Play Outside/Relax Inside at Our Modern Retreat, Ursa Major
Welcome to the best-kept secret in the the Bay Area! Bear Valley has all the natural beauty and great skiing as Tahoe -- but without the painful traffic, crowds, and prices! It's only 3-ish hours due east from the Bay Area, on scenic, well-maintained (and plowed) Hwy 4.
**MUST-READ FOR WINTER ACCESS** When the snow starts piling up in Bear Valley, THE VILLAGE ROADS ARE CLOSED to cars, and instead groomed for skiing and snowmobiling. It makes getting to our house a bit of an adventure! Feel free to discuss with us before booking, if this is a concern. We are close to parking -- a 10-minute walk -- and have a cargo sled you can use to transport your stuff. Not quite that athletic? Then hire the local "snowmobile taxi" guy to transport you in and out for a flat price. BONUS: Intermediate/advanced skiiers/snowboarders can ski home down the back side of the mountain right up to our front door, via the Lunch Run or Home Run.
PETS: Up to two well-behaved dogs allowed for no additional fee.
FEES NIGHTLY RATE / ADDITIONAL GUESTS: The house can comfortably accommodate 6 adults in the three small bedrooms plus 2 kids/teens in the twin-over-twin bunk bed in the loft. There is also a fold-down couch for 1-2 people. Our nightly rate is therefore based on six guests, with additional people $25/night (VRBO calculates this for you). We do this to keep the house (semi) affordable for single families, rather than pricing it higher by default so that it attracts only only multi-families or large groups, who tend to incur much more wear and tear on the house. However, there is also a fold-out couch on the mezzanine in case you really need to bring a few more people, or just want to spread out. (NOTE: both of the full bathrooms are on the second floor; the third-floor bedroom and bunk bed are reached by a spiral staircase.)
HOUSEKEEPING: Our amazing cleaners charge us a flat fee of $225 winter or summer, which we ask you to pay. (Think about it: they have to take the laundry in and out on a snowmobile!)
ALPINE COUNTY TAX: We must collect a 14% Transient Occupancy Tax for Alpine County.
ABOUT THE HOUSE Our house is very well set up for two families with children of any age. There's a pac n'play (with sheets), a booster seat with tray, and a selection of kids' books. We have an a smart TV with an AppleTV box running with all the various streaming services plus some games. Quality linens are provided, as are all basic necessities, lots of board games (and some snow and pool gear), and DVDs. There is also a smart TV in one bedroom if you want to close the kids in there to watch something.
We named the house for the big bear medallion on the front and because the night sky here is so clear you can see this constellation clearly. Ursa Major is only 1,600 square feet, but we think it feels bigger, thanks to an intelligent open plan spread over three levels. Our house was designed by architects Ehrlich, Heft & Rominger; Jack Rominger built his own design award–winning house here in Bear Valley and designed several other houses here as well. His subsequent firm Ehrlich Rominger became well-known for innovative buildings in Silicon Valley for Varian, Fairchild Semiconductor, etc.
In summer, Bear Valley ranges from 50 degrees at night to a comfortable, never-too-hot 85 or so midday. In winter, temperatures can drop to the teens. The woodstove in the living room easily heats the whole house, with the help of the 24-foot, three-story ceiling, but a new mini-split heat pump is available to keep you from getting cold.
SLEEPING There are three small bedrooms total, plus extra beds on the two open mezzanines.
Second floor: • Bedroom #1 has a king bed and room (barely) for a Pac-n-Play • Bedroom #2 has a king bed, a TV (with Internet-streaming services), and no room except maybe for a dog bed or a pac 'n 'play — this room can be closed off with its own bathroom for an en suite. • Open mezzanine with full-size foldout couch and wooden privacy screen
3rd floor (up spiral staircase, no bathroom): • Bedroom #3 has a full bed and no room for anything else • Open mezzanine with bunk beds (twin over twin). There are two mattresses on the top bunk bed, if you prefer to take one off and have an extra kid sleep on the floor.
NOTE: Bear Valley has no grocery store and only 2 restaurants, so we end up cooking a lot when we're there -- the kitchen is small but fully equipped and functional. Dining room seats 10.
WHAT TO DO IN SUMMER: Our house is a 10-minute walk from either the Bear Valley Lodge (with a pool available to guests for a small fee) or beautiful, private Bear Lake, with its sandy beach, swimming platform, and rope swing. Alpine Lake is a 15-minute drive. Our back yard is full of trees — we have a hammock you can lounge on amongst them in summer — and ends in a granite escarpment that kids love playing on in summer and sledding down in winter. There's mountain biking, hiking, fishing and rock climbing all around.
AMENITIES • Books (kids and adult fiction) • Booster seat with removable tray • Coffee maker, bean grinder • Dishwasher • Games (both board and AppleTV video games) • very basic kayak and SUP available for use at Bear Lake • Linens & towels, including beach towels • Microwave • Pac n’ play (with mattress pad and sheets) • Pots & pans • Shampoo, soap, toiletries if you forget yours • Sleds for borrowing • Sony Bluetooth speaker stereo • TV (no cable, Internet streaming services only plus lots of DVDs) • Washer/dryer • Wifi • Wood stove & firewood
We come up to Bear Valley at least once a month, so some of our personal items are stored there. You're welcome to use our extra ski helmets, life vests, beach chairs, and more.

Thank you, Theresa! You and Jim are the most amazing guests - chopping kindling, shoveling a path, fixing the fireplace handle - I feel like we should be paying you to stay with us! Still want to have that dinner together in the summer sometime!
Well loved cabin and it shows! Bonnie is an incredible host and she really cares that her guests enjoy their stay. Nice quiet street and the big windows in the living room are amazing. We skied everyday and worked on puzzles in the late afternoons. It's really a perfect place to stay.
The house is great and Bonnie is an amazing host! There was a very well stocked kitchen, comfortable spaces, clean and well organized. What a great experience. We will definitely be back!
A very comfortable home. The kitchen was well stocked and the large dining room table created a wonderful gathering place. The communication with the owners was excellent.A place we would look forward to staying at again.
Ursa Major is a comfortable, cozy, lovely cabin in a beautiful setting. The owners provide a well stocked and well organized home away from home. Host was incredibly helpful and responsive for any questions. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and plan to return.

Thank you, Joan! It was a pleasure to have you. Hope to host you again.
It was a great place to stay. Cozy, clean and well prepared for winter stay. The landlord was very helpful!! The location was perfect for all winter activities my family enjoyed. I will definitely visit this place again.
Really enjoyed our stay…. Bear Valley is a bit quirky so we didn’t know what to expect about not being able to drive to the cabin, but it actually was quite pleasant of a walk to and from the village. The bed situation was perfect for our 2 families of four (4 adults, 4 kids). Kitchen had a lot of what we needed and the living area was cozy. Would stay again!

Thank you Phuong! Sorry you got to experience the very rare Hwy 4 closure (the first in our 2.5 years of owning this house) AND the power outage! Thanks for staying calm and for leaving the house in such good shape.
Wonderful, wonderful home! Bonnie was the perfect host and great communication about the stay. Tons of room, well stocked with anything you could need, and very relaxing. If you can’t tell from pics, the spiral staircase is between the second and third floors. There is a wide comfortable staircase between first and second floors that is better for elderly or anyone not wanting to navigate the spiral. House is about a 10 min walk to the lake. We look forward to staying there again!
We loved our stay. The house is well kept, the wood stove was delightful, and Bonnie was responsive answering any questions that popped up. No car access is part of the adventure, and it was fun skiing down to the parking lot every morning. Great fit for families.

Thank you so much, David! We appreciate the very kind words. So glad you had a good time!
The place is so spacious and comfortable, has a well-supplied kitchen, and plenty of indoor entertainment to rest up from the incredible mountain adventures that are readily accessible around Bear Valley!
Ursa Major was perfect for our hiking/kayaking vacation. The house is beautiful and has everything we needed. We loved the trees all around the house. And the hiking recommendations in the notebook were very helpful. We look forward to returning with our family on our next trip.
We enjoyed our stay in Ursa Major.
Bonnie, the owner, was very helpful. The house had everything we needed and beyond. My granddaughters did not want to leave.

About the host
Hosted by Bonnie Powell
Bonnie (writer), Bart (photographer), and Bonnie's mom Linda (retired, dog lover) bought this house together as a place to get away from the Bay Area craziness and let our then 6-year-old run wild outside. We love hiking, hammocking, swimming, rock climbing, and kayaking here in summer, and skiing, sledding, and sitting by the fire in winter!
Why they chose this property
Bonnie went skiing with a friend in Bear Valley for the first time in January 2016 and appreciated how uncrowded and low-key the slopes were. We came back in summer all together and just fell in love with the peacefulness and all the outdoor activities. We bought this house somewhat on a whim before the big Winter of 2016/17 -- but haven't regretted it for a moment!
What makes this property unique
It's blissfully quiet and serenely beautiful. Every time we come up here, we discover something new.
