About this property

Dog friendly holiday home for 4 people, breath taking scenery, WiFi & only a short walk to the pub.

4 Swallowholm Cottages is situated in the Yorkshire Dales National Park in a small hamlet within Arkengarthdale surrounded by magnificent scenery, numerous fell walks, and bike rides straight from the door, plus, only two thirds of a mile to the tremendously popular CB Inn.

This fascinating cottage was originally a miner’s cottage and now a fabulous Grade II listed holiday home, suitable for both couples, families and friends holidaying together. The cottage has recently been tastefully decorated with high quality furnishings throughout to provide very comfortable accommodation for up to 4 people.

Enter the property into an entrance hall which offers a spacious area for muddy boots and wet coats. The cottage offers unusual upside-down accommodation to maximise the views from the open plan living room and kitchen area upstairs. The living room has high quality furnishings and seating which surrounds the multi-fuel stove and overlooks the fields and fells opposite the cottage, where wildlife including a variety of birds, rabbits and the occasional deer can be spotted. The kitchen offers plenty of storage and workspace with a dining table for up to 6 people.

Downstairs there are two well-presented bedrooms, one double bedroom and one twin bedroom. The family bathroom is downstairs with 3-piece bathroom suite with shower over bath. Outside the cottage there is a handy bench to start the day with a morning coffee or to relax with a glass of wine after a day in the fells.

The cottage is heated throughout by modern and powerful electric radiators. There is free unlimited WIFi available within the cottage and a digital TV with Sky for cosy nights in.

Locally there is, as mentioned, the CB Inn which serves fantastic food and has an extensive list of well-kept ales and fine wines. In the heart of Langthwaite, about 1.5 miles from the cottage is The Red Lion, a small quirky pub, with a fantastic landlady who is a fountain of knowledge for the area. In the opposite direction, about a 20-minute drive away, there is the famous Tan Hill Inn, the highest pub in England. The cottage is only a short, scenic, 4-mile drive into the popular village of Reeth with character buildings, proper Yorkshire pubs serving great food, the Burgoyne Hotel with restaurant and bar, cafes, ice cream parlour, gift shops, art centre, museum and post office for essentials.

The cottage is situated perfectly for exploring both the northern dales and a little further afield you can easily access Barnard Castle, County Durham and the North Eastern Lake District which is approximately an hour away. Also worth a visit is the Georgian Market town of Richmond with a fantastic castle, abbey, and Georgian theatre. The bustling market towns, Leyburn and Hawes both hold weekly markets and have numerous eateries and have essential amenities such as supermarkets and petrol stations.

4 Swallowholm is one of our dog friendly cottages, we accept 2 well-behaved dogs. The Dales are very dog friendly and most pubs in the area will accept dogs in the bar sections as do many of the cafes.

Please note that the cottage is approached by a farm track about 100 metres from the main road. There is designated parking for all 6 cottages in the terrace. 4 Swallowholm has 1 designated space for 1 vehicle. You are welcome to pull outside the cottage to unload and load your vehicle, before parking in the designated space.

Location beautiful, cottage lovely (but COLD), amenities good and pub very close!
Really enjoyed our visit to the cottage. The location is absolutely stunning; the upside-down nature of the property really aided the outlook. NB any arrival information due to lack of mobile coverage! On entry to the cottage our first impressions a FREEZING COLD cottage, NO heating or water put on. It took about 6 hours to warm the place, not helped by the lack of wood (2 logs) kindling (nil) to get the small fire going. Not a good start really! The cottage has all the facilities & home comforts for a small family and we certainly had more than enough equipment to keep us fed, watered, entertained and comfortable. There was an iron&board mentioned but no board and the iron was pretty dirty! So we didn't use it. Hannah, brought up a board on the Wed. I would suggest the owner provides a welcoming pack with key telephone numbers forCB inn, pubs in Reeth/Langthwaite, vets etc. If possible some local tourist leaflets, maps could be of use. Note, Reeth had a very helpful tourist office, good store/PO and several pubs (black bull very good, dog friendly, rooms and good beer/food at reasonable price!) We ate and stayed at the CB inn also very good but slightly more expensive; still worth a visit. We visited Reeth, Leyburn (bigger town), Keld, Thwaite, Tan Hill and Grinton all are sorry the time, very pretty and enjoyable! The views from Fremington Edge, Merrick and Thwaite to Tan Hill are unforgettable. Our thanks to Hannah (holidayhomeyorkshire.co.uk) who had just taken over looking after the property and who baulked us out with the problems we had encountered. Lastly the holiday was marred over the last 2 days as the cottage has an electricity pre-paid meter (topped up by an sd card stick). After a long day out we returned to the property late afternoon to NO electricity, so place was cold, again, no lights and having checked the circuit breakers but knew that there was power arriving as there was a flashing box. Spoke to Hannah, who informed us that she (her dad) would top up the stick, bring it from Reeth to cottage and all would be good. So £20 sorted out our for about 15 hours. On the Sunday we had the same problem, so Hannah repeated the process. The owner should ensure that there's enough on the system! We spent the last 24-hours watching the credit disappear and frightened to take a decent shower. NB there were only 2 adults and it wasn't particularly cold!! We were glad to get to the CB and not have to worry about power consumption.
