Perfect getaway

We arrived at BML on at cool October Evening. Hurricane Helene had just come through not quite a month ago. But even with the horrific damage the beauty of the area was amazing. We brought our 3 large dogs with us and it could not be a more perfect place for them. They hiked with us and swam under the little water falls. We saw Turkeys and a wild boar and there was a team up the road trying to trap a bear. We did hear something jump on roof in middle of the night and then it started a clicking noise, a little scary. The leaves were absolutely gorgeous. We did not have phone service or Wi-Fi. We were not able to see the Brown Mountain lights as the bridge was still out and many trails were closed due to hurricane damage. A week is not even long enough to do all the activities that are available. We really enjoyed ourselves! Thank you Jeff for letting us stay at your beautiful place. And thanks for the extra night so we could go to the fair in Morganton 🤗 internet, which we did miss but saw how hard all The line men were working 7 days a week.

Perfect Quiet and Tranquility

If you are looking to get away from it all, this is the place. We arrived and all you could hear is nature and the creek waterfalls right below the house. It is very secluded and exactly what we were looking for. There is a hiking trail right outside the house that lead us an overlook for Grandfather Mtn. The dogs enjoyed the waterfalls and pools to cool off in. The house had everything needed to cook and enjoy a peaceful and serene weekend. We spent both nights on the back deck just listening to the rushing water below. We will definitely be back soon!

MIXED FEELINGS…

While the property itself was nice. The water access was very grown up and not as easy to access but it did have nice water close to the property once you got there. My biggest complaint was the 9 mile dirt road to the property which took approx 40-45 min to maneuver. Very bumpy and dusty. Once there you would have no access to any restaurant unless back down the dirt road. Left after first night. We rented to be close to The Highland Games. The road to that was much worse. The property manager forgot to send me the code but there was no signal out there had to drive back to borrow someone’s land line to call. He did respond quickly and apologized. I would not rent it again but it was a very secluded property

We had a good stay but ………

Rented this property as it is listed as wheelchair accessible which is technically true but this is an old house & the layout was not conducive to a wheelchair. Listing as waterview which is not true in the summer time. THE WATERFALL & BEACH near THE HOUSE IS AMAZING & WE ENJOYED IT. However, i was expecting my sister to be able to see the creek from the house or at least from the deck which was not possible. SECLUDED IS AN UNDERSTATMENT ! Research the area before booking so you know what to expect 7.5 miles on BMB road (a dirt road) to reach this house. If you come & stay without leaving for excursions this would be a great spot large yard, great creek, fire pit. Less than a mile to a swimming hole on the creek. Betsy’s store is close by if you have to get something but also very pricey we bought several bags of ice definitely pay for the convenience as the ice maker did not work & there were only 4 ice trays.Thursday BMB road was closed; we had go out hwy 90 for our trip to Linville falls. It took an hour & more than half the trip was on a rough dirt road which was single lane with switchbacks in many spots House needs a deep cleaning; you could tell that it had been surfaced cleaned prior to our arrival, linens and towels were provided and clean. Kitchen was well stocked for cooking with plenty of seHouse needs a little TLC overall & a lighting upgrade. surround sound system & couches were great for a family movie. Visited in July no AC in downstairs bedroom

Great weekend retreat

Our family of five stayed here for the weekend and enjoyed being able to escape the world for a bit. The house is fairly clean but obviously not used much. Lots of dust everywhere and lots of dead bugs in the corners and the light fixtures. There are also wasps coming from somewhere - we killed eight of them in the first 30 minutes of getting to the house. There are two bathrooms, but the upstairs one is really the only one you want to use - the other is small, not well lit, kinda dirty, and has a toilet that fits a toddler. As with all home rentals, the beds are semi comfy and the pillows kind suck. The kitchen is decently stocked with enough items to cook a meal. But the whole house really needs a deep clean. What really makes this house worth it is the yard. The creek that runs behind the house is awesome. Pools to wade in, rocks to slide down, etc. The kids had a great time playing there all weekend. So if you’re looking for a house in the middle of no where to stay in all weekend (and you don’t need a super clean place) this may be an option.

Quiet and Peaceful Stay

We thoroughly enjoyed our long weekend stay at this property. One of my favorite things was sitting on the deck reading a book and listening to the rushing water from the creek below; so relaxing! I also enjoyed opening the kitchen window in the mornings and listening to the rushing water as I prepared breakfast for my family. It was so nice to have a comfortable place to stay and bring our dogs. Our chocolate lab thoroughly enjoyed playing and swimming in the creek each day! We hiked both to the waterfall as well as the Grandfather overlook (which is where the trailhead leads from the upstairs door) while we were there. Don't forget your bug spray with all the hiking and time at the creek. We plan to visit again! Such a lovely stay!

Wonderful family get-away!

I planned this surprise weekend trip to celebrate my husband & adult twins birthdays (turned 19) in February. We also brought our senior dog who is like another child to us/sibling to our kids, but can't handle the stress of being around other people or dogs. This was the PERFECT get-away from it all!! We were able to unwind, unplug, and get back to nature (& one another). Other than the beautiful & comfy home that gave each of us plenty of our own space, our favorite time was spent exploring the trails behind the home & the walks down to the creek right outside the front door. We loved that it was so secluded from the chaos of the cities, but had everything we would want to do right there on the property! We hope to be able to go back & stay during all four seasons to capture all it's beauty.

Amazing outdoors

The grounds of this property are amazing! We spent more time exploring than we did inside. We used the outdoor fire on the deck every night. The sounds of rushing water could be heard from the deck and was very relaxing. Be prepared getting to the property as you go along lots of gravel dirt roads. Be prepared if going into Blowing Rock as the roads are winding and narrow at times. Avoid driving around at night. The house itself was quaint and a little tight, especially in the kitchen, though there were 6 of us so as long as some were in the living room it all worked out. Was very disappointed that the downstairs shower did not work. It barely trickled and did not warm up. Owner was not easily accessible to help with the issue, and hopefully it has been fixed, Lots of clutter outside on the deck, some of the concrete steps were breaking apart. It is definitely an older home, and needs some tender care, but don’t expect to be surfing the internet as it was slow. My family had a great time and think this would be a fun summer visit with all the creeks and waterfalls.

Awesome property, house not comfy and clean

We really tried to make the best out of our stay. We thoroughly enjoyed the property and exploring around it. Couldn’t ask for a better location to unplug. There were issues upon arrival, like gritty dirty countertops, flies and various bugs accumulated in windows and on counters, a wad of black hair on nightstand, a science experiment of mold and funk growing in the grills provided, cobwebs above the beds in master….. you get the picture. I felt like I needed to clean before we could settle in. The owner/manager is very nice, the maid service is lacking. We were all so thankful to come home and take showers and wash clothes as we just didn’t feel clean while there. This is sad because the property and house is unique and has a ton of history I’m sure. I did make owner aware as he possibly doesn’t visit property in between stays.

About the host

Hosted by Jeff Shook

Host profile image
The original owners had incredible vision even back in the 50's to build such a unique and beautiful home they called 'The Hideaway'. They constructed a 12 ft steel water wheel down on the creek that was beautiful. When we bought the home we wanted to restore the property and water wheel to its grandeur and make it even better to share with folks that love the mountains. My wife and I invite you to experience the vacation cabin rental that you will always remember the good times with your family. We re-named the hideaway to the Brown Mountain Lodge. Our goal is to provide one of the best family oriented vacation and cabin rentals in the Boone and Blowing Rock NC area.

In 2007 I wrote a true short ghost story about the adventures my brother and I have experienced in the Brown Mountain Area. The book is a collection of and titled '13 Terrifying Tales from the North Carolina Piedmont'. A copy of the book and pictures to document my tales as well as other books about the area are in the Lodge for your reading pleasure around the campfire. This book is published by Lorimer Press and is available at Barnes and Noble and other bookstores in the region.

Why they chose this property

We admired and dreamed about owning this home as a kids and when the opportunity presented itself we made it happen. The Brown Mountain area and Wilson Creek Gorge is off the beaten path and has been undiscovered for years. People are finding out about it now since the River was designated a Wild and Scenic River in 2004. If your looking for a private paradise pet friendly vacation home in a secluded Mountain setting with beautiful streams, waterfalls and River Gorge then you just found it.

What makes this property unique

BML is a multi level home with 3 BR's, the living area and kitchen are comfy and set up for family fun and enjoying the home. We have WiFi and HiDef TV for staying connected with the world. Guests really enjoy our outdoor living area with fireplace, grills and swings that looks over the creek. Right up behind the house are terrific trails that we have views of on our web site.
