The Space:
The private cellar entrance (separate from the main home) leads to the cozy bedroom space, freshly renovated with new bathroom, flooring, and custom cabinetry. Featuring luxury amenities like Nespresso coffeemaker, Brooklinen sheets and Sonos speaker, the space lends itself to couples getaways or solo traveler visits. A couch and small dining table allow for relaxed living, or head to your waterfront Adirondack chairs for quiet contemplation. The bathroom features Aesop soaps, toiletries and standing shower.

Guest Access:
Guests will have access to the private cellar unit and private waterfront seating area. Guests will be provided a dedicated parking spot for 1 vehicle in the driveway. Guests will not have access to back yard, porch or the remainder of the home beyond the downstairs unit. While guests will have private entry and self check-in, no parties, events or additional visitors to the property are allowed.

Getting Around:
We provide guests a dedicated parking spot in our driveway - or you may park in front of the home (not guaranteed). You are moments away from the heart of downtown Mystic.

Other Things to Note:
Please note the space only accommodates two adult guests. This is a basement unit with limited views from the interior. The shower has a maximum height clearance of ~6’ for drainage reasons (a likely inconvenience to taller guests). Please note the home adjacent to our property is under renovation and construction noise may be lightly audible on weekdays.

Interaction with Guests:
We provide guests self check-in and private entry to the home, as such you only see us if you need us!

Our visit
I am not sure how they took the outside pic but it did not appear as it did online, however it suited our needs. The red rug beside the bed had pieces of white dirt on it otherwise it was clean. It would have been nice to just have a couple more water bottles and nespresso pods. Thank you.

Mystic Gem
This property was perfect. Nice location in the center of town yet quiet and comfortable. The bedding is wonderful. Property manager was easy to communicate with and even provided a credit for noise from some neighboring construction without even requesting it or having complained about it. We would definitely return to this property.

Beautiful setting
Check in was a breeze. Communication was seamless. House fit our needs perfectly! The room was spotless and equipped with everything you could need. The location is super! We walked everywhere we wanted to go. Off street parking was a major plus! Highly recommend!

About the host

Host profile image
A former general manager and ops leader for large scale tech companies, I've focused my energies on growing a short term rental hospitality business. We believe in providing guests an experience that meets (or beats!) that of a hotel; offering you the conveniences and luxuries of a hotel with the privacy and unique character of a home.

Why they chose this property

The Captain Gates home was built in the early 19th century by Daniel D. Edgecomb, a carpenter who made coffins in his basement workshop. In 1847, the house was acquired by Captain Gurdon Gates, who added the intricately detailed porch. The oldest of four brothers, who all became sea captains, Gurdon Gateswas known for his record run in 1866 around the Horn in the clipper ship, Twilight. He also commanded other ships, including the steamship, Victor, during the Civil War. After his retirement from the sea, he was involved in business and politics, serving in the Connecticut Assembly. Gravel Street was known as “Captain’s Walk” because all of the homes there but one once belonged to sea captains.

The home was purchased in 2019 and underwent a significant two-year renovation. We are excited to bring new life into this beautiful home!

What makes this property unique

Our location simply can't be beat. We're in the heart of downtown Mystic - walking distance to acclaimed shops and restaurants (without the hassle of parking!) - and providing guests a beautiful outdoor seating area on the waterfront. Sit, relax and watch the boats pass by.
