About this property

The Guard's Cottage at The Refinery

The Refinery is full of history. Built in 1914 to refine gold from the Waihi mine, it is a beautiful light-filled gallery-like space with exposed wooden beams and white concrete walls.
This houses our cafe 'The Refinery' (open Wed-Sun) where you are invited to enjoy a coffee and breakfast to fuel your holiday adventures.
The separate cottage is comfortable and private while still having access to the rest of the property and the convenience of being right in the heart of Paeroa. Minutes walk to all the antique shops, restaurants and, of course, the Hauraki Rail Trail.
The cottage is decorated in a retro style with plenty of books, pottery and kiwiana treasures. Ideal for a 2-3 adults or a couple with 1-2 kids. A giant avocado tree is just outside the door along with many other fruit trees dotted about the property.
The Karangahake Gorge is just a few minutes drive away with fantastic walks, swimming holes, and cycle paths to enjoy.
A little further on is historic Waihi and Waihi beach for swimming and surfing.
Just an hour and a half from Auckland-Paeroa is a great base for exploring the area.

Good location, although it's in the centre of Paeroa it was very quiet. Plenty of dog walks nearby. The cottage was as we expected. It had everything we needed, except for a tin opener.

Wonderful cottage in a great central location. There were some yummy treats waiting for us when we arrived, which was lovely.The rooms were well laid out; the bed was very comfortable. Kitchen had everything we needed. All in all, a great place to stay.

It was a delight to be welcomed with delicious baking. The accomodation was comfortable and close to town, but surprisingly quiet. It was also close to the to the cycle trail. Next time we’ll visit when the next door cafe is open . . .

Perfect Place to Stay in Paeroa

We had a terrific stay at the refinery with Nicky and Mike. Our cottage had everything we needed and more. They have thought of everything. The bed was comfortable and the towels were wonderful. We loved the garden with the avacado tree. We will come again.

A wonderful place for our dogs to roam.The garden was a relaxing place to sit and relax The advocado tree was handy for shade however the baby avos falling on our heads wasnt too good!!! There were day trips for a change of scenery.Lots of choice for cafes and eateries. The cafe on site was 5 star the staff friendly food delicious!!! The kitchen was well equipped Bathroom and towels top notch!! Would return there soon.

The cottage was easy to find and in such a cute little area. The two cars parked up the same drive made it a little difficult to get through but nothing major. The photos dont do it justice as this cottage is so gorgeous. The treats on arrive were a much welcomed surprise. Will absolutely stay again. Highly recommend A

Great little stay

My friend with a little dog and I enjoyed our stay in this little back cottage like stay behind the Refinery. I opted to sleep on the couch which was very comfortable if you didn't sleep in the middle 😉 which is standard for any couch like this. Great location with a park to walk your fur baby across the road, easy walk to the shops and the food at the cafe is yummy for a quick bite. Also, we liked the little cake treat in the kitchen for us when we arrived. The avocado tree is amazing!!! I would definitely stay here again.

My teenage daughter and I both loved our stay here. This place has everything we needed for a weekend in town, and the Refinery Cafe literally next door was a great breakfast option. I'll definitely be staying here again.

Loved this little cosy space. We were two kids (6 and 8) and two adults. Space worked out well for us. Having the cafe next door was amazing! Would absolutely rent again. Lovely little afternoon tea provided on our first day as well.
