Thankful Cottage...a charming, romantic hideaway near the harbor renting Sun-Sun

'Thankful Cottage' is walkable to all of downtown and is roomy for a couples or a party of three The cottage rents by the week, Sunday to Sunday.

'Thankful Cottage' is located in the Village of Bar Harbor near the Town Pier, Town Beach, historic Shore Path walk, and the Museum in the Streets self guided walking tour. Built before the Civil War, the cottage has been lovingly rehabilitated and features the perfect blend of nostalgia with modern amenities. The cottage has off street parking and is walkable to boating, shopping, dining and cultural activities. Bar Harbor is named for the 'bar' to Bar Island which forms the harbor. Bar Island, portrayed by David Maitland Armstrong in his late 1800's painting, 'The Bar, Bar Harbor', is visible from the cottage.

The entire top floor of the cottage is a king bedroom suite with two sitting rooms (one with water view), walk-in closet, full bath and deck with water view.

The first floor includes a fully equipped modern kitchen with full size appliances, living area with gas fireplace, den with pull out twin bed and a second full bath.

Wonder why the cottage is named, 'Thankful'? We traced the deeds back Thankful Rodick who in the mid-1800's lived in the cottage. While Bar Harbor is thankful that this little cottage has survived for 170+- years, we actually named her after the person Thankful.

The cottage, on the Bar Harbor Historic Properties list, is a popular destination for honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries.

Wonderful place to stay and relax

The Thankful Cottage was a wonderful place to stay and relax. It was near the harbor and the shops. We could walk to the Village Green and catch the buses to Acadia National Park. It was near many restaurants, tours, and the harbor park if we just felt like sitting and soaking up the atmosphere. We were very "thankful" that we stayed the week there.

Comfortable 1850 Historical Cottage

Wonderful stay at Thankful Cottage. On the Waterfront street, close to really good restaurants. Bed was extremely comfortable. Centrally located for maximum fun. Close to bike rental for riding the carriage road, close to activity offices for boat rides, kayaking and did I mention close to amazing restaurants. Owners are a great source of local information and are super friendly. Highly recommend for a 1 bedroom, 2 bath house with kitchen. Felt like home for a week.

Great place!

My husband and 15 month old daughter stayed for a week in August. It was wonderful being so close to town. You could walk everywhere! The cottage was perfect for us. Parking in front of house, in town location, & the roof top deck was great to watch the sunset. Just bring your groceries! Sherry was so lovely to work with. You can tell her and her husband took great care to think about every detail a person would need in their home.

A wonderful cottage!

This cottage is a wonderful place to stay in Bar Harbor. The accommodation is even more charming than described. It is very centrally located and easy walking distance to everything. We didn't need our vehicle once we arrived. Everything you could possible need (except your food) is included in the cottage. Sherry has thought of everything including a history of the cottage that was very interesting. The cottage was very clean and the bed very comfortable. Sherry provided numerous fans that kept the cottage cool for sleeping. She also answered all our questions and was available if we needed anything. I absolutely loved staying in the cottage and look forward to coming back.

Great Location

My partner and I stayed at Thankful Cottage the last week in July. It was not a disappointment. It is the perfect little cottage to stay at. It is so quiet and does sit off the main area of traffic. You are very close to downtown and can walk everywhere. We walked on the shore path each night and it was nice not to drive to town. It is also close to Acadia Park. We drove to the park each day and it is a short 10-15 minute drive depending on where you go. Sherry and Ivan are very nice and around if you need anything. It was a pleasure to meet them. The cottage has everything you need. The king bed is very comfortable and the towels in bathrooms are really nice. They really make this cottage feel like home. We will look forward to staying again. Unique....Charming....Perfection

My husband and I stayed one week at Thankful Cottage. We have been to the Bar Harbor/Acadia area quite a few times but never had the pleasure of staying in the town of Bar Harbor, let alone Thankful Cottage. From the moment we saw the cottage and met Sherry we knew we made the right choice. The cottage is beyond charming. Sherry and Ivan have outdone themselves in creating the historic feel of the home. It had everything we ever needed. I loved being right in the heart of Bar Harbor and getting up at sunrise with my camera and capturing the beauty. The cottage is within walking distance to the ships, Bar Island and also trails that take you right into Acadia! Sherry was always there when I had a question (she emailed me back so quickly) and it turned out to be the best of the locations and homes we have rented in this area. We surely will be back next year. You will love it. Thankful Cottage and it's charm follows you home. Thanks to Sherry and Ivan for providing this memorable place.

Thankful Cottage .....The Best

This is our second stay at Thankful Cottage. We wouldn't even venture to look anywhere else!!! This for us, is the ultimate stay. Right in the middle of beautiful Bar Harbor. Sherri and Ivan are most helpful and so down to earth friendly. Every morning, I, personally look forward to sunrise. I can just walk out the front door, across the street, and have numerous places to just watch the beauty. The backdrop of the harbor is breathtaking as well as my daily walk to Bar Island when the tide was out. We spent each day hiking in a different location. The Island Explorer bus depot is right up the street so we can ride for free to our hiking destinations. There is absolutely nothing negative about this little cottage. We will be coming back for as long as we are able, which we hope is a long long time. Thank you Sherri and Ivan for providing this perfect spot in our favorite vacation location. The cottage is clean, comfortable and beautifully decorated. We LOVE Thankful.

Perfect accommodations and location for a couples getaway in Bar Harbor

If you love the ability to walk everywhere, and love antiques without sacrificing modern conveniences, then this is the place for you! Our recent trip to Bar Harbor for our anniversary and the fall foliage, was perfectly paired with the stay at Thankful Cottage. Everything we needed for a relaxing week was included ! Just bring your own food and drink, or eat out at the many wonderful restaurants a minutes walk away, as we did. Honestly, it was the most relaxing vacations I have had in a long time. The king bed was extremely comfortable and made up prior to our arrival. The gas fireplace was instant and inviting, the parking, especially for our huge truck was easy in and out and right in front. The bar to Bar Island was a few minutes walk away, and lobster everywhere in a minutes walk as well.. Cadillac Mountain for sunrises, and sunsets , both of which draw crowds and are awe inspiring, was only a ten minute drive to the entrance, which made it an almost daily ritual for us. So many day trips that were a half hours ride away, made the cottage a perfect home base. We will definitely stay here again. Sherry Rasmussen ,the lovely owner ,made sure that everything was perfect for our stay. Her gracious hospitality was greatly appreciated. Hope to return soon!!

the only negative has nothing to do with the property. Bar Harbor starts to close down this time of year and alot of places are closed, but overall a 5 star place to stay.

The cottage is located in the perfect place. We like to go antiquing but have never had the opportunity to stay in an antique. The 1850s cottage was so cool and the story behind it is fascinating. I would recommend this property, I don't think we could have stayed in a better place. A friend of mine has stayed in another property owned by the same couple that is in front of the Friendly Cottage several times. He is the one that encouraged us to come to Bar Harbor and stay here. I am so glad we did. AWSOME 7 days Thanks

Thankful Cottage is so quaint and the perfect place to stay while vacationing in Bar Harbor. The location is within walking distance to downtown restaurants, shops, paths, etc., and having a parking spot for the week was a huge plus. Sher is a wonderful host. She emailed information on the area in advance, met us upon arrival, and was available for any inquiries during our stay. We had a wonderful vacation and definitely recommend Thankful Cottage.

Unbelievable awesomeness

We had a wonderful time during our week in Bar Harbor. There are so many things to see and do but best of all was our stay at Thankful Cottage. It is a 150 year old cottage just oozing with charm. The owners, Sherry and Ivan, are great hosts and have planned everything to make your vacation special. It is right in Bar Harbor so near everything.

Fantastic Rental

We had a wonderful experience staying at the Thankful Cottage. It was nice to be right in Bar Harbor with a parking spot and not have to worry about parking meters, etc. Sherry was so nice and helpful. Provided us with all kinds of information about the town and things to do. The cottage was so cute and clean. It was perfect.

Perfect couples getaway

We spent a week at Thankful cottage and it was perfect for us! While others are walking several blocks to get to hotels, we were literally minutes from downtown and the sea wall. The cottage is well kept and charming and the owners are very hospitable! A wonderful experience!

Absolutely Perfect

If you want to stay in Bar Harbor, there is no better place to stay. The Rasmussen are the most gracious of hosts. We spent a week here several years ago and were planning a repeat trip in 2020. The pandemic changed that but were accommodated without penalty and with a kind email asking us for our decision before again putting it on the open market. The cottage has all the amenities for 2 or 3 guests. There is a nicely stocked kitchen. One is basically in town but secluded and within walking distance to restaurants, shops and specialty stores. Unless we were unable to climb the steps to the bed/bath area there is never a place that we would rather stay. We are Thankful!

A Unique Cottage

Sherry and Ivan rescued this gem of a cottage and have lovingly restored it into a perfect Maine home-base for a trip exploring Acadia National Park. Everything that we needed was here, and the owners were at hand to help with questions and recommendations, and even sent us a lot of information about the area before our trip. We could not have asked for a better place to stay, hosts, or a better vacation!

Sherry and Ivan have a gem of a rental property with loads of history. Thankful is centrally located and convenient. The cottage was cozy and quite comfortable. We enjoyed reading about the history of the cottage which made our stay even more enjoyable. Sherry and Ivan were great to work with. Thankful for our week at Thankful Cottage

Sher and Ivan responded immediately to repair a malfunctioning window. The charming house is in a perfect location, right in the center of beautiful Bar Harbor, but surprisingly quiet. Having a dedicated parking space, as Thankful Cottages does, is essential in Bar Harbor. We walked to excellent restaurants for dinner every night and appreciated having the well functioning kitchen for breakfasts and lunches. Sher and Ivan are extremely knowledgeable about BH and the island. They made us feel most welcome.

Great location and large kitchen is well stocked with dishes and tools. Property owner is very nice. Only complaints Master bed and pillows are very uncomfortable for a week of stay and the room has no blackout curtains so be prepared for full light at 530 am.

Great Historic House in Bar Harbor Town.

A house with great character, very close to everything in town. Very clean, great for a couples getaway. The hosts Sherry and Ivan are extremely pleasant and very accommodating. Exactly what we expected. We highly recommend Thankful Cottage.

Completely Charming

The pictures of this cottage do not do it justice. There is something interesting in every corner. Every foreseeable need was there. Extra blankets, cooking items, and cozy towels were all tucked away exactly where you would expect them to be. The hosts are gracious and kind. The cottage is right in the middle of down town, so there is no need to worry about parking. You can easily walk everywhere. We would not hesitate to return.

Bar Harbor

The property was excellent and better than advertised! The cottage had plenty of room for three people. The den was much larger than the expected. One can’t ask for a better location. The kitchen was well appointed. 5 min walk to plenty of restaurants. 15 min drive to Cadillac mountain. Would definitely stay here again. Sherry was also great. When we had questions, she was always quick to respond. She knows the area well and always provided great recommendations! She is also taking extra precautions during COVID which was comforting.

We, Sherry and Ivan Rasmussen, have been involved the ARTs in Bar Harbor since the early 1970's. We own galleries and artist studios on the Bar Harbor Waterfront near the cottage. Ivan, who was once Bar Harbor Harbormaster, has spent most of his life near the ocean in his native Oregon and now on Mount Desert Island which is home to Acadia National Park.

Growing up, Sherry's beach was Virginia Beach in her native state. She traveled extensively as an international flight attendant. Though her travels took her to many beautiful destinations, she says that Mt. Desert Island, home to Bar Harbor, is truly one of the world's great treasures...and Acadia's Sand Beach surrounded by mountains is now her beach.

sells in his own 'ART on West' and other galleries.

We live right in the Village of Bar Harbor which is one of Maine's most walkable communities. And just like many of our Thankful Cottage visitors, we walk or bike into Acadia National Park from our home. A free bus runs from mid-June to mid-October from the Village of Bar Harbor into Acadia National Park and to neighboring Villages. The Village of Bar Harbor is surrounded by Acadia National Park and the nearby Bar Island is just a short walk from the cottage. Did you know that the 'bar' across the 'harbor' to Bar Island is the reason for the town's name of Bar Harbor? You can see the 'bar' and Bar Island from the cottage.

We love to share our community and island with visitors from around the world. You check in for your week at our ART on West: Gallery. We are there to get you started on a perfect vacation.
