Springhouse Cottage at 200-Acre Shenandoah River Retreat•Mountain & River Views
Welcome to the Springhouse Cottage at the 200-Acre Shenandoah River Retreat.
Wake up to peaceful valley views, soft morning light over the fields, and a quiet stretch of the Shenandoah River to explore. Charming small towns like Woodstock and Strasburg are just 10 minutes away, offering restaurants, cafés, local shops, and everyday conveniences.
This retreat includes two separate homes on the same 200-acre property — the Farmhouse and the Springhouse Cottage. The cottage can be rented on its own for a relaxing getaway or together with the Farmhouse for larger gatherings. While the homes are located near each other, mature trees and landscaping help each home feel connected to the larger landscape. Guests enjoy shared access to the riverfront, pavilion, trails, and open land throughout the property.
As a working Shenandoah Valley farm, the property offers plenty of room to explore, from open fields and mountain views to a mile of scenic river frontage. During your stay, you may occasionally see property owners, farm staff, or guests from the Farmhouse enjoying the shared outdoor spaces and riverfront amenities.

The outdoor deck overlooks the meadow and mountain range, offering a peaceful place for morning coffee, birdwatching, or quiet evenings with sweeping views. Morning light filters across the grass, and the valley begins its calm, steady rhythm.

Here, you can: • Relax in hammocks as the river drifts by • Share meals under the covered pavilion • Wade into clear, shallow water • Launch kayaks & tubes directly from the shoreline • Gather around the riverside firepit at sunset (firewood provided) • Fish for smallmouth bass, sunfish & fallfish • Watch sunset colors reflect across the water
In the evenings, the firepit near the river becomes a peaceful gathering place — where the warmth of the flames and the sounds of the water create a memorable experience.
200 ACRES TO EXPLORE From open fields to forest edges, the property offers space to wander and take in the surroundings.
Wildlife is abundant, and guests often spot: • Deer in the early morning light • Bald eagles circling above the river • Osprey diving for fish • Great blue herons gliding low across the water • Ducks paddling through the quiet bends • Songbirds filling the valley with sound
And if you're lucky, you may even spot river otters frolicking in the gentle eddies — a special and memorable sight.

Very quiet and peaceful. Walked down to the river and to the picnic area but sadly didn't have tim.
What a nice place. Once we found our way in, which was not difficult, we knew what things to watch for each day as we left and came back. We knew where the deer came to eat and slowed down and opened our windows to get the full effect of the country air. Didn't have time to enjoy the river, but the cabin is so cozy and the fireplace is so historically beautiful. Thumbs up.

Little piece of paradise
Perfect little house for two people to get away from all the hustle and bustle. 2 hours scenic drive from DC, next to the Shenandoah River North Fork. If your idea of excitement is to see a couple of deer and a buzzard over the weekend, this is your place. Relaxation pure. Wineries and a great brewery pub close by. Our favorites are North Mountain, Muse and Woodstock Brewery. And there is a fantastic butcher close by for all those meat lovers. Owner Kathleen and housekeeper Penny are very responsive and helpful. This was our second time here and we are coming back.

Perfect weekend get away
This is a cute little cottage just 200 yards from the Shenandoah river, with views from the deck, which will make you take a deep breath and start relaxing right away. Perfect for one or two couples (sharing one bathroom) or a family with kids who don't mind sharing the sleeper sofa downstairs. We stayed one night together with another couple and it worked well. We will bring the kids next time. The house is equipped with all the basic necessities. The owners are very friendly and attentive.
Situated right next to a working farm, with horses, close the river, with canoes and kayaks to use, a hammock next to the river. You don't actually have to leave the place during a weekend stay. But if you do, Woodstock (8 miles away) is a quaint little town with a nice brewery (Woodstock Brew House), a cafe, a steak house and some cute little stores downtown (plus a Walmart, Food Lion, CVS and fast food places a little out of town towards the highway). There are many nice wineries close by: we went to see and taste Wolf Gap and North Mountain. Both are lovely. Don't miss Crabill's Meets, a family run butcher, 1 mile up the road from the house: they have the best steaks we have had in a very long time. We will be back!

Restful farm setting with amazing views of the country
My husband and I were very impressed with our stay here. The cabin was exceptionally clean and well-kept. We had to run out and get more garbage bags, but other than that, it was well-stocked. We had free range of the entire farmland, including the beautiful river that runs through the property. The nearby towns are fun to tour and explore. Definitely recommend.

Location was perfect for views and privacy but a little more ran down then pics on web.
No downstairs bathroom can be an inconvenience for some. Basement door was open with light on when we arrived. Coffee maker was not cleaned from last stay and had mold growing in it. Even though, I would still stay again as the overall relaxation was much needed and the charm was definitely there.

Nice house. Beautiful scenery.
The house is old and charming. Perfect size for 2 people. The only thing missing is a dishwasher. The scenery is beautiful. A lot of wild life and a short walk to the river where you can go kayaking or just play in the water.

Not bad but not exactly what we were expecting.
The location was GREAT. Very scenic and somewhat remote but easy to get to many places of interest. There was another property just a few yards away, so not as private as we would have preferred. Even though we were told we could basically go anywhere on the property, with other families so close we were just not as comfortable roaming around. Didn't want to invade their privacy. This was not disclosed in the description of the property. The cottage was very clean but older. 7 foot ceilings gave it a snug feeling. Bath was small with a slanted ceiling over the toilet area which was awkward for my husband who is 6'1". I was not expecting to have to make a store run for toilet paper and paper towels during the week. Also, being asked to strip the bed and load the towels in the washer was bit over the top. This was our first time using VRBO and our first vacation in 6 years that didn't involve a camper or other family being taken care of. I work hard and was disappointed that I had to do more work even though there was a $75 cleaning fee added. I try and treat other people's property with respect and leave things as good or better than I found them. The owner, even though we never met, was very polite and quick to respond to any questions we had. Crossing the one lane, low water bridge was an adventure as well. Watching the deer and the scenic view was mostly worth it though.

Beautiful retreat on the Shenandoah River surrounded by mountains.
This is a lovely place, perfect for two, with all the amenities needed - situated on a farm flanked by mountains and river. It's a gorgeous property with horses, chickens and wildlife. The hosts are incredibly gracious and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. There is another farmhouse right next door that's also available for rent; would be a great retreat for a family or couples. I'm already looking forward to another visit.

Most beautiful! We loved being out in the middle of Gods beautiful country and having it all to love
The place was more than I imagined. I wish I could live like that everyday. We live in the country, but not like that. It was just myself, my husband and my 16 yr old nature loving daughter. We didn’t need a large place, just something cozy to enjoy when we weren’t traveling around. Kathleen was very sweet and I hope one Day we can go back. Planning a trip to Washington DC, but of course don’t want to stay there so this would be a great place for a day trip or even 2 to Washington. Just an FYI if you are coming down 81 don’t go by your gps or Mapquest. Go straight to the Toms Brook exit on 81!! It is a big difference in time and mileage. Found that out first day. Thank you Kathleen for lending us a beautiful piece of Heaven on earth! Angie, Bobby and Carmen Tyndall.

Wonderful again!
Our third stay at the Springhouse was just as enjoyable as our first two. It’s cozy, comfortable, and convenient to all the Shenandoah Valley has to offer. The views are so relaxing—and we were lucky enough to catch the end of this fall’s beautiful colors! Already looking forward to our next visit!

Wonderful getaway
Our family had a great experience it was very nice to have lines and towels provided for us it definitely was the most comfortable bed we have stayed in at a rental house. It was nice also to have a full kitchen. There is a big house right next door but that didn’t bother us at all there were numerous kayaks and 2 fire pits where you can put your kayak in was very nice I was able to stand in the water comfortabley with my toddler it was overall a great stay!

Relaxing, cute little house on river- amazing views!
We loved our stay! Swimming, cooking, using kayaks and canoes on the property, nearby hikes. Only downsides (and possibly upsides) were rural location far from grocery shopping, slow Wi-Fi and no DVD players. Responsive and attentive host.

It's great, if the hidden property 10ft away isn't also booked.
Let me begin by stating that the property is great, and the host is nice... however, the pictures here and posts are intentionally deceptive and misleading. There is a larger house cropped out of all the pictures just 10ft away, which wouldn't be much of an issue, except that is also for rent and all the outside amenities are shared, including the kayaks, pavilion and the single access point to the river. So if you wanted to get away from it all, and not have to share with anyone else, this is not the place for you. You can't even get in the river by yourself if the other rental is booked and they are already there. If you don't mind sharing your seclusion, then this is a nice place.
A few other tid-bits. There is only a single entrance to the place, which crosses a very scary low-lying concrete bridge with no sides. It's sturdy, but fairly creepy to cross. Also, the spring-house was clean overall, though there were little things like cobwebs everywhere.

Dear Guest,
We thank you for your review and are so happy you thought the property was great and that the host was kind. We apologize your expectation was not met in the other regards. We have mentioned to our cleaning staff the details you suggested.
To our prospective patrons, we invite you to look at the photos provided to view the accommodations and surroundings, or view the satellite imagery in the map section to see the full grounds and entryway. Also check out our Overview section which gives a description of the shared riverfront amenity, which we have always found to be a joyous and secluded experience considering the property's spaciousness.
We strive for our guests' experience, thank you again for your comments. We hope that you will return!
