About this property

Wonderland Mansion @ Serenity Lodges

This is for groups or families that are open to exploring a whole new indoor space or as I like to call it, WONDERLAND!!!!

This home and property has a unique layout with an open concept. The main floor of the house has vaulted ceilings with skylights and includes the shared areas of the large kitchen, living room (with a fireplace), and main bathroom. Head downstairs into the large basement with its 14 ft ceiling to relax for a movie or games night, or go for a dip in the hot tub or koi pond. There are two (2) covered porches to read, meditate, or simply hang out, with several walk-in gardens around the grounds. Those looking for a place to meditate or do yoga will have plenty of options to choose from!
Pets are welcome for a small additional fee - please make sure to let us know if you are bringing your furry friends as we have two cats.
**NEWLY RENOVATED: We have updated photos December 2021 and added 2 new walls in two of the bedrooms with sound proof insulation (see below), making them fully private and quieter**

The Full House booking includes exclusive use of the entire house, including the three (3) separate bedrooms, the walk out basement with 2 additional queen size beds, exclusive use of the full house, and priority (upon request) for the hot tub area. You will have complete privacy for your group inside the entire house.

Closest food options:

Groceries: East Sooke Grocer is a 10 minute drive down the road. It has basic food and supplies.

Restaurant: 17 Mile Pub has great pub food and good drinks, with a liquor store next door. It is a 20 minute drive, make sure to have a designated driver!

Delivery: search “Andy the Pizzaman OR 2-for-1 Pizza Sooke” for food delivery to the house. This is the only delivery service available in the area at the moment, call 250-642-5451 when ordering.

Great Country Living

We really enjoyed our time at this home. My wife and I and teenaged children enjoyed the quiet, private and quirky place. Candace was great at communicating with us, and worked hard to help resolve some concerns. Great place to stay and a really fun family time!

Great Weekend Getaway

We had a great experience renting this property for my friend’s 40th birthday celebration! I was a little worried because of the polarized reviews online, but everything was great! The house is open, airy and bright. It was perfect for a celebratory weekend away! Yes, there are rules for the property, as I expect there would be for most, but nothing over the top. It was really just about being respectful of the property and we had absolutely no problems! Candace and her partner were responsive and very friendly in all our communications leading up to and during our stay. They are clearly putting in the work to update this massive space, including a new shower, new paint and fireplace, and full walls on a couple of the bedrooms for those needing some extra privacy. The only suggestion I might offer would be to consider window coverings in the bathroom as part of planned updates. While it was so nice to see the outside from all angles throughout the house, we all agreed that we would feel more comfortable with window coverings in the bathroom, but that’s just us. This space is very eclectic, whimsical and quite charming for a fun weekend away!

Unique Rural, Relaxing Property

This may be the most unique place we have ever stayed in. The home is open and spacious yet has all sorts of nooks to explore. The grounds have several different places from the hot tub area, to the large kitchen pond, the fenced in garden area and an interesting and slightly bizarre tiki bar area that if refurbished could be great hangout. We came here to relax and do some hiking and were not disappointed. The property is in close proximity to East Sooke Park so there are lots of well marked trails close by. As an owner, Candace was very thorough in her communication and responded quickly to questions. If you're looking for a unique place to stay, this fits the bill.

Not wonderland, more like a less than ideal rabbit hole

Communication prior to arriving was not ideal. The house was not clean when we arrived • Beer bottles full of cigarette butts left on porch on no smoking property • Used cutlery left on outdoor table & used coffee cups left on back deck • Personal laundry (including underwear) left in machine • Uneaten & rotting food left in the fridge. Fridge/freezer were also full of personal items not leaving much room for our food • Surfaces not disinfected and floors were not clean • No notice home could potentially come with cats • Mice and ant problems; Dead mouse found in trap in drawers where cooking wear is stored, all cooking wear had to be recleaned and sanitized • One spare garbage bag and three rolls of toilet paper provided – Bring your own • Compost can by the sink near full upon arrival. Coffee ground box by sink half full, broken & spilling grounds • Paint & gear sitting out in the hallway • No shower curtains on showers (expectation you shower prior to hot tubbing) In terms of the space: • Amenities like fireplace not working (not informed until check in) • No $5000.00 dinning set that seats 12. We were provided with a glass & metal patio table and wooden chairs for 6, different than what is displayed in property photos. • BBQ partly rusted out and thick with grease • No outdoor or heated pool & you would not be able to swim in the pond as its full of algae and brown water, did not look fit for swimming • Please note: we were told after our stay that you can’t have drinks in the hot tub. Hot tub was dumped prior to our checkout time. • Many advertisements for hosts other businesses plastered through house including cleaning supplies and protein powders for purchase • Water spraying out of the back hose due to RV hook up, we took the initiative to attempt to fix to prevent damage to the property. Note theres an RV on the property that is being rented out in addition to the basement suite for 2. Mention of this is not listed on the VRBO property description. HUGE lack of transparency. Largest # in the RV was 5 (2 adults, 3 teens). Due to lack of transparency re: shared spaced, and not informing our party about the RV or its bookings, conflict arose with the other guests and a confrontation took place. Note explicitly: All outdoor property spaces are shared and may not be currently within health guidelines including but not limited to the hot tub. In our opinion the property description, photos and videos = misleading to current state

Coralyn left this review after She damaged the property and I kept part of her deposit. She, under the influence, instigated a fight with someone renting the RV at the back of the property, yelling across the acreage that “we paid $5000 to be here and we aren’t sharing the hot tub”. This wasn’t even true, they paid $4200 for a week for a big group. This - being a new listing, was half the price of any comparable 4000 square feet property which has 2.5 acres, koi fish pond and more. The hot tub was brand new water and clear as could be when they checked in. After their stay the hot tub and entire area (including my cover) smelled like old beer. I was gagging. I informed them that they spilled drinks in the hot tub and they clogged the dishwasher which left the cleaners with a full load of dishes to do and I had to call a plumber. We had guests checking in that night who were then upset about no dishwasher for their vacation but the property is remote and it took me a few days to organize the plumber coming on a week day. I did not charge them $350 hot tub dump fee or $50 dirty dishes fee. I only took the money for the plumber as they clogged a BRAND NEW dishwasher from absolutely huge chunks of food (which I have photos of) that they denied on check out. There is a fireplace in the basement and yes, the main floor living room fireplace is not currently in use. They were informed of this in advance. East Sooke is a rural area so yes, we have to have mice traps and ant traps out because without them there would be a problem but unfortunately her husband had to clear one of the Mouse traps. It’s a rural area so I stay on top of this best I can but all Homes in the area have to have preventative measures and counter measures for these things. I paid $5600 for a mad hatter tea party table that’s in the house, it’s custom wood and beautiful. I’m updating the photos now so whoever reads this can see that. This review was done out of spite and rage because I charged them for breaking my dishwasher and they didn’t want to take responsibility for picking a fight with the other guests in the RV. I’ve hosted for 8 years on various platforms but first time trying VRBO and unfortunately these guests didn’t give it a great name but I’m going to keep hosting here because I hope it’s just a one off and I’ve spent my life saving for the down payment to buy this house and create wonderland and I won’t let one negative review stop me from sharing this beautiful home with others.

Unique property

Unique property in a cool location not far from main Sooke. If you’re up for a hike East Sooke park is beautiful. The house is beautiful with lots of amenities and a great hot tub. We were missing a few things and the owner was quick to respond to our requests. Would go back.

Thank you Chantelle. We are continually adding different amenities to the house and property. This year we hope to have a sauna set up before the winter and there are several other projects on the go. Thank you again.
