Sommavilla was a trip of a lifetime for me and my family of 13. Stefano was an excellent host and met all our needs. The property is superb and Josepha who oversees it is a gem. The pool and exterior areas are impeccably maintained and the home well-stocked for all eventualities. We hired chefs for a few meals with pasta making lessons secured through the owner. Francesca and Guilia were amazing and helped us make life-long memories in the kitchen and dining areas. Josepha made us a fabulous meal as well one night. We had 9 adults, 2 children (4 & 6 years) and 2 babies. Everyone was well-situated in the rooms and baths. The town of Castellina is quaint and so close (7 min by car 40-45 min walk if you don’t take a shortcut that was unavailable) and was among our favourites in Tuscany. If you are lucky to have the weather we did the pool area is fabulous family time under the Tuscan sun. Driving in the area was straightforward to visit other towns and parking reasonable but required advanced planning to avoid the ZTL restricted areas. Lots of details provided by Stefano significantly enhance the stay! Read them carefully! All in all a wonderful place to stay!

An amazing centuries old property - full of character and charming location

We had a great stay this summer, day trips to Siena, Florence and other towns along with lazy afternoons by the pool. Beautiful villa to share with friends and family

We just enjoyed a week of tranquility at Sommavilla. The best part of the home is the expansive deck overlooking the olive trees and vineyards. Each morning, we would enjoy an espresso and watch the deer. Each night, we would sit with our glass of wine and enjoy the stars. The pool is wonderful and refreshing. Plenty of lounge chairs and towels. All of the bedrooms have terrific air conditioning. Josefa, the housekeeper, made us a lovely Tuscan dinner on our first night. She also went grocery shopping for us and stocked the kitchen with everything we would need for the week. The location is great for exploring the Chianti area. Castellina in Chianti is a charming town (only 5 minutes away) with so much character and delicious restaurants. We enjoyed everything about Sommavilla. Stefano, the owner, provides you with a list of recommendations and important information about the villa and also about surrounding areas. We used it quite a bit and were always pleased with his recommendations. Stefano also recommended a private chef to come to the villa, Alessio Sedran. We had an amazing dinner from Alessio one evening as well. Stefano, thank you again for sharing your family's home with us. We are so grateful that we got to enjoy it and look forward to coming back again.

Incredible property! Special, beautiful and much loved villa

Our stay at Sommavilla was incredible. It exceeded our expectations. Stefano was an amazing host and ensured our every need was met with access to amazing tour guides, drivers and chefs. The house was magical. Our group of 12 fell in love. Our 4 children loved the pool and hidden bedroom. The view all over the property from every room was magical. We had dinner on the terrace, by the pool using the charcoal BBQ, we had drinks in the billiards room and sunned ourselves on deck chairs. Nothing was overlooked and we felt so at home. Stefano you made our trip to Tuscany. We will be back to stay at your beautiful home again. Thank you.

We could not have picked a better place to spend time with family in Tuscany. Beautifully maintained villa and grounds provided everything we were looking for and more.
