Winter Travel Notes Winter stays are cozy, peaceful, and a wonderful way to experience the mountains.
After a day outdoors, the fireplace offers warmth and charm, making the cabin feel like a true retreat.
Snow in this area usually melts quickly, but during active storms, travel can be more challenging. For the safest experience, 4WD or AWD is recommended. Roads are plowed once about 4 inches of snow have accumulated, but the driveway and cabin stairs are not regularly cleared.
Shovels are available at the base of the stairs if needed.
If a major snowfall is expected, I’m happy to work with you to reschedule if necessary — your comfort and safety always come first

We really enjoyed our stay at this vacation rental. The home was clean and well equipped for our family of four. The location allowed us to conveniently visit RMNP, Estes Park, and Lyons, while being able to enjoy quiet and solitude in the evening when returning to the house. We had excellent communication with the owner, who responded promptly to question and provided helpful information for our stay. We would definitely stay here again.
We had a great trip and really enjoyed this vacation rental. This is part of a small private community hidden in the mountains. We would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a remote location in the Rockies that is also very modern, clean, with all the conveniences of home. Beautiful view from the deck. Cory was a wonderful host and checked in with us a couple times to make sure everything was okay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Elk Meadow. It was peaceful and quiet and the place is quite nice. We enjoyed sitting out on the porch to watch the sunset. I must say that I appreciate the fact that they have an a/c available. We only needed it one night but appreciate that it was available. The drive into Estes Park is beautiful and easy to make. The drive into the meadow from the main road is also a nice ride. We would definitely stay here, again.
From our first contact with Cory, everything was outstanding. He made the entire process completely simple and stress free. Cory was so helpful and kind, and his email check ins were appreciated! The cabin was well stocked, super clean and we absolutely loved the peaceful location. It was so quiet! Our vacation was everything we hoped it would be, and a lot of that was due to Cory’s care he puts into his cabin and guests. Thank you again, Cory! We can’t wait to return!

About the host
Hosted by Cory Jakobsen
We live in Longmont, which is about 40 minutes away from Big Elk Meadows. We bought the property in May/June of 2022 and have been working to create a relaxing getaway ever since!
Just started hosting in December of 2023. Really enjoyed helping our guests out with their trip to Colorado! Hoping to be able to do the same for future guests!
Why they chose this property
The place was unforgettable when we first saw it. When you turn off Route 36, you drive down route 47, which is beautiful. When the pavement ends (turn right), you drive up a mountain (and see some incredible views, including some of Long's Peak & Mount Meeker) and back down into the community. On our first trip in, we saw some people fishing, had to drive through the water that was flowing between 2 lakes (which was only a few inches deep, but a cool experience) and we saw a handful of elk in the meadows shortly before arriving at the place!
Since then it's only gotten better! During all of the time we've spent working on the place, we've seen up to 45 elk in the meadows, right in front of the house. We've also seen moose on a few occasions, a couple bears, quite a few turkeys, 1 mountain goat, a few bobcats (recently - Jan 2024), bald eagles, and mountain lion prints in the snow.
We saw it, had the idea for a short term rental so others could enjoy the place too! Hope you enjoy it as much as we do!
What makes this property unique
You're 5 miles off route 36, but it seems much further! Roughly four miles of the road is paved, then the last mile or so is unpaved, going up a mountain and down into the community. From the top of the mountain on a clear day, you'll see Long's Peak (one of the 14ers) and Mount Meeker (13,916').
Big Elk Meadows has a relaxing atmosphere, friendly people and good fishing!
I like that I can walk out the front door and walk to the lakes to go fishing or you can hike up the mountain right behind the house!
