We really loved this rental! It was the perfect place to stretch out and relax after skiing at the nearby ski areas! The house had everything we needed, the furniture and beds were all comfortable, and the historic character of the house is quite charming. Hoping we can come back next year for a longer stay!
Mostly I appreciated the communications from the host, James. Questions were promptly and thoroughly answered and he provided good info as we navigated an incoming snowstorm!
Adorable and cozy spot where we felt both far away and close to everything in the Canaan Valley. We had a great time, and the host was incredibly welcoming and responsive. Will definitely be back!
Very old building (I believe we read that it was constructed in 1856) with character. Nicely remodeled/ updated interior. We had everything we needed. We enjoyed the fire pit and the sound of the creek, as well as the proximity to state parks. Good communication from owner. Would recommend.
We loved the location of the old post office. The beds were comfortable. The kitchen had everything we needed for cooking and baking needs. It was a very unique property and we would love to visit again.
We had a wonderful time at this mountain house. The setting was so peaceful, and the sound of the running water in the backyard stream was soothing. We greatly appreciated that pets were welcome. We would definitely stay here again!
This was a nice spot for our little group, very comfortable, cozy and kid-friendly. It was equipped with everything we needed for our two-night stay. The location was gorgeous and very convenient to Canaan Valley and Timberline ski resorts.

We're glad our house was a good fit for you and your family. Thanks for staying with us!
Went to the area for sledding at Blackwater State Parking. Our host was fantastic in communication and recommendation of places to eat and see. Property is cozy and eclectic. Had great time and highly recommend.
I am so glad we chose this spot for our family's sledding trip. Our host was so friendly and proactive with communication about the nearby attractions- even helping prompt us to buy our sledding tickets early! The house was perfect for our group- spacious, well equipped, and beautiful. We can't wait to come back!

Thanks Erin!
We learned the hard way about booking sledding tickets ahead of time! We're glad you had a good stay at our house and would welcome you back anytime!
We went for a short ski weekend in the area. We had a blast! The house was perfectly located for everything that we wanted to do. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and the couch was super cozy for cuddling at the end of the day. Would love to come back when it's warm for some summer activities!

We're glad you enjoyed your ski weekend, and we'd love to host you again anytime.
Thanks!
I stayed at this home for three months during a travel contract and it was the absolute most perfect place for my dog and I. We were far enough away from the bustling of town, but within 15 minutes from multiple resorts and 25 minutes away from town making it the perfect stay for us. The views around the property itself were beautiful, hikes within minutes at Canaan valley, and a beautiful covered porch for quiet nights of reading. Jake, the property manager was so kind throughout my entire stay, and remained available via phone for anything I needed during my time there. I will definitely returning again to visit in this place that felt so much like my own home.
This place was exactly what we needed and a lot more. It’s a perfect distance from Canaan Valley ski resort. We had a family of 6 and everyone had their own space and the kitchen was huge for our family meals. Also really nice appliances in the kitchen. Huge bathroom downstairs with shower/tub and dual sinks. Powder room for upstairs nighttime trips to the bathroom! We will book here again!!
We had to cut our trip short due to a snow/wind storm. Due to the location far from a main road, I was worried that if trees came down or power got cut it would be an issue so left early. The house was very clean and well stocked and having a large bathroom downstairs was great. Some of the floors definitely creak.
Unfortunately we could not complete our stay at the property. We had car trouble on the way out and with the prediction of a lot of snow we decided not to risk it. However, the host, James, was so helpful in letting us know how the property is taken care of during big snow storms. We felt very comfortable knowing we would be taken care of while enjoying the winter wonderland of West Virginia. We hope to plan another trip out to see this cute property very soon!

Disliked: Cleanliness, check-in
The bad the bad and the smelly
Upon arrival I noticed the front storm door handle broken plus no chain to keep it from staying open, the door lock code was incorrect and had to be reset no biggie but noted. When I entered the house there was a pretty intense odor. We tried to air out the house and it was a little better after a day.
On Wednesday the heater kicked on and the odor was very noticeable, we sniffed around to find mouse skat all under the tv on the floor then sniffed the basket with a blanket in it. It was putrid, The blanket full of skat and urine. We swept up a large pile of mouse skat that was on the floor. The basket and blanket was left outside as it was just disgusting. The smell never really went away in the house and every time the heater would kick on it was right back. This house was the worst Vrbo I have stayed at. If my wife were with me we would have not stayed there.
For the price they are charging I expected the house to be perfect. Rustic but perfect.
The host replied about 24 hours later only after I sent another message.
The reply was slightly slightly disturbing. Dead mice were found in the duct work. Please note, we did not contact the host immediately as we probably should have and hindsight, you get it. No cell service, a busy schedule and just being a few dumb older guys played part in that, just an excuse but in no way would I expect to have dead animals in the duct work. We could deal with a little skat. We are getting back $500 out of nearly $2100. Out of space……….

Adrian stayed for a week without any communication, and when he started giving feedback after checkout about an odor I refunded a quarter of his stay before our cleaners got there (within hours of knowing the problem), and speculated as a probable cause ("maybe a mouse got into the ductwork?"). Adrian provided no evidence and didn't let us know in a timely fashion. Our cleaners couldn't confirm a smell and went through the place in detail. If he'd walked out when he found the "problem" instead of staying for a week we'd have gladly refunded his entire stay.
We enjoyed our stay. The house is cute with a spacious kitchen and downstairs bathroom. Hot water for everyone. The house was clean except for a few, minor things. The one surprise (which was not apparent by the picture) is that the house is very close to a road. It's NOT a main road but there is some traffic so it is loud when people drive by. You hear the traffic in the master bedroom and family room.

About the host
Hosted by Jake Mello
Hi, I'm Jake. My wife and I love traveling and camping, which led us to falling in love with this area. We want to provide a wonderful, comfortable base camp or remote work getaway for others to come enjoy our little slice of the great outdoors.
Why they chose this property
We've always loved coming to the WV Highlands, especially Dolly Sods, and have camped all over the area. When we had the opportunity to buy a place, we knew where we'd look! We absolutely fell in love with the location and some of the interesting quirks of the old post office (we're still working on verifying when exactly it was used as that!) and were lucky enough to be able to purchase it from the owner of the one-of-a-kind cross-country ski area, White Grass. We've loved getting to know the neighbors and reading up about the history of the area. If you're curious, we've left a copy of the local history books in the office.
What makes this property unique
This house is ideally set up for three couples, two small families, or a large/extended family. It has great winter access with a mostly flat driveway leading to a plowed school bus route. 4WD is not necessary to come have a great winter experience! In the summer, the cool air flows down the hill to the creek, perfect for summer evenings around the fire pit. Our boys love exploring Big Run, and the sound of the water flowing in the channel is very relaxing on the back porch. We keep adding things that we
