About this property
Wine Country Farmhouse with Hot Tub
Cozy Wine Country Farmhouse: Hot Tub, Deck, Fireplace & Views
This is a tranquil retreat in a magnificent setting, surrounded by fruit trees, oaks, and a private garden with views of horses in the pastures below. Relax in the hot tub while looking at majestic oaks and the night sky. You will love the way natural light floods the house, and the feeling of being out in nature even when you are inside.
The early 1900s farmhouse is the original house on a large horse ranch and vineyard in Sonoma County. It sits at the intersection of two idyllic country roads and offers a secluded retreat that is both rural, with horse pastures and surrounding vineyards, and within minutes to some of the best wineries and activities in Sonoma and Napa.
The 1300 square foot house is on two levels, with three bedrooms, a full bath and a half bath. It has a fully equipped kitchen, dining room and a living room with a gas insert fireplace.
The one-acre private yard has a lawn, deck with bistro lights, propane grill and lots of outdoor seating options. Relax in the hot tub while looking at horse pastures, a grove of California oaks, and the night sky. The heirloom home orchard features Luther Burbank's best known varietals (including Santa Rosa Plum), and Sonoma's own Gravenstein apples (red and green variety).
The garden attracts many birds, including hummingbirds, and in the evenings, there is a frog symphony from the nearby seasonal pond.
Perfect for couples, friends, and families. The house is convenient if you are attending a wedding in the area. We are in Sonoma County, but just a few miles from the Napa County line. There are numerous fine wineries around us. And you are 5 minutes away from a great grocery store.
**TESLA EV charger adapter: Please let us know if you will need the adapter to charge your electric vehicle and we will be happy to provide it for you.**
*Secluded and comfortable* The 3 bedrooms feature comfortable mattresses and room darkening blinds. The quiet nights, the occasional neighing of horses and the absence of neighbors help ensure a deep sleep. Winter and spring, there is a frog symphony from the pond below the house. Spring and summer, there are lots of birds (including hummingbirds) in the garden. The house has air conditioning, fiber optic internet and a Roku TV connected to cable and Netflix.
*Guest Access* You have access to the whole house, with the exception of a locked utility closet, and to the enclosed, secluded garden. There is plenty of parking outside.
Private Chef Services Available - We can connect you to a wonderful private chef who does personalized menus, food and wine pairings, and olive oil tastings
*Centrally located* 7.5 miles to Santa Rosa, Sonoma County’s seat 9.5 miles to Calistoga along a scenic road 12 miles to Saint Helena, along a beautiful, winding road of vineyards 20 miles to Healdsburg 21 miles to historic Sonoma Plaza along Highway 12
We provide a guidebook with lots of recommendations for local activities.
**Special Events** The equestrian facility, a former Arabian breeding and sales barn, is available for a small number of events a year. Your special event can be held in one of the cedar barns and in the large open courtyard at the center of the equestrian complex. Please see pictures above and contact us for more details.
*Summer Offerings* During the summer months, the adjacent stables offer 10 weeks of horseback riding camps. These popular camps are for kids aged 7-12 and do not require any riding experience. You can bring your kids to the barn where they will spend the day riding and learning about horsemanship. And while they ride, make bran mash cookies for the horses and pick wild blackberries, you can tour wine country. For more information about the camps, please contact us.
Please note: The house is located on a ranch with an active riding stable and vineyards. We welcome you to the farm house but ask that you do not visit the stables or vineyard without permission or prior arrangement. We had a nice 2-day stay at the farmhouse and were able to meet up with a few friends in the area during our stay. The horses from the bedroom window was a beautiful site.
The scenery surrounding Alpine Ranch Farmhouse is simply stunning. The house itself is cozy yet spacious. The fireplace adds to the home’s welcoming ambiance. We only used one of the beds, but it was oh so comfortable. A magical experience!
Well located, cute home adjacent to a working horse farm. It was a great base for our day trips to the redwood forest, rocky pacific coast and the wineries in Sonoma, Napa, etc. We enjoyed our stay!
Everything about this property was amazing. The place was spotless, beds were comfortable, and the setting was conducive to a relaxing week with friends.
I'd definitely recommend it to anyone who plans to travel to Wine Country!
The property is in a great location. Short/easy drives in several directions to the great vineyards/wine tastings in the area. We loved watching the horses next door. We will return when we’re back in this area!
Adorable little ranch. Private and quiet. Shared shower, but an extra half bath in one of the bedrooms. Great communication. Easy to get in and leave. Was perfect for our needs.

Dear Carolynn, Thank you for the lovely review. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay.
This is the best stocked vrbo I've stayed in. Really clean, well-organized kitchen, everything we needed. The beds are excellent, plenty of room to stretch out, and a gorgeous piece of property. All this at a reasonable price.

The farmhouse was a tranquil home away from home. The house was immaculate and Ron was a gracious host, asking if we needed anything. We will definitely be coming back! Central to everything we needed, including wineries.

Dear Carole, Thank you for the lovely review. We are so glad you enjoyed the farmhouse and look forward to your return.
The farmhouse and property exceeded our expectations. We loved the setting and location. The primary bed was super comfortable and the living room had high quality furnishings to provide a comfortable stay. We ate dinner at Salt & Stone in Kenwood one of the nights and absolutely recommend. The location of the farmhouse is really ideal and convenient to so many places. Our host Caroline was wonderful to work with and communication and the guidebook were excellent. Thank you again!
Beautiful setting, immaculate home, fully complete kitchen. Everything was perfect!
Communication with Caroline was clear, crisp and respectful. This is truly a special place to experience the Sonoma, St Helena and Calistoga area.

Easy check in and out, communication with owner and property manager was the best I have ever experienced. Thank you for sharing your sweet place with us.

About the host
Hosted by Caroline Simon
Our parents fell in love with this property in the 1980s. It had been a large Arabian horse breeding facility. They planted a vineyard, with Merlot and Cabernet Franc grapes, and built a chicken coop, full of happy chickens who roamed the vineyard and the compost pile. They loved this land, the creeks running through it, and the charm of the little farmhouse. The ranch became the center of our family reunions for almost thirty years. My brother, sister and I have been able to hold on to this well-loved ranch by sharing this small, sweet slice of Sonoma with you, our guests. We are grateful to you and find joy in sharing the things we love about our beautiful region. First, we renovated the farmhouse--it's still charming, but now has modern comforts like instant hot water, air conditioning, fiber optic internet and an EV charger. We also planted an orchard celebrating Sonoma County’s rich agricultural heritage. It has about 25 heirloom fruit varieties, including some of celebrated botanist Luther Burbank’s best known. And since our parents were from Normandy, we planted quite a few apple trees. We are not making calvados, yet, but we love knowing that our guests can walk from the house to the garden and pick a lovely ripe fruit in the middle of summer.
Why they chose this property
Our parents fell in love with California when they first came to Calistoga in the 1960s. It was a dream come true when our father retired and they bought this ranch. Sonoma County reminded them of France, their native country: the vineyards, the beautiful agricultural lands, the farm-fresh foods. And the weather was always better than Normandy!
They planted a vineyard, with acres of Merlot and a few other varietals, and our mother tended to the vines and her Chicken Château. Our sister manages the horse stables on the property. It is known as a place where kids and adults enjoy riding. In the summer, the school offers horse camps for kids during which riders of all levels ride, learn to care for horses, make friends and relax by the creek. Some of her students now send their kids to the camp.
What makes this property unique
The house is on preserved agricultural land. We consider it the perfect amount of nature--you are surrounded by trees and animals (horses from the stables nearby, polo ponies in an adjacent ranch, cows and sheep across the street, hummingbirds), but you are also minutes away from fabulous restaurants, farmers markets, scenic countryside and the vineyards of Napa and Sonoma.
