Secluded Lakefront Cottage Near Town Beaches and North Fork Wineries

This cottage is beautifully located on Great Pond on one-half acre in the heart of Long Island's North Fork. The lakefront is secluded from neighboring properties and is superb for swimming, boating and fishing. Swimming in Long Island Sound is just six blocks away at Kenney's Beach. Dine on the deck with a sunset view of the lake and then stargaze with no interfering city street lights. *TWO WEEK MINIMUM*

Cottage has two bedrooms accommodating up to four people, air conditioning and ceiling fans, an all-electric kitchen with microwave and coffee maker, internet access and a TV and DVD player. Pets allowed with prior approval and signed pet agreement.

The property is on a beautiful one half lot with wooded and open areas and a private bulkheaded lakefront. It is ideal for families with young children who like to explore. The house comes completely furnished, with the exception of towels and linens.

Just down the road at the end of the lake is Peconic Dunes Camp, a summer camp operated by Suffolk County. The village of Southold is just a five minute drive away, as well as 30 of the North Fork's finest wineries. Other local visitor attractions include the historic port village of Greenport, Horton's Point Lighthouse, and Goldsmith's Inlet County Park.

BEST DECISION EVER!

My husband and I rented this cottage for most of the summer and couldn't be happier with it. We lovingly refer to this place as The Pond Shack. The house is small and rustic so if you want a luxurious rental, this isn't for you. But if you want a low key retreat at an unbeatable price in an absolutely gorgeous location with beautiful views of the Great Pond (it's really more of a lake) and a 5 minute walk to the beach, then look no further. This place is perfect for 2 couples or a couple with kids. The pond is clean and not scummy - great for swimming or just watching the water. The best thing about this place is that you feel totally in nature. We've seen a ton of Osprey, swallows, a cardinal and of course geese and there's even a swan that lives on the pond too. There are also turtles in the pond, and deer and rabbits all around the neighborhood. There are great walking/running trails just up the street and of course gorgeous Kenney's Beach with uninterrupted sound-front stretches of sand (and rocks too - bring aqua socks if you have them!). We like to walk over and watch the sunset and the water is calm and great for swimming. The owner Larry is great and we've enjoyed meeting him and interacting with him throughout our stay. He's always been very friendly, responsive and helpful. We love the North Fork and couldn't be happier to have found this gem. So sad the summer's almost over but we will definitely be back!

Stay away. Find somewhere else. Dirty, smells

this cottage needs a lot of TLC, which the owner, who resides in CA, doesn't care. No amenites-toilet paper, paper towels, pot holder, dish soap, sponge, etc. Broken curtain rods, curtains not long enough for windows in bedroom. WIFI maybe accessible on the outside deck pointing at house next door where modem is. Owner should get cable for the price he's charging guests. Broken storm door, broken ice trays, broken web chairs on deck. Beds were uncomfortable. Dirty pillows. I bought my own sheets, blankets and pillows. Yard by pond is covered in geese poop. 3 nights too many. One star too many

Turned out well...

The property is beautiful, large yard, beautiful lake however, the house was dated and quite dirty. After a good cleaning my family and I did have a lovely time fishing and exploring the area; we also enjoyed our neighbor and their wonderful daughters. I would not rent the cottage again but I would rent another property from Larry the owner, he responded promptly to my emails and rectified the issues I had as best as he could.

turned out well

The property is quite lovely, the lake breath taking. The inside of the cottage was the issue, It was dated and quite dirty. I must admit that after a trip to kmart for supplies and a good cleaning my family ended up having a OK time. A big plus was the owner Larry who attempted to rectify the issues we had as best as he could. We also had lovely neighbors who made the time at the cottage enjoyable. I would not stay at this property in the future however I would rent another property from Larry the owner.

Lovely weekend

This little cottage is perfectly located. It sits directly on the pond and is walking distance from the lovely Kenney's Beach. The setting is beautiful, I have admired this little house and the location for years and finally rented the weekend of 4th of July. We had a great time. The house is surprising well laid out and our family of four was comfortable and we really enjoyed ourselves. The added bonus to this vacation rental is Larry, the homeowner. I spoke with him a number of times by phone and e-mail. He could not be a nicer man, he was back in touch immediately, very accommodating and extremely easy to do business with-which is not always the case when dealing with homeowners. I would give Larry an excellent review. I look forward to doing business again with him in the future and would rent this cottage at any time.

Good, cheap vacation

I'm from Long Island, born & raised, so I know how ridiculously pricey it can be to rent a house in the summer. True, this house is pretty old & it does have some downfalls (60's decor/out dated furniture/old shower/dirty utensils), but this place has a lot to offer. I would probably rate the house as average, however with the owner's personality & the lake access, it's better than average. If you can get by the downfalls mentioned & manage to bring some paper plates/utensils, then you're going to have a great time. I understand the owner, Larry, lives out of state- so really the only reason utensils could be dirty has to do with the cleanliness of the renters prior to your stay (or the cleaner of the house). THIS house does not have an oven (I made this mistake), however Larry was so nice to give me access to his second house to bake my chicken. Where have you ever met someone trusting and nice enough who would give you the key-code to their other vacation house? Nice guy. He was quick with responses, accommodating, honest, truthful & a huge help with this rental. I'd consider this more a cabin than a cottage, however it is house-like (tv/shower/2 bed rooms/kitchen, etc.). It is secluded & private (however close enough to neighbors next door in case of emergencies). It does sit near his second house, which is also listed for rent, but luckily that house was vacant the weekend we stayed (it does sit a bit close to the cottage/you must share pond access with other house renters). I'm the type of person to enjoy the little things traveling has to offer. This place sits on a big lake type pond (google Great Pond), which has HUGE fish in it (we caught 2 big bass from our shore). We saw a ton of boats fishing all weekend (there is a boat ramp, so bring your boat! It is worth it!). We enjoyed nights out on the deck where we BBQ'ed (bring charcoal), watched TV & fished. We got to see a deer run through our yard one morning. We enjoyed exploring the North Fork; we visited Orient Point/Greenport & the beach which is right around the corner from this house. There are a ton of wineries not far from the house as well. I surprised my boyfriend with this house for the weekend for his 30th birthday & we both loved it. Like I said, there are some downfalls, true, but if you are not high maintenance & are looking for a relaxing weekend of sight seeing/fishing, THIS is the place for you. We are already looking to book our next stay.

Just what I needed

Staying at Larry's private lake-side cottage in Southold was just what I needed. Traveling from New York, I wanted to get back to nature and also go wine-tasting in the North Fork area. The cottage was a perfect place to call home, while doing just that. The private cottage, located on a lake, and a ten minute walk from the beach, was the perfect spot to relax, and had everything that one needs. Communicating with Larry was easy and he gives lots of information about the neighborhood. There were also pamphlets of local points of interest on the table! Overall, a very easy and peaceful weekend!

Nice surrounding, old stuff

The driving describtion was great and easy to go there. The surrounding is really great! 10 min walk to the ocean and the lake very close to the house at the end of the garden. The property was dirty, rusty and moldy. We had to clean up first the dishes before eating. There are a lot of restaurants there and all where nice. We liked Greenport a lot. It's a shame, that this nice spot get not realy fostered!

I have many fond memories of spending Summers growing up with my family on this idyllic property next to Great Pond and just steps away from Long Island Sound beaches.

Why they chose this property

I enjoy the serenity of this neighborhood, coupled with the plants and animal life that surround the property.

What makes this property unique

From the rear deck of the cottage you can see dense woods on the right, a cluster of woods on the left, and straight ahead you get a bird's eye view of Great Pond looking across to the West in the direction of Long Island Sound. You are constantly surrounded by the activiities of birds, waterfowl, squirrels, deer and turkeys, as well as an abundance of different types of trees.
