About this property
Beautiful C17th Cottage - pet-friendly, near Lake District, idyllic village.
Cumberland Cottage is a beautifully presented, pet friendly, property located in the heart of the tranquil Cumbrian village of Orton. Built in 1632 the cottage is one of the oldest properties in the village. Formerly part of the Duke of Cumberland Inn and more recently the village store and post office, Cumberland Cottage was lovingly renovated in 2012 to provide well equipped, contemporary holiday accommodation of a very high standard.
Orton is a hidden gem, once described by Wainwright as one of Westmorland's loveliest villages, it lies on the Coast to Coat walk and is surrounded by breath-taking scenery. Just 2 miles from the M6, it has an enviable location nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks and approximately 12 miles from the Cumbrian towns of Kendal, Sedbergh, Appleby and Penrith.
Cumberland cottage is an ideal base for couples wanting to relax and enjoy the beautiful surrounding area by foot, visit nearby towns, or venture into the National Parks. You will find maps, walking guides and numerous leaflets in the cottage to help you plan your stay. We also have a detailed Cottage Information File and a Comment's Book brimming with positive reviews from previous guests, many of whom have taken the time to recommend their favourite places to visit or eat out.
On your arrival you will find a tea tray with biscuits or a homemade cake and a fresh pint of milk in the fridge. We always ensure that the cottage has a starter supply of essential times such as washing up liquid, toilet rolls, kitchen paper, tin foil, cling film, hand soap and salt & pepper.
One well behaved dog for a small extra charge. All we ask is that it is not allowed on the furniture or left unattended in the the property without our prior consent.
The cottage adjoins our own house and we are only too happy for guests to pop over to see us if they have any queries or require any further information. Equally we realise that many guests value their own privacy and we always ensure that we do not intrude unnecessarily.

My name is Gill Abram and I am originally from Bolton. I moved to Cumbria over 10 years ago to work in Kendal. I often visited the charming and unspoilt village of Orton and never dreamt that one day we'd would be lucky enough to live here!
Why they chose this property
In 2009 my partner and I took on the massive project of renovating one of the oldest properties in Orton into a family home.
As our home began to emerge from the rubble and dust we struck upon the idea of turning the adjoining granny flat into a luxurious holiday cottage. We felt that Orton was ideally placed for exploring the Lakes District and Yorkshire Dales yet provided a peaceful alternative to the more commercial villages & towns of the Lakes. The local pub, well stocked village shop and chocolate shop all combine to ensure that visitors are well catered for and the numerous idyllic walks from the doorstep make it a dog owners paradise! My Labradoodle, Bramble, definitely enjoys living here!

What makes this property unique
Location, location location! Not only is Cumberland Cottage a well equipped, modern and beautifully restored holiday cottage, it boasts the perfect location in the centre of the quaint and peaceful Yorkshire Dales village of Orton. Surrounding the village you will find a special landscape of immense beauty and character, yet a couple of miles down the road you will enter England's largest National Park, The Lake District, home to Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake and thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere.
