Hosted by John & Carmen

Host profile image
We are a family with ties from Puerto Rico to the midwest. Carmen transitioned from PR to the states taking up a career in medicine. From Indiana I picked up a profession in medical IT after moving to Florida. I grew up in the deep country on a family homestead vs Carmen channeling the busy urban city life. Two boys and a dog later and we have our family group minus the rabbit, fish, turtles and other assorted creatures. We are a mix of culture and different environmental upbringing yet with similar core values. Repeatedly finding ourselves in the Appalachians in North Carolina to escape FL heat we began to think of the mountains as a second home. A good illustration of our blend is the annual Christmas tree saga. We are that family who drives over a thousand miles to bring back a fresh Christmas tree each year from North Carolina. Yes, I grew up planting and cutting my own trees on property and brushing the snow off before bringing them inside so replacing the experience with any but the real thing along with the experience is just not acceptable. That would be us with the fir tree crossing back into Florida every November. Carmen directs the decorating as my style skills were declared dated for the modern tree. The experience together is everything and the trek and annual decorating builds cherished memories each and every year.

Why they chose this property

While seeking ways to escape our lack of seasons in FL we often take seasonal liberties around the country. Rarely have we found ourselves in hotel stays, opting for ample space and freedom to relax in short term rentals. We have encountered rentals of all standards including those we had to walk away from upon arrival. That said we always identified with properties we felt were “in it to win it”. With family now in Murphy we found ourselves checking in on family regularly. Purchasing the cabin as a base of operations when checking in with family we found the quiet niche of Murphy to be a location between all things in the tri state area. For us frequency of checking in on family became a home away from home and spawned the desire to share the area with others. Past experience in many rentals provided us with a clear directive. If we were to take on rentals, we desired this to be a reflection of us and our combined style. Although different, we felt we could bring something different to the market in the area. Further we want others to enjoy a pleasant stay and find the mountains of North Carolina a refreshing calling as we have. To that end we must deliver on a consistent product to facilitate a peaceful and enjoyable stay. With local family watching over the property and ensuring product consistency we felt we had an opportunity we may not have in other locations. Further our frequent visits we felt would allow us to frequently assess the property as a renter ourselves between guests. If a guest has a problem, then the problem quickly becomes our problem as we would expect no less than our guests on our frequent stays.

What makes this property unique

Our medical and IT backgrounds provide two areas we are both very adamant about. Cleanliness is a huge must and we have high expectations. That includes the way things are maintained including thought put into the cabin build itself. With our schedules both requiring on call and remote access the cabin had to maintain quality connectivity. Fiber Optic internet provided us a unique opportunity and played a significant role in the final location. The cabin itself is wired for security with smart technology and ample lighting outside and inside. Extra exterior and interior lighting was applied to the build from the start. Part of that technology not only helps guests feel safe with ease of entry or exit in the dead of night but allows us to monitor systems within the cabin for points of failure hopefully before there are major problems.
