Our unique off-grid jungalow offers a one-of-a-kind escape to relax, reconnect with nature, and experience adventure in the heart of the Hawaiian rainforest. This cozy rustic cabin features a queen bed, traditional open-air Hawaiian style outdoor shower (private), peaceful surroundings, & an unforgettable connection to the outdoors.
This property is also home to a nonprofit animal rescue, where rescued dogs, cats, & chickens are lovingly cared for.
Hot tub access for additional fee.
The space Experience the ultimate Big Island rainforest escape while still enjoying the comforts that make your stay relaxing and easy. Stay in a traditional Hawaiian-style cabin surrounded by lush jungle, tropical fruit trees, and the soothing sounds of nature.
Our property is off-grid and powered by a newly upgraded solar system with plenty of power storage plus an automatic backup generator, so you can enjoy a sustainable stay without sacrificing comfort. We also have strong Wi-Fi throughout the property and a 10,000-gallon rainwater catchment system that stays full year-round, providing endless hot rainforest showers.
This rustic jungle-inspired jungalow features exposed stud walls, built-in shelving, and an open airy feel designed to blend with the surrounding rainforest. The cabin includes a queen bed, mini fridge, propane heater, private full bathroom, covered lanai, and thoughtful modern touches like USB charging ports right next to the bed.
A shared outdoor-style kitchen is available in a separate structure and shared with just one other rental, creating a great opportunity to meet fellow travelers. The kitchen includes a brand-new washer and dryer, stainless steel sink, and all the cookware essentials needed to prepare meals during your stay.
To help you experience the island like a local, we provide a detailed welcome guide filled with our favorite beaches, hikes, waterfalls, scenic drives, farmers markets, restaurants, and hidden gems — including many free activities past guests have loved.
HOT TUB Relax beneath the stars in our hot tub featuring a plug-and-play spa surrounded by rainforest. If you would like to upgrade your stay to include a hot tub, access is available for an addition $20 per night for the duration of your stay and must be arranged at least one day ahead of reservation.
ISLAND SOUNDS & RAINFOREST EXPERIENCE At night, you’ll be surrounded by the sounds of the living rainforest. To get a feel for the nighttime ambiance, search “Bathing Suits and Rain Boots” on YouTube for examples of what the coqui frogs sound like at night. Think of it as the rainforest’s own nighttime quartet — a uniquely Hawaiian soundtrack that many guests find peaceful, cozy, and magical, while others may prefer complete silence. Please note the cabin window is screened for airflow and does not fully close, allowing you to fully experience the fresh mountain air and jungle atmosphere.
BEACH GEAR Guests are welcome to use our surfboards, boogie boards, snorkel masks, snorkels, and beach towels for island adventures.
ANIMALS & FARM LIFE We operate a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dog rescue on the property, so there may be rescue dogs on the acre at any given time. Guests are welcome to interact with the dogs after coordinating with the host, and some guests enjoy taking them on walks or outings to help socialize them and prepare them for adoption.
The property is also home to friendly cats, bunnies and chickens, adding to the authentic homestead experience.
TROPICAL HOMESTEAD We actively homestead and grow a variety of tropical foods throughout the property including lilikoi, bananas, papayas, pineapple, figs, strawberries, poha berries, sugar cane, lemons, blood oranges, rosemary, basil, and more depending on the season.
MASSAGES Rainforest massages are available on-site starting at $100/hour.
LOCATION We are located about 30 minutes from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and centrally positioned for exploring many other parts of the Big Island. Keep in mind the Big Island is much larger than the other Hawaiian islands, so longer scenic drives are part of the experience here.
CLIMATE At approximately 1,880 feet elevation, evenings can become cool and cozy, especially during the winter and rainy season. All cabins include propane heaters for comfort. If visiting during winter months, we recommend bringing light layers, a rain jacket, and rain boots for exploring the island comfortably.
ADDITIONAL DETAILS There are four cabins total on the one-acre property. While the cabins are nearby, guests generally find them far more private and peaceful than hotels or condo-style accommodations with shared walls.
This stay is ideal for travelers looking for a more authentic, sustainable, and immersive Hawaiʻi experience — combining comfort, nature, community, and adventure in one unforgettable setting.

Mahalo so much for your beautiful words! I’m so happy you and your boyfriend enjoyed your stay and felt the peace of being off-grid surrounded by nature. It truly means a lot to know you felt relaxed and connected here. You were such wonderful guests, and I’d be delighted to welcome you back anytime. Until next time, sending you both lots of aloha! 🌿✨
If you’re looking for a jungle getaway, then this place is it. Seclusion, privacy, outdoor shower, rainforest sounds all added to the allure of the bungalow. The queen bed was comfy and there was a heater for when it got chilly at night. Would definitely stay here again.

We would welcome you back anytime Brooks! Thanks for your stay and review!
Dawn has a lovely property within reasonable driving distance to Hilo, Volcano National Park, and beaches. If you read the description of the property and the reviews, you will not be surprised. Everything you need is there and you get a chance to interact with nature and fellow travelers. For a reasonably priced place to stay in the area, this property checks all the boxes.

Mahalo for the lovely review Carrie! It was a pleasure to host you!
Great, somewhat remote, totally off grid location!
Perfect for a romantic getaway or a single person looking to explore the island. Outdoor bathroom/shower like nothing I've experienced! Dawn is insightful and willing to share her island knowledge...
You can keep your stuffy hotel experience, I'll be back!

Thanks for staying with us! It was so nice to meet you both!
This property is an unusual little gem tucked away in the rainforest. The host has created nicely appointed, comfortable guest cabins. The cabins, the shared kitchen/dining building and the grounds are well maintained and artistically decorated. The host clearly cares deeply about what she is creating for her guests. The price was quite reasonable. If you are visiting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the east side of the island, then I highly recommend this property. It is a bit “out of the way”, but that should be expected if you want to experience something unique like this.
Truly different experience especially for people who come from a city. We came home early every day so we can shower in the “jungle” watching the rain and hearing frogs. The apartment has everything you need for a short or long stay. The yard is beautiful with flowers and decorations. It definitely will make you feel like living in a rainforest.
Dawn is very friendly. We had great conversation every night in the kitchen. (We seem to always have the same dinner time). Her cats and dogs are super cute. She even gave us fresh eggs from her chickens every morning!
Dawn did a great job of communicating on her listing and all throughout our stay. So even if something wasn’t “perfect” we knew and that filled any gaps.
Be ready for rainy season if you come at that time! We should have for sure brought some panchos and extra flashlights (Dawn still has a lot of the gap fillers like umbrella, bug spray etc).
This was a great option for us as we did not want to fly with camping gear. This really was a sweet little space and we’d probably return when we visit the big island again as it’s close (and just far enough away) from Hilo and a quick drive to the volcanos.
