About this property
Perfect cozy and comfortable getaway two blocks from Oldtown State Street!
Charming and cozy little house in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara built in 1915. The rooms are small (Think Parisian Hotel for a size comparison) but well-appointed and quaint. You'll find a place to hang your hat, charge your phone, rest your fee, set your glass and simply relax.
Great for guests who want to experience a genuine downtown local experience. A few blocks from the Saturday Farmer's Market. Two blocks east of State Street and Joe's Cafe (highly recommended), French Press Coffee, theaters, shopping... The back yard is the sanctuary and my favorite place to take afternoon naps under the wisteria.
Because the house is in the middle of downtown, it is not as quiet as a country mouse. If you want 100% quiet, you will not want to stay here. That being said, I haven't lived in this neighborhood for many years and I have rarely been bothered by the traffic. But the house IS located on a city street and there ARE cars on this street.
The parking spot in my driveway is very small. Guests have fit a Land Rover in and I fit my Tahoe in (very snugly). If you are uncomfortable backing into a tight parking space, you can park overnight on the street. There is a City lot two blocks away for longer, overnight parking for a small fee.
The house is not air-conditioned. There are a few days out of the year when one might want air-conditioning, but I provide fans for the rooms and the dutch door in the front and french door in the back, as well as a few windows provide cross-ventilation on those few hot days. If you need air-conditioning, you may not want to stay here.
My travels around the world have taken me to some incredible hotels and I owned and operated a yacht charter business for 12 years (as Chef, Steward, First Mate and Cruise Director), taking guests to the from the Channel Islands in five star luxury so attention to comfort is of upmost importance to me. The house is equipped with a full kitchen, quality linens, towels, comfortable rugs and furnishings, and if you've forgotten your toothbrush, razor, sunscreen, hair dryer, or shaving cream, you don't have to walk the (one block) down the street to the store.
There are bicycles (and helmuts/locks) for your use, a BBQ for backyard entertaining, a Bose portable music system that connects to your music library so you can have your music in any room, a game table for an impromptu chess, backgammon, or card game, and a new TV with Netflix and Wi Fi.
A few times per year, my neighbor has a party in his backyard. I never know when it's going to happen. Although they have generally been good about abiding by the noise curfew of 10 pm, I cannot guarantee that there would be some noise coming from the backyard at some point throughout the year. If that happens, a call to me and me stopping by to speak to them generally brings the noise level down! They are very respectful. They just like to have fun sometimes.

The host requires you to complete the following before checking out:
Load and start the dishwasher
Remove personal items and take out the rubbish
Turn off the lights and lock the doors
Failure to complete these may result in a negative review from the host.
Please clean up after your pet to avoid additional cleaning charges. My cleaning crew charges me more to clean dirt, fur and other pet-related messes.
Please keep noise levels down due to next door neighbors. City ordinance is very strict about the 10 pm noise cut off.
Please keep bicycles locked and covered in the backyard and gate closed and latched.

Great little place for three friends to hang out and rest their heads while exploring the city. Would definitely come back. Dawn was an extremely accommodating and helpful host. Everything was labeled in the house which was extremely helpful!
Exactly what it promises: charming, cozy, and perfectly located in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. Our one-night stay checked every box - walkable to everything on State Street, a magical backyard perfect for unwinding, and genuinely dog-friendly (our pups loved it). The character of the home adds warmth you won’t find in a hotel and Dawn is fantastic in her outreach. My husband and I highly recommend for anyone who wants a real local experience!
This cottage felt perfect for one or two couples exploring Santa Barbara! It was cute with indoor and outdoor sitting areas, and there were thoughtful instructions on how to make the best use of the home and how to enjoy the city. We were able to easily walk to the Farmers' Market, the courthouse, the Funk Zone, the State Street Promenade, and the beach. The bikes made exploring more distant areas easy too. This is exactly the type of place my wife and I love to find when traveling, and it exceeded expectations.

Thanks for your thoughtful review, Kevin. The house IS small, but I love it and I really like it when others do, as well!
This house was definitely in the top five (perhaps even three) of all the places I have stayed. It was perfect for our brief get away. Well stocked kitchen for making dinner, very comfortable beds with plenty of privacy and the outdoor seating around the fire pit was a great way to spend the evening. I would definitely stay here again the next time I find myself in Santa Barbara.
Dawn was incredible. She reached out to us beforehand to make sure we got in safely and communicated with us the entire time. The property was in the heart of Santa Monica, within walking distance to many of the activities we were planning. Excellent property and host.

Loved hosting you Dennis! For anyone reading along, the home is located in Santa Barbara, not Santa Monica-just a little coastal clarification!
this property was exactly as described and photos are accurate! Dawn was extremely helpful and answered questions promptly! It was a great place to stay! We enjoyed the backyard space to eat breakfast and wind down in the evening! Would stay here again!
Excellent, cozy little home. It was perfect for our family of four for a couple nights. The backyard is a wonderful little retreat and the bedrooms, living room and kitchen are all nicely appointed. The noise from the street was a bit of an issue (we were there in a Saturday night so lots of people out partying) but nothing too disturbing. Would recommend bringing some extension cords as outlets are mostly in subfloor and difficult to access for most things.
Absolutely loved our stay! The house was cozy and perfectly located — close to everything yet quiet and relaxing. The host was incredibly kind and helpful. We’d come back anytime!
The place is beautiful and charming. Very clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the outdoor living space. Convenient walking distance to restaurants, shops and the beach.

I am an Architect and own and operate my small firm on the same block as the Petite Maison. I have lived on my boat, Aurora, a classic wooden Grand Banks Pilothouse Trawler, in the Santa Barbara Harbor for 18 years. I am lucky enough to be able to walk to my office with my big white dog, Brigitte, who is lucky enough to lay in the bay window all day watching the world go by while I carry on, working tirelessly to support her passion for marrow bones. In my next life I want to be Brigitte. Don't get me wrong, I love my job. Sometimes, though, sitting in a bay window eating marrow bones sounds really cool. When I'm not working, you might find me behind my keyboard playing in a local bar with my all girl rock band, Midnight Mynx.
Why they chose this property
I fell in love with this little house in 2007 and had wanted to own a house in Santa Barbara since I moved here in 1989. I had been looking for a property centrally-located and one that I could also use as my architectural office. I ended up liking this particular block of downtown so much I purchased another house up the block and converted it to my office. The house is perfect as a hotel use, being in the heart of downtown.
What makes this property unique
I have traveled all over the world collecting books and unique and interesting artifacts but it is Africa that has stolen my heart and because the house is Victorian, I've chosen to bring in the African Colonial influence into the decor so that I am reminded of my safari bush trips every day. An African Safari is probably the most remote vacation you could imagine and because I wanted guests to have a true "get away" experience, you'll see this influence in all of the rooms including Masai Shukas scattered about. Everything in the house has a story and a special meaning to me so if you're up for some good stories, I can tell you some!
