Relaxation Station on Grassy Mountain - Open April though October
Nestled off a private loop on Grassy Mountain near Little Switzerland, a rental cabin awaits you. 'R' Place is a family-owned 3-bedroom cabin named for the Matriarch (Ruby) who envisioned a place of Relaxation, Rest, Rejuvenation, and Refreshing activities. The double-decked structure offers a view of Mt. Mitchell and sometimes a bear and her cubs. It is the perfect place to enjoy a family dinner and a movie or to plan the next day's adventure. Relax in the large Jacuzzi tub and refresh yourself with a good night's sleep in one of the Sleep Number beds.
The cabin is unique with the wood for the interior taken through the whole process by builder/owner Dan. Decorated with a mix of antiques and comfortable new furniture 'R' Place lends itself to be your vacation haven.

We loved this beautiful mountain home. It was very clean and comfortable and had a beautiful views. There was lots of space and much to do. There were several televisions and lots of books and games. We really enjoyed the pool table. It was a great place to be with family.
The property was as wonderful as the description! Everything was clean and well- cared for. The road up to the house was a bit of an adventure, but that just added to the fun. We will definitely be going again!
Awesome cabin; however for the older crowd maybe a hand rail for steps. Cabin was great and offered lots to do just at cabin from playing pool, reading books to enjoying a family movie. Will definitely stay again.
The cabin is quaint yet very spacious for larger groups. Mornings with the sunrise on the Black Mountains, and then sunsets sinking behind the mountains is breathtaking. There is plenty of activities locally to enjoy. With Ashville a short drive away the possibilities are endless. This is a great place to getaway and just relax for awhile. We'll definitely be coming back.
We absolutely loved this cabin. There was plenty of space, lots of books and games, and the location was exactly what we wanted. The views were amazing. We hope to travel back and take our kids there next time. This could be a tricky area in the winter if there is snow so keep that in mind. The whole cabin had such an amazing honey feeling. This would be a great experience for anyone looking in the area.
Beautiful cabin tucked away in sweet Little Switzerland! Great neighborhood and close to the Blue Ridge Parkway! House had everything we needed, great views, comfy beds, stocked kitchen and the jetted tub was amazing! Will always try and stay here on our visits to NC, wonderful place, thank you!
I loved the cabin layout. It is great for family or friends. Plenty of room and privacy for all.
Beautiful view of the Mountain. Would definitely come back.
While we used this rental functionally - to house a disc golf team during a competition - the location and ambience make for an unbelievable stay. It is beautiful, relaxing, and met our every need including cost effectiveness. Highly recommended for whatever your vacation might require.
Wonderful experience at this little slice of heaven. Lois was very helpful and easily reachable. The cabin far exceeded our expectations with every possible comfort. It's in a wonderful location if you’re looking to disconnect. Also close to endless hiking and outdoor activities we very much enjoyed. We will definitely be back 🙏❤️
I’m very impressed with the cleanliness and appearance of the property. We were pleasantly surprised with the sleep number bed! Pool and foosball tables are a nice touch! Can’t say enough about the host. Wonderful communication as well as being very kind. You will not regret booking this cabin.
We enjoyed celebrating our anniversary at this charming, rustic cabin. The views were spectacular! The only downside was the long (1 mile +) one-lane dirt road that was rather difficult driving up the mountain in a sedan.
Very special location and views. Mount Mitchell to the far left. Thoughtful features including night lights and plenty of hot water (2 hot water heaters in basement). The narrow, gravel road was a challenge for my city sedan, but I suppose that comes with a private, high-country site.
This place exceeded our expectations, very clean, had all the supplies we needed and a great view of Mt. Mitchell. This place could definitely sleep 8-10 people. The game room in the basement was like a little apartment with a kitchen and pool table. Fireplace a grill worked great. Beds and furniture were in good shape and comfortable. I would recommend this to a friend or family.
This was a perfect place for family bonding time. Just far enough away to be alone and close to everything. We enjoyed the atmosphere immensely.
We were able to cook together in the nice kitchen and use the grill to keep food costs down. The dining table was huge and we did a puzzle on it and ate outside on the deck though. Super cozy.
All of the floors were well appointed and instructions were clear about everything. So many sleeping options helped make it easy for us to decide where everyone went, but honestly they were all good options.
The basement was fun. The games were great! Not sure why anyone would watch much TV there, but we did snuggle up and watch a movie one night.
I’ve seen some people say that the road is tough, but if you keep your car in low gear and obey the 8 mph speed limit, it’s a piece of cake. Cant speak for the winter, but snow is always crazy to drive on in the mountains.
My husband and I were looking for the natural beauty of the NC mountains, but with solitude away from other houses and traffic, etc. We got that and so much more! The house is wonderful! The view off the back porches is breathtaking. We could really tell that the owners had tried to prepare for their visitors. They had many "little" extras, like coffee filters, salt and pepper, extra blankets, a toaster. My husband loved the pool table in the basement! The one lane gravel road in is not for the faint of heart. My husband is used to this sort of road, so it is not a problem for us, but do be prepared, probably with an all-wheel, 4-wheel, etc. vehicle. We fell in love with this home and hope to come back to visit again, maybe bringing our family next time! Thanks for a wonderful visit!
The property itself would have been very accommodating. We however arrived on motorcycles and the drive which is about a mile and a quarter long to get to the property was not motorcycle friendly as described before we rented. We could hardly get to the property once we did, we were stranded there until morning. The owner was very accommodatin, she let us stay one night which we paid for along with the cleaning fees and we're still working with VRBO to get our taxes that were charged in full to us. Of course we were penalized for leaving early but we could never have made it out of the driveway and back everyday twice a day to do our motorcycle rides around the areas. If you have a four-wheel drive you could possibly manage the drive way. Unfortunately we were not able to manage on the 1.5 mile drive to get there due to the road being washed out and replaced with big heavy stones, too thick for the motorcycle to be able to maneuver safely.. Otherwise the property would have been nice for a group to vacation..
House was very clean and comfortable. The area is amazing with the mountains and switchback roads. This house is all about relaxing ! Communication with host was excellent
Very nice cabin, clean and spacious! The road to cabin was gravel and only one car at a time. We had no trouble but prayed often that we wouldn't meet another car! We loved our stay!

About the host
Hosted by Lois Carter
This house is owned by Dan and sister Lois. We fell in love with Little Switzerland while traveling the Blue Ridge Parkway. We bought the property 20 years ago and finished this house in 2010. We harvested trees from the site and the family farm in West Virginia to make flooring and poplar paneling and cabinets. Both of us are retired teachers and enjoy our time in the mountains with our families.
