This historic home in the center of Bass Harbor village offers a way to experience the beauty of Mount Desert Island away from the crowds and tourist buses. Come and enjoy authentic cottage living at a fraction of Bar Harbor prices. This property has a front house, Harbor View Cottage (this listing), and a back house, Bass Harbor Hideaway, which are both available for summer rentals. The houses share a very thick common wall and have separate entrances from the driveway for privacy.
Harbor View Cottage overlooks Bass Harbor, a scenic marina filled with lobster boats. The Cottage offers a view of the harbor from its lawn, living room and two of the bedrooms, including spectacular Maine sunsets.
Harbor View Cottage is spacious, sunlit and comfortable--a quiet, elegant outpost from which to enjoy all that Mt. Desert Island and Acadia have to offer. It features:
• Three bedrooms, plus a finished attic living space. The bedrooms include one with 2 twin beds, a second with 2 twin beds, and a third with 1 king-size bed. Two of the bedrooms overlook Bass Harbor. There are also 4 additional twin beds in the attic. • There is a full bath on the second floor, and an additional shower/sink/toilet in the finished attic. • Living room, dining room, eat-in kitchen (full-size appliances). • Linens and towels are included. • Washer/dryer and charcoal grill are provided. • Expansive front yard with plenty of room for kids to run around and explore. Shuttle stops every hour on the hour, and picks up near the base of the driveway. • High-speed broadband WIFI at speeds of 300 Mbps downloads / 10 Mbps uploads (typically fast enough to stream). Performance may vary based on the number of devices being used. • Note: AT&T cell phone service works well in Bass Harbor, but Verizon and T-Mobile offer spotty service. If you have Verizon or T-Mobile, you may want to make park and other reservations ahead of time.
Got a Large Group? The back house, "Bass Harbor Hideaway," sleeps 4-6 people. For groups of up to 16, you may want to consider renting both houses.
**We are following our routine cleanings between tenants with EPA-registered disinfectants to kill germs on high-touch surfaces such as kitchen counters, appliances, doorknobs, cabinet knobs, light switches, faucets, toilet handles and television remote controls. We also air out the house between renters.**
A $15 per-person, per-night fee for guests in addition to 6 will be assessed. This helps us cover additional cleaning and maintenance costs.

Thanks for coming back, Christopher! The cottage has been a big part of keeping our extended family connected, so I’m glad to hear it has been a blessing to you all as well.
Great location for a trip to Acadia! Lovely, roomy house for 4 adults. The location is very peaceful, with a view of the water. Would definitely stay again.
This is a perfect place for a large family to have space and enjoy each other’s company. It’s near enough to easily visit Southwest Harbor, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc., yet off the beaten path. It is such a quaint cottage and has all the amenities needed for a comfortable stay. I hope we’ll have the opportunity to visit again!
We had a wonderful time staying at The Harbor View Cottage. The property is spacious, comfortable, and perfectly suited the needs of our group of 9 adults. The view of the harbor is stunning, especially at sunset. The host was very responsive and provided great recommendations of things to do in the area. We highly recommend!
Thank you we had a wonderful stay at your home. It had everything we could ask for and we really appreciated the outdoor fire pit overlooking the bay. It was a wonderful stay and would come back.
We had a wonderful time staying at this property! It was clean, the kitchen was well stocked and the location was gorgeous! The owner was very communicative and wonderful to work with. We will be back!
This property was exactly what we were looking for, our short weekend was made enjoyable due to the quality of the property and it’s excellent location. The property owners & management were very helpful.

A beautiful location and view with plenty space. It's an older property with rustic interior and appliances but the location, charm and view are great!!! Easy to get to the park and around the island. Have stayed twice and would return!

Had a great stay in Bass Harbor. The house is in a great location and has plenty of space. My young kids loved it especially the attic! Recommend it if you want to stay somewhere with a true small town feel. The owner was super helpful and very responsive to messages. High marks!

I’m so glad you enjoyed your time at Harbor View Cottage. Thanks for this wonderful review!
We enjoyed a lovely stay at the Bass Harbor home. The home was able to accommodate 8 adults nicely. While we mostly spent our time in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park, we did enjoy a nice dinner in the surrounding area and especially enjoyed an early morning walk to Bass Harbor Lighthouse for the sunrise.

Thanks for taking time to review Harbor View Cottage!
The house was in a quiet location with a nice view. Communication with the owner was great. The house had everything in it that we would need and was clean and cute.
This home was the perfect stay! As a large group of friends traveling there was plenty of space for everyone. The kitchen was well equipped with everything needed to cook and then some! Plenty of linens and beds were comfy. The area around the house was quiet and felt like we were locals. Easy drive to Acadia NP and Bar harbor. I would absolutely stay here again and recommend to friends and family looking to visit the area!
We loved our vacation in this wonderful, spacious home. It has everything you could need and Bass Harbor and Bernard were fun areas to explore more thoroughly. We already love everything about Mount Desert from decades of visiting. Missing the sunsets and the bell buoys now. Thank you, Bobbie! We hope to return.

I’m so glad you had a lovely time at Harbor View Cottage. Come see us again!
This year’s family trip was to Acadia. We found a lovely house that accommodated 5 of us in the tiny town of Bass Harbor. Local fish restaurant is directly across the street. Other amenities, grocery store, are located in Southwest Harbor just 10 minutes away and Acadia is about a 30 minute drive to Visitor Center. House is very comfortable, clean, quiet, and kitchen is well stocked. We had a great time.

Thanks for reviewing us. I'm glad you had a good stay!
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! It's super clean and peaceful. Communication with Bobbie was also excellent. She was prompt and thorough. The area information she provided was also helpful since a few minor injuries required us to adjust our hiking plans.
We came from CA, MO, and NE to visit a tavern that has the same name as my late husband, Peter Trout. We wanted to experience the harbor areas, and the Atlantic was right at the end of the driveway. Bass Harbor, Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Cadillac Mountain sunrise, and Southwest Harbor were all close and shopped thru. Quaint cafe's and unique eateries filled us with fabulous seafood.

About the host
Hosted by Bobbie Turner
My family has been coming to Mount Desert Island (MDI) since 1991. We love the character of Bass Harbor village--the slower pace of life here, the sound of the bell buoys on the water, and the unique beauty and history of MDI. There really is no place in the world like it!
As my parents have gotten older, the next generation has stepped in to manage our summer vacation home for visitors. Our goal for each of you is to allow you to experience the simple beauty of the island and to fall in love with it, just as we have.
Our house is divided by an interior wall into two separate homes: Harbor View Cottage in the front (this listing) and Bass Harbor Hideaway in the back (vrbo #351747). Harbor View Cottage is larger, more updated, and offers a picturesque view of Bass Harbor from the living room bay window. Bass Harbor Hideaway is less updated, more rustic, and offers a great value for this prime island location.
Our family also owns a ski townhouse rental property in Breckenridge, Colorado: "BreckenDen" (vrbo #892238). Please let us know if we can answer any questions about our rental properties. We'd love to have you stay with us!
Why they chose this property
Bass Harbor is an active fishing village with a mix of vacationers and year-round residents. We love that our side of the island---known as the 'Quiet Side'---is not busy or commercial, but has held onto the original character of the area. Stay with us and you'll discover a true sense of the beauty and slower pace of coastal Maine (away from the tour buses and traffic).
Because our home is right across the street from the harbor, visitors enjoy cool sea breezes and the sounds of bell buoys and fog horns--all things you'd miss with rentals that aren't at the water's edge.
What makes this property unique
Harbor View Cottage overlooks an active, lobster-fishing harbor, with photo-worthy sunsets right outside the door. Step back in time as the fog rolls in, imagining the area's nautical history, which includes the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse and surrounding seafaring community. The Cottage is also walking distance to the Seafood Ketch restaurant.
