About this property
Quiet rural Maine cabin near Bigelow Preserve, Flagstaff Lake and Sugarloaf
Highland Hideaway
This quiet, rural retreat is off the beaten path in the Western Maine Woods. One of the few cabins that stay open during the winter months. This little cabin is heated and offers a place to cook and sleep for a maximum of 4 guests. Wake up to the sounds of the surrounding streams and forest while enjoying your morning beverage. Come back at the end of your day’s adventures to a warm fire, starry night skies and the peaceful sounds of nature around you.
Popular things to do here: snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, cross-country skiing, hiking, leaf peeping, mountain/fat biking, bird watching, kayaking, fishing, ice fishing and hunting.
The road runs parallel to scenic Routes 201 (Old Canada Road), and Route 27 (Carrabassett Valley, Sugarloaf Mountain and the West side of Flagstaff Lake). Our road is paved, plowed as necessary and open during the winter months. We are a short distance from East side of Bigelow Preserve, Appalachia Trail, Flagstaff Hut and the East side of Flagstaff Lake. It is a 12-mile drive to the Flagstaff Trailhead. Most of the unpaved roads in the area are only accessible by snowmobile during the winter months. For those familiar with the area, Carriage Road is no longer accessible.
Skiers: the Sugarloaf slopes are a scenic 45-minute drive from this location.
Snowmobilers: There are snowmobile trails nearby, and trail access on this road, but you will have to check with the local snowmobile clubs for trail access, locations and conditions.
The Hideaway stands alone, off the deck, at the back of our property, with its own yard, campfire ring and driveway with ample parking for your toys. The outdoor grilling and cooking area includes a gas grill, 4 burner gas cook top, large toaster oven, and a large patio cooler. The deck is covered by a metal roof, making cooking outdoors doable in almost all weather conditions. The picnic table is just off the deck. The kitchenette inside has a refrigerator, Keurig and 4 cup coffee makers, microwave, crockpot, toaster oven, dishes, beverage ware, utensils, cooking tools, etc. Bring your food & beverages. We provide bed linens, blankets and towels. The adult size bunk sleeps two people lower bunk, one-person upper bunk, with another twin bunk across the room. There is a multiple device charging port for your devices, WIFI TV, DVD player, movies and an Echo Dot for tunes. The cabin is heated and has an electric fireplace for additional warmth and ambiance. There is a full bathroom with a shower. The “winterized” screen house has seating for 4 and is also a great place to keep gear out of the elements. We provide some firewood for the campfire as long as we have it and always appreciate when folks bring some Maine firewood with them. We do not offer laundry service, but there are laundromats in both nearby towns. We want you to be comfortable during your stay, so, we cannot stress enough: the cabin and the resources for it truly cannot accommodate more than 4 people. We beg you not to surprise us with a group larger than four.

About the host
Hosted by Lois and Paul

We are a couple of Mainers sharing the beauty of the area. We love living here, and we love sharing what the area has to offer. We also love cooking and from time to time may share some of the delicious creations from our kitchen, so don't be surprised if you smell fresh baked bread or maybe an apple pie. If we are making it, we are more than likely going to want to share it :) We want to thank you in advance for helping to support local business and a couple of retirees. Your interest is truly appreciated.
Why they chose this property
Most properties we see are for accommodating large groups and can be expansive & expensive for just a couple people. We offer a cozy, quiet retreat to get away to. We try to keep our rates as affordable as possible.
What makes this property unique
Great place to disconnect from the world and enjoy the peaceful outdoors. It is amazingly quiet here.
