About this property
Waterfront Cottage, The Captains Cabin is a romantic, remote spot in the PNW.
A quiet romantic waterfront home is the perfectly positioned on Pickering Passage of the Puget Sound. Famed Walkers' Landing looks across the water at Harstene Island, the view is a constant changing drama unfolding on this body of water, named after a naturalist on a Wilkes expedition. Pickering Passage flows past the mouths of Hammersley Inlet, Totten Inlet, and Eld Inlet. It is a nutrient rich area, producing oysters that grow rapidly. Come enjoy the view from the bank of Abbondanza, a property designed by artist Ray Turner, graduate of Stadium HS in Tacoma. Attending college in Washington. Oregon and California, undergraduate for four years. The next four years at Art Center College of design where he taught after graduation for many years. Enjoy the view from 34 windows and doors in the Captain's Cabin a cedar sided exterior, wrapped in pine from floor to ceiling inside. The 1950's table and chairs in the breakfast nook, boast a great view, with a fully equipped Kitchen, with retro style appliances, to compliment the beautiful barn lights, antique fixtures, and chandeliers. All the lights are on dimmers setting a romantic interior when the sun goes down. The outdoor lighting sets a mood as well as guides you to the fire pit or railing to sit under the stars and look at the sound. The bedding is all cotton, with a goose down comforter and cotton quilts. The pillows are high quality goose down. There are decks off the kitchen and master bedroom, to enjoy the sunrise, sunset and all the wonders the passage has to offer. The natural stone staircase and gravel paths will take you to the wooden railed staircase access to the beach, where you can kayak, windsurf, paddle board, fish, whatever you like to do on the water. After your water sports, or walk along the gravel beach, go up take a hot outdoor shower, soak in the claw foot tub, take a sauna, or do all three. Abbondanza is difficult to describe, it has bountiful sea life, always common to see any number of birds, including bald eagles. It is quiet, peaceful, and has an effect on you that will make you wish you could stay longer, wanting more. The sauna is a favorite building where you can enjoy a warm eucalyptus infused relaxing space. Then take a hot outdoor shower overlooking the Sound. Rock away an hour on the master deck in teak rocking chairs with your favorite evening drink. Welcome!

Stayed here for 2 days and it was a wonderful place! A very quaint getaway on a well taken care of property. The owners were excellent at being available and timely with any question or request we had. I'll go back again for sure!

We had an absolutely magical stay at Ray’s cabin. Peaceful, serene. Absolutely perfect place to slow down, unwind and watch the sky move over the water.

I’m so happy you were our guests. It was a pleasure hosting you. Thank you Robyn for choosing us.
Such a naturally enchanting setting! So cozy a cabin - delightful even during the rainy week we were there. Such a considerate host! Our stay in Ray’s cabin was an experience unto itself.
We had such a fabulous stay. The property was as described, it was meticulously clean, and communication with the manager/owner was great. I can't begin to describe how amazing this place is - it's more of an experience/lifestyle than just a place to stay. I can't wait to go back.

I am so glad you enjoyed it! We hope you do come back as soon as you are able. Thank you for the great review.
Just the quiet getaway we needed. Ray was super nice and very quick to answer any questions we had, even called the local grocery store to check what kind of fresh fish they had that day. We did not want to leave and can't wait to return very soon.
Beauriful property! We were able to just relax and take in the serenity and beauty of the location. Sarah was so easy to communicate with and really responsive. Will recommend this to friends for sure!

Hi Tracy,
I am so sorry I didn't see this. We are so happy you chose us. Come again when you can.
We had an lovely time at this property. The house is clean and comfortable, the kitchen is well stocked, and the views are picturesque. We especially loved having coffee on the porch, kayaking in the bay, and the outdoor shower. It’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy the simpler pleasures in life. Ray is an amazing host. He is responsive, thoughtful, and made sure we had everything we needed and so much more. If you want to escape, this is the place for you!

Thank you Erin, we’re so glad you were our guests and that you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind words and compliments. I hope you are able to return sometime. You will always be welcome.
The view from Captains Cabin is stunning and given the windows in the cabin, the view is constantly in front of you. The cabin is brilliantly designed and well-outfitted. We did a lot of cooking and found everything we needed. The sauna and outdoor shower were a treat. And I can't forget to mention how thoughtful Ray was and how easy he was to deal with. We will definitely be back.

Sean thank you for the review. I’m just learning where to respond to them. Sorry it took this long. Please come back anytime and thank you for the thoughtful review.
I highly recommend this rental. It is quiet with breathtaking views of the Puget Sound. If you’re as lucky as me, you may see a pod of Orcas swim through.
Kitchen is stocked with any tool you may need. Just stop at the grocery store and you’re all set.
There is a breakfast nook off the sleeping area. Fabulous for a sunrise cup of Coffee.
o wow, we loved this place! Ray was such a lovely person to communicate/ and he set up this spot so well. You can tell it is well loved and used as it feels so homey. We could've just stayed at the property the whole time, enjoying everything about it! Very lovely neighbors that offered us freshly harvested oysters. A wonder haven of the world.

Sammie thank you both for coming also for the review! Please know you’re always Welcome. I’m so glad you had a great time.
We wanted to find a very special place, on the water, near the place we married 50 years ago. The cabin was beyond perfect. It was hosted and curated by an artist, clean, quiet, comfortable, well equipped, full of special touches, and gorgeous. Ray was a gracious and communicative host. When my daughter and son arranged time to join us for our celebration, Ray helped us find equally lovely cabins for them within walking distance. We could have spent our entire stay in the rockers on the porch, overlooking the water and catching glimpses of orcas, but there were other fun things to do: the sauna, kayaking, walks down the path to the beach below, the fire circle and picnics at the outside table. We hope to return often.
This is the sort of place you wish you could keep a secret so you could keep going back again and again and it wouldn't change, it wouldn't be booked - it would just be your little getaway. But then nobody else would get to enjoy the joy of this little gem, and it'd be a shame not to help share all of the owner's hard work and obvious care in putting together something amazing to be enjoyed.
We absolutely enjoyed our time here, soaked up every minute we had, and would absolutely come back in a heartbeat. Probably the best review I can give here is that everything about the place and the cabin put us at ease, and gave us the escape we needed. It really was a fantastic experience.
Thank you!!

Gosh, Sarah said, “these guys were the best guests. They put every dish away, and left the place spotless.”
I thought what a wonderful thing to be able to share a property I love and to have it so appreciated.
Thank you for your generous kind words and for taking such good care of it while you were here.
The kayaks were delivered right after you left, so next time you won’t need to rent them.
Please do come back when you get a chance.
5 stars is simply not sufficient. We have stayed in many VRBO/ Home Away/ Air B&B’s- but this place: MAGICAL. If you want to truly escape, book without haste! My instinct is to downplay the serenity, because I am a selfish human who hopes this gem will always be available to us when we need an escape. I’m so thankful Ray and Sally are not like-minded! They graciously (and I do mean that - lovely people - with generous hearts and spirits across the board) open their sanctuary to the scrutiny of the world- one party at a time, (in my opinion) to promote the feeling of extended community and peace. This is a healing place. Ray’s artist’s eye is apparent everywhere- from the lovely landscape lighting that comes on at dusk (making evening trips to the sauna and shower much easier!) to his own original works peppered throughout. Coming from the Midwest we were a bit concerned about safety and ‘West Coast’ hostility. Don’t believe the narrative being pushed in the media, my friends! We did not meet one person that wasn’t welcoming and lovely in this little community. This is not the city- or a high rise hotel with room service. This is ‘abundance’. And you will feel that across the board as you explore the grounds. The bedding is exceptional- like sleeping in a cocoon of clouds. The sauna is restorative- and it’s easy to let your imagination wander as you relax inside.. We used it daily. The kayaking was a hoot for we ‘landlubbers’ as well- (adventures abound!) A neighbor (and new friend) pulled oysters from the sound, gave us a ‘shucking 101’ class, and even brought by a homemade sauce his wife makes that they enjoy. I could literally wax poetic for pages- but- I will close by tempting you a bit further: there are so many more enchanting surprises that await to delight as you step into the realm that is Abbondanza. You will not regret this stay, I assure you. It really was one of the best times we’ve had in a long time! Thank you, again- to the gracious hosts and neighbors who made this such a special time. We do hope our paths cross again soon!

All the best,

We have been using VRBO and similar apps for some time for getaways, but our experience here was by far the best we've had. Ray is a wonderful host and is so helpful with details that make a great trip even better. We treated ourselves to a week, and could immediately feel ourselves relax. The cabin and grounds are designed with thought and care. Beauty everywhere, from the sound below the cabin to wildflowers and wildlife (we saw pods of orcas, deer, herons, eagles and more). Amazing art just adds to the experience. We most certainly will return!
Did not spend a lot of time on the property other than in evening but enjoyed every bit of it when we could. Great place right by the water, quiet and super nice neighbors.

Thank you for coming with your daughter. Come back anytime.
Everything about this perfect! The location is quiet, the décor is spot on, the landscaping superb! I will certainly be looking to go back here again, and probably not soon enough.
Our family flew up to Washington to celebrate a birthday, and we couldn’t have picked a more perfect place to stay! Once we arrived at the gated entrance, we drove onto the property and up the driveway to a beautiful, picturesque scene of the Puget Sound. Located on the Pickering Passage, with a view of Harstine Island across the way, the property itself is gorgeous. You can tell the landscaping was well thought out with all different kinds of species of plants and trees, as well as beautiful, natural stone paths and steps. The three structures – the captain’s cabin, the church, and the firehouse – are all unique and striking in their own way. Having the three separate places to stay was nice for us, being that there were three couples staying on the property. The captain’s cabin has a stunning view of the water. We loved waking up to that incredible view and sitting on the porch in the rocking chairs, taking it all in with our morning coffee. The church was very cool, as it looks like a chapel with the high pitch ceiling and cupula, and the exquisite stained-glass windows. It has a spacious bathroom with a sliding door and massive claw foot tub. Right outside the bathroom is a sauna which was an awesome bonus! The firehouse is the first property you see when entering the driveway, it was actually an old firehouse that was converted into a wonderful living space. The first thing we noticed was the big stone fireplace which made the room so cozy and warm. It has a full kitchen and bathroom as well (like the captain’s cabin). The back doors open to a private deck and garden with a fenced arbor. While each of the cabins are special in their own way – they all have incredibly high-quality linens, and everything else you can imagine for a comfortable stay, along with unbelievably beautiful art. All of the rooms are curated with so much thought and talent. The nature surrounding the property made our stay extra special, we were lucky enough to even see a pod of orcas swim by! There are kayaks provided down on the beach, so getting to go kayaking was one of our favorite parts of the trip. We loved grilling on the Weber grill and enjoying the firepit on the property – we barely had to leave since it had every amenity we could have wished for. The weekend flew by and we didn’t want to leave the tranquility and magic of this property. Ray has created such a special atmosphere at Abbondanza, and we can’t wait for our next trip here.

The Orchard Beach Captain’s Cabin in Grapeview, Washington was off-the-charts relaxing and rejuvenating nature experience. The location on the Pickering passage; the unique, clean, well stocked, quiet and very comfortable cabin; and the very gracious and accommodating host (Ray) make this VRBO a rare and an exceptional vacation destination in the Olympic peninsula. Our two day stay at the Captain’s Cabin allowed us an opportunity to experience a beautiful sunny day for kayaking and calm peaceful drizzly day for relaxing. Rain or shine this spot on the Pickering Sound is amazing. Ray is a super friendly and welcoming host. I recommend staying at his Captain’s Cabin if you find yourself in the Grapeview, Washington area.

Fabulous house, less fabulous rental process
The house is esthetically off the charts with a comfortable, artistic blend of retro cabin, contemporary gallery & personal library vibe. However, the owners really don't get how the rental home business works. There was a communication lag of nearly a week after my first message to them. I finally just booked thinking I guess I'll see if this is really for rent or not. (He couldn't get messages because he was working on the property - where we later successfully received phone calls, texts & emails so???) Then he called at a really inconvenient time and verbally rattled off all the essential info. It needs to be in writing. This info doesn't appear for reference in his listing, is not laid out in any email AND there is no "welcome" packet, booklet or single sheet of paper with critical info in the cabin. I can't remember ever arriving to no written information. There was not even the local property manager's name & phone. The one in VRBO listing is not the current one! Once there I left a voice message for him as there was no hot water for the bath in "the church". The huge bathtub was a major reason I rented this property. I didn't hear back until we had already left 3 days later. Anyway beautiful house, grounds & setting - complete knockout. But truly the most disorganized, missing in action rental process ever.

I am sorry to get this review, I am sorry Jenny wrote it given what my experience with her was. Rather than address all the points. I will only say the review is unfortunate, for both parties.
We have had just under fifty guests with VRBO. We have had only five star reviews, and it has often been noted that we do an exceptional job of communication in those reviews.
I attempted to do the same with Jenny, four times in five days. I received only emails saying, "I will call tomorrow", and then she said she was on her way to the property.
The review she gave is again unfortunate and quite untrue from what I experienced with her. I am happy that we have had some of the best guests anyone could ever wish for. We will continue to strive for excellence, including our communications and hope for more of you looking for an exceptional stay.
Well maintained. Very comfortable. Great view. Relaxing. Our host answer all the questions. Looking for stay there again soon.

This cabin and it's perks were amazing! Just bring food and no dishes or spices needed. All details have been thought of. Even the soap was handmade and luxurious. They had kayaks and an beautiful sauna all at no extre charge. The view is something hard to describe. You are one with nature as you watch the fish jump and feel the calm sounds of nature in the morning. It's hard to describe and so comforting. This was a place to just be with someone you love.

About the host
Hosted by Ray Turner
I'm an artist, living in Los Angeles County, Pasadena. I graduated from Stadium H.S. in Tacoma where I first fell in love the the Pacific Northwest. I moved to Pasadena after my first four years of college, to attend Art Center College of Design for the next four. After graduating from Art Center, I taught there for several years until I took a leave of absence to paint full time. I've been painting full time now for twenty some years. I love the Pacific North West, and always wanted a place on the Puget Sound since I was a boy. I purchased these properties as an art project of sorts. The location and attributes were awe inspiring for me, so I decided to build a small compound where one could sit and watch a fire, the water, the trees blowing in the wind whatever came into view. It is a peaceful, quiet place, that has the magic of the Pickering Passage, changing constantly. I can't over bill it, it is a remarkable place. The charm of the little cottages or cabins, are a comfortable addition to the natural beauty of the trees, plants, view of the water, and Harstene Island. The work we did on the interiors and exteriors are uniquely comforting. The bedding and the furnishings are high quality natural fabrics that I personally love. You won't want to get out of the beds, they are as comfortable as can be. It is my good pleasure to share Abbondanza with you. Please come be our guests when you can.
Why they chose this property
I bought and developed this because of the location and it's inherent beauty. It doesn't have a shopping center near by, nor a place to walk to a restaurant. Those accommodations are an easy drive, but what this place is, is quiet, peaceful, and remote. There are a small group of homes at the end of a road, with one way in and out. The trees are tall and old, I've also added many ornamental ones, and too many flowers and plants to count. Jasmine, clematis, and hydrangea, is climbing on all the structures, with hundreds of different flowers, that will be blooming from spring through the fall. The stars are brilliant on a clear night. I have said many times that it is magical, there have been many guests describe it the same way as well. If you're looking for peace and quiet, surrounded by trees on the puget sound with all of its wonder, this will become one of your favorite memories and places to stay.
What makes this property unique
There is a cabin with a full bathroom that can be rented with the Captain's Cabin. The Church has a lovely view of the water as well. Also wrapped in pine, wide plank floors and a six foot clawfoot tub and shower. Inquire about The Church which sleeps two adults. The outdoor shower was a surprise in that I wanted to have one for convenience when coming up from the beach. I like it so much that I use it in the rain, and snow, as well. The Sauna is also a pleasant, very healthful, during and afterward, you are without a doubt, relaxed and ready for a long nap. A couple drops of eucalyptus oil in the water bucket, a spoon on the hot rocks will send up a warm, wonderful scented steam that will set your olfactory into deja vu, never to be forgotten.
