About this property

Adorable Honeymoon Cottage by the Lake

This vintage summer cottage is across the road from the lake bluff, and offers a lovely view of the lake and is a quiet, rustic getaway for newlyweds or young families with one or 2 small children. This is not a good choice for folks who are "condo people"--in other words, it's small, old fashioned, and not for everyone.

The deck provides a place to grill your dinner as you sip a cool chardonnay from the nearby winery as you watch your children playing on the swingset. The small but serviceable kitchen has everything one would need, including coffeemaker and microwave, pie plate and rolling pin!

The DOUBLE bed is brand new in 2022, the hide-a-bed has a blow up mattress, and linens are provided. The beach access is just a short walk away. (one quarter mile) and features a creek which will delight the little ones. Unfortunately in 2021 the beach was very rocky, but it changes all the time, so we’ll see what 2022 brings. Other local beaches are open, and have been listed among the best beaches in the world!. Check out the county park about five minutes north, the Casco preserve, which is about 5 miles south. South Haven and Saugatuck both have impressive beaches as well. Glenn is situated between South Haven and Saugatuck, making it ideal for swimming, shopping excursions, wine tasting, brewery hopping, or for renting a boat or wave-runner. Great restaurants are within 10-15 minutes in 3 directions. This is a cottage for those who want to get away from it all, but want to be within reach of all the action. There is a convenience store in town that has an amazing selection of wine and spirits, snacks, pizza, and the New York Times.

On a rainy day, we provide puzzels, toys and games and a collection of old Disney VHSs that can be played on our small TV. There's a movie theater in South Haven with the lowest prices imaginable that plays movies popular with children and adults.

Check out our history: The Kerr family has been vacationing on Fabun Road since the early 1900's when my great grandmother, Henrietta, came from Chicago to spend summers here, playing organ for the local girl's camp. She subsequently bought the property next door to the camp. To get here every summer, she had to take a boat across the big Lake, land in South Haven, where she would get on a horse drawn hay wagon with her trunk full of her summer clothes, and once she got to the cottage, she stayed for the whole summer. Her house still stands at 1286 Fabun Road. My father spent summers here as a boy, and so did I. We didn't have a phone in the old days, or a TV, or even running water! We played Monopoly or Sorry, and card games, and built fires on the beach. When we kids would get bored, my mom would just send us out for a walk in the woods. It helped me learn how to enjoy my own company, and be creative. I think every child should spend summers on Fabun Road!

Overall we had a good visit. The location of the property was great and close to everything we wanted to do. The street was very quiet and peaceful with a beautiful view of the lake. When we first checked in, there were many spiders, a wasp, and other bugs that we had to take care of, but we didn’t have too many after that. We were however nervous of more bugs getting in since the seals on the windows and doors weren’t great. The amenities didn’t seem to quite match what was actually available (no shampoo, box tv didn’t work, heat was only from little space heater that took a long time to kick in). There are definitely many simple upgrades that could help elevate the experience of this property, but it was okay for a shorter trip. The location and close access to the beach was the best part for us.

Cozy

Cozy cabin in a nice region of Michigan, away from major cities but not too rural. Cabin was overall very clean, but there were a few spider cohabitors and many spiderwebs in various corners of the house. Nice if you are looking to getaway from the city.

Fun little cabin near the lake

The cabin was as suspected from the information on the listing. We loved to older vibe and how quiet the area was. Being by the lake gave gorgeous views and the primitive beach down the road was fun to take our chairs down to and relax. WIFI did not work the entire time so it wouldn’t be a good stay for young kids that are attached to devices. Take plenty of bottled water because the water is rusty. All in all it’s a great place to unwind and is very close to so many fun attractions. It’s an easy drive to South Haven, Saugatuck/Douglas, and Holland.

It was like walking back in time. 😊 No complaints on the cabin or surrounding area (great for walking). Our only challenge was the inability to reach family due to extremely poor cell phone coverage. Obviously, the owner has no control over this. Visitors just need to be prepared for this challenge.

Quaint and cozy

From the moment I turned onto the road to the cottage, and had the view of Lake Michigan to my right, I knew I was going to love it here. This is a quintessential lake cottage, off a quiet road, with a lovely view of the lake. Sitting on the porch, watching the sun set, with a cool breeze coming off the lake was great. When I wasn't out exploring, you could find me on the porch. The cottage itself was clean and well appointed, with everything needed for a comfortable stay. I certainly plan on going back!

Amazing Cottage, Searched for Different Beach

The cottage was perfect and cozy with tasteful grandma vibes. Very clean, which was most important. The beach is not a horrible trek through the woods like other reviewers said. You walk 10 minutes back the way you drove into the neighborhood. There is a BEACH sign by a guard rail at the beginning of that dirt road with wooden stair steps down. Charming and quiet neighborhood. We did not like the beach personally. We found it too small and rocky. There were slabs of concrete with rusted metal bits piled with tires on the edge. Maybe a lanfill project? We took some rusted metal pipes out of the water so kids wouldnt step. We watched a pretty sunset here and the rocks were fun to hunt. We ended up driving more thane xpected in search of a beach, but were so happy to come back to spend the evwning in our cottage. The host did really well. Jad an internet issue but i think maybe it was only me and my boyfriends phone because other reviews dont complain about that. Couldnt get to my vrbo chat to communictae because of it. But all went well. We found North Beach in South Haven (25 min drive), which was very separated with fences to keep private beaches from public. The public beach sections were laughably small. There was an amazing boardwalk with all sorts of shops along the Black River near this beach though! We settled on Oval Beach in Saugatuck, which was expansive and beautiful. The parking here was 15 bucks. There was a cute area here named Douglas with shops. We had fun!

This Was a Mistake

We are travelers and rely on VRBO descriptions. It didn't work this time. There is vintage and then there is old. This was old. We debated as to whether to comment on this rental but decided that it might encourage the owner to make a few updates. I have only complained one other time in the many years we have used VRBO but there needs to be some attention to a variety of things on this rental. There was one wash cloth and a few older towels. The bathroom sink was not appealing at all...but the shower was nice. Faucets were leaking in the sinks. The kitchen stove burners really needed attention and I agree with another person who responded...a good yard sale visit would provide a much more complete line of dinner wear...cracked and stained is not appealing. Silverware needs to be in a drawer, not just sitting out. Good refrigerator but the rest...well, not as good. There is one mirror in the bathroom and that is all ! I would love to spend $500 on a Walmart trip and get some curtains, window shades, new waste containers, some towels, etc. This could be a cute place but there is just wear and tear from many years of being lived in. We did smile (someitmes) at the lack of internet service and the TV. I haven't seen a TV like that for many years. We don't need all that stuff but some people might like it. The description didn't quite 'describe' this property. A honeymoon cottage it is not. The lake was beautiful but not accessible - difficult path.

This little hidden gem was perfect for my husband and I. Keep in mind it is an old school, semi-rustic cabin with the necessities to make the stay more than comfortable. (We are all about the older, historic feel of places) But the surrounding outdoors…INCREDIBLE!!! We had the views and sounds of Lake Michigan from the porch and living room, deer in the yard, almost ZERO TRAFFIC down the road. Just so quiet and peaceful and wonderful. We enjoyed so much that we booked our Spring trip for there while sitting on the porch. Anyway it is my new favorite spot. Thank you again to the host for offering this peaceful slice of heaven in a very busy world.

This tiny cottage is cute and comfortable. The owner’s description is accurate. The internet works fine, but this cottage is just the spot to take a break from the digital world. It was the peaceful getaway we were looking for. This would also be a great place to stay for a solo retreat to write or do watercolor!

My hubby and I traveled from Chicago for a brief getaway. A little over two hours away from our home in Bronzeville, the cottage was easy to get to and we immediately felt “away.” From the cottage’s porch, we could see Lake Michigan. There is a beach a very short walk away. Check in was easy and the kitchen is well-equipped! There is air conditioning, but we opted to keep the windows open overnight to enjoy the cooling breezes and the cacophony of tree frogs and other night time creatures. Just what we needed and we’ll be back!

Check in and check out went smoothly, although there was conflicting information in the guest book & VRBO listing. Love the vintage feel of the cottage and the proximity of beaches to visit. There are some minor maintenance items that need to be addressed (kitchen faucet leak, kitchen light, loose wall switches, screen coming apart) but they did not detract from our stay.

Longtime Glenn summer resident, I decided to live here year round. The lake is the big draw--swimming in the summer, beach wlaks in the fall and spring, and big ice on the big lake in the winter. I love it here!

Why they chose this property

My folks bought this property as a place to put extra guests in the summer. As they got a little older, they wanted to downsize, but I couldn't bear the though of selling the property to anyone else, so I bought it!

What makes this property unique

This little adorable cottage is perfect for young families. It's cozy and affordable and provides a peaceful setting where kids (and parents) can get away from the constant din of electronic media. A wonderful opportunity to teach children about the joys of entertaining yourself.
