Winterthur, Nemours, Mt. Cuba Center and The Laurels are other natural wonders close by, along with the Brandywine Museum, historic Chadds Ford and the Brandywine Battlefield. The borough of Kennett Square is down the road, 1.5 miles, with art galleries, boutiques, gift shops, a brand new library with a special floor just for kids, and restaurants of every cuisine to enjoy. Runners love the 5K and 10K Kennett Run in May, September brings the annual Mushroom Festival, October has the October Brewfest. The magic of the holiday season is in magnificent display at Longwood Gardens and Winterthur.
The restored mill is your home away from home with its rustic and unique furnishings and original structural elements. The main living room is an open floor plan with a 12 foot, 260 year-old carved wood dining room table, lots of cozy sitting areas, a functioning fireplace, Steinway piano, six string guitar, conga, percussion instruments, books, board games and more. There is a powder room off to the side of the living room.
**Please remember to use coasters for all glasses/mugs on the wood surfaces, plenty are available!**
The renovated kitchen is fully stocked and provides All Clad and Le Creuset cookware for preparing culinary delights. A breakfast table area looks out over the neighboring fields and a large picture window is a lovely place to sit with your morning coffee or tea and appreciate the sights and sounds of the waterfall and watch the wind sculpture turning even in the slightest breeze. (There are 3 of different sizes on the property.)
As it was a mill circa 1700 and built into the side of the small hill, the 3 private bedrooms are "downstairs" from the living/dining room space via a wide, split staircase with handrails and a landing, 7 stairs each. (Although when you look out the window facing the front of the house, it looks like you are on the 2nd floor!). Full beds in 2 and 1 with a pair of twin beds, towels in each bedroom. The private bedroom level has a double vanity bathroom, soaking tub, rain shower and handheld shower with antique Spanish tile. Large bath towels, soap, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, skincare provided. Above the main floor is the loft with 3 additional twin beds, towels provided (no bath in the loft).
Teak furniture outside is perfect for reading a book or for simply enjoying the view of the marsh and woods. One of the two decks has a teak table and chairs, perfect for dining al fresco.
There is a wide path alongside the pond, now evolved into a wetland that continues into the woods for wandering and reconnecting with nature. The gardens close by the house provide a bounty of colors from spring to fall and welcome both pollinators and people.
There is parking for up to 8 cars depending on their size in the large driveway right beside the waterfall. When you arrive you'll come up the stairs detailed with gears from the old mill up to the back deck, take in the marsh, a home to ducks, geese, egrets, songbirds, snapping turtles (the mill pond has filled in over the past few years, so the canoes do not get used anymore), and then come in through the sliding doors.
Guests have access and use to all the areas in the home, the dining, kitchen, great room, sitting areas, decks, grounds, the little library under the stairs, excepting the private suite of the owner and the office in the far end of the loft (not used when guests are in residence).
Other things to note: -- The Farmhouse has its own well water that is triple purified and tested regularly, and is very healthy! -- Kennett Township is recycles all that is allowed; there is a bin in the mudroom to collect it. -- Birthdays, anniversaries, and other small, intimate celebrations (up to 15 people) are made even more memorable in this one of a kind setting.
We have a friendly rescue cat and dog that live here with Barbara, the founder/owner and caretaker, in their private living space with its own outside entrance as well as inside, with both with locked doors. There is a curtain befreo the inside door to the side of the laundry area to denote the private space. We are never in the guest rooms and stay in the private area, although Anouk, the cat, loves to welcome guests when they arrive if she is about. Johnny Cash, the rescue dog, is rather introverted and keeps to himself. They welcome your dog to come visit.
Barbara is often out taking care of the gardens and woods or out in the community. With the marsh, waterfall with pool to oversee for safety as well as facilitating small retreats when guests are not here, she does live on site. She is discreetly available at any time for all needs or questions via text. Her goal is to give you your space, privately, to enjoy the retreat center fully.

This is a wonderful property and we truly enjoyed staying there. Looking forward to coming back closer to the holidays -- and enjoying the outdoor space/walking path even more. Barbara is a terrific host and the home offered a perfect respite for our family and dog making this place 100% puppy and people approved!
There is no better place to stay in the area. The retreat is gorgeous, spacious, and extraordinarily relaxing. Barbara is a consumate host. Absolutely extraordinary.
Another perfect stay that accommodated our three families with beautiful space for little ones to run around outside and explore a curated garden and trails along the pond. We will be back!
The facilities were so beautiful. So much history and such a majestic view of nature! Barbara is a fantastic host who went above and beyond to make our stay memorable.
Barbara’s place is a beautiful, historical property, so if you are looking for a place for a retreat, or because you are visiting the area, don’t pass this up. Her home is welcoming, as is she, each room has not only character, but such warmth as well. And Barbara is such an interesting woman with what she’s done in life. We were only there for a night due to a wedding we had in Wilmington, so didn’t have nearly enough time to enjoy the home as much as I would have liked! Thank you, Barbara for your hospitality!
The host and property exceeded all of our expectations. Barbara made us feel at home at the most restful, unique and beautiful property that we have ever stayed in.
This is a unique and magical spot. My friends and I absolutely loved it. Barbara is a lovely and fascinating woman who made special arrangements for us. She lives in a separate space at the property and when we ran into her we had some wonderful conversations, but she never interfered with our privacy. We left feeling revitalized and refreshed.
Beautiful property! We stayed there for a family wedding. Barbara was so accommodating. We had 8 people and were very comfortable. Pet friendly too. We highly recommend this beautiful old farmhouse.
The stay was in a magnificent converted mill house, which also doubles as a retreat center, as well as the primary home of the owner who lives downstairs in a curtained off section. Upstairs there is a large, clean kitchen, a huge dining area, sitting area, a bathroom, and the owner's home office. Downstairs there is a bathroom, a sitting area with a library, three bedrooms (one with AC - the other's with fans), the owner's washer and dryer, and the owner's curtained off section of the house. There is a cat and dog on premises who we didn't meet but may have heard around. It's a very cool old house, it has a lot of beautiful precious art, pictures and paintings of the owner on the walls, musicians, and the owner with the Dali Lama. The grounds of the house are brilliant, long wooded walking paths, a large bog, and a waterfall. It's close to Brandywine Museum and Longwood Gardens. The owner met us at Longwood Gardens and let us use her passes to get in, which saved us almost 100. The owner was very kind.

Hi Lindsey, thanks very much for your kind review. Happy that you enjoyed Longwood Gardens, it is a joy to take people over to visit.
To clarify, the curtain at my private living space is in front of my door -- I point out the curtain when folks are here as it is easier to recognise that just the door.
And of course, as you read in the details, we are not in the rest of the building when guests are here.
I don't think you saw my office as it is in a private area in the loft which you did not need to use (not in the living area, there are 2 writing desks for guests to use--as are the washer and dryer on the private bedroom level).
It is a special and unique place, it was wonderful to have you and your family here! And I forgot to let you know that I found the other small wood clacker that got used, love when little ones play the percussion instruments. It was hiding behind the shelves.
Take good care,
Barbara
Our stay at this retreat sanctuary was the perfect experience for our friend's wedding weekend. We were able to access events in PA and Delaware very easily, and the grounds were exquisite. Barbara really embodies the role of host and has crafted such an inviting, welcoming, and calming location. We loved every moment of our stay!
Wonderful host and spacious, beautiful property! Would definitely recommend. We enjoyed sitting by the waterfall and walking the trail into the woods. Longwood Gardens is a 5 minute drive away and a must see!
