About this property
Millgate Cottage in the heart of Richmond
The Millgate Cottage is a very unique and quirky 17th-century cottage with a modern contemporary feel. It is located in the heart of the historical and beautiful Georgian market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire and is at the doorstep of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales National Park.
This cozy, historic cottage has many unique characteristics typical of the period, such as wooden beam ceilings, solid flagstone ground floor, and, yes, very steep stairs - the bathroom is on the top floor conveniently next to the bedroom. The property feels spacious with rooms on three different floors, which are furnished in a way to make your stay comfortable and relaxing.
Just a short walk down Millgate road, literally at the corner, is the impressive 11th-century Richmond Castle, whose 950th anniversary is celebrated last year. There is a stunning view of the Richmond waterfalls from the castle and the River Swale, which is also just 5 minutes from the cottage. From the waterfalls, you can turn left and you can take a lovely stroll along the river to the ruins of Easby Abbey, which was founded in 1152 and was a subject of the British artist JMW Turner. Turning right, you will soon reach the National Trusts Hudswell Woods. Another treat on this path is an award-winning pub, the George and Dragon with one of the most beautiful beer gardens in the country.
For a more cultured evening, you could take in a show at the Georgian Theatre Royal, or check what is on at The Station, a community enterprise with live concerts, an art gallery, an artisan café, a local brewery, and a cinema.
There are also several pubs, groceries, independent shops, and cafes to choose from, in and around the market square. There is also a lively local food market here every Saturday.
Please note, as this is a 1700-century cottage the stairs are steep. Therefore, the cottage may not be suitable for those with any mobility issues.

About the host
Hosted by Neil A White
We're really looking forward to welcoming you to Millgate Cottage. It's a lovely cosy place with a contemporary feel and in keeping with the charms of a period cottage.
I was born in the North of England and feel a strong connection to this part of the world, especially North Yorkshire. For me, this part of the UK has many hidden natural gems, many of which can be found in the Yorkshire Dales.
I am a lover of the outdoors and well-traveled. I work as a photographer and lecturer, my photographic artwork focuses on the complexities of the natural world. I also have many other interests such as the arts, exploring different cultures, self-development, and meeting all sorts of people.

Why they chose this property
We really love our cottage, this is because of its uniqueness, location, and its lovely homely and warm atmosphere. To be honest we never want to leave.
What makes this property unique
It’s perfect for a quiet getaway to recharge the batteries and for leisurely strolling along the cobbled streets of the old town. At the doorstep of the town is the stunning landscape of Swaledale, the most northerly of the dales and has the wildest, most unspoilt scenery in the National Park. Here you will also find picturesque villages such as Reeth, Gunnerside, or Muker. If you are an outdoor activities lover this is a paradise for hillwalking, trekking, or bike hiring to name a few.
