Summary:

This quaint end-terrace cottage on the Graythwaite Estate near Hawkshead in Cumbria sleeps four people in three bedrooms.

The Space:

Forge is a charming end-terrace cottage set in a central courtyard location on the Graythwaite Estate's extensive grounds, near Hawkshead in Cumbria. With three bedrooms including one double with en-suite and two singles, the cottage can sleep four people. There's also a shower room and an open plan living area with kitchen, dining area and sitting area complete with a cosy open fire. Outside, there is ample off road parking and a private patio garden with furniture. With thoughtful furnishings and wonderful shared on-site facilities and grounds, including a swimming pool, trout fishing lake and children's play area, plus with the whole of the Lakes at your doorstep, Forge provides a pretty place in which to base yourself for a fantastic Cumbrian getaway.

The Neighborhood:

The picturesque village of Hawkshead still retains the charm and character that so endeared it to its most famous residents - William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Cars are banned from the village, leaving visitors free to wander the wealth of tiny alleyways, thoroughfares, archways and courtyards between the whitewashed 17th Century houses. With stunning scenery and numerous attractions within easy touring distance, Hawkshead is in an ideal location at any time of the year.

Disappointing

Not a great start when, immediately after arrival, a tap comes loose and starts pouring hot water over the bathroom floor. Now, things like things happen, we are all used to minor crises happening at home and it is what you do about it that matters. In the case of Graythwaite, what they did was very little! Despite repeated calls to the help lines, we never got a response (answer phone only on both lines and no response to text messages). The original fault was given a temporary fix with the help of a Pizza guy who happened to be on site but when we left a week later the problem was still there... We spent 3 days with no hot water in the bathroom. Then there was the fact that some of the crockery was dirty; plus the fact that some pans had food stuck to the bottom; plus the fact that there was dog muck at the entrance to the BBQ area (still there when we left). The pool was also closed. Not quite sure why, it was after the Govt had allowed pools to reopen, but might have been due to covid-19... Would have been nice if there are had been some sort of explanation or perhaps even an acknowledgement/apology. On the plus: Location is good - reasonably convenient for much of the area and with good walks from the cottage itself. Wifi is good. Cottage was a reasonable size and just about adequately equipped, but you are going to need to wash up after every meal... but there is a dish washer!
