About this property
Enjoy Sweeping Waterfront View, Watch Lobster Boats from Porch
We close up the cottage during the winter months. Available May 1 - Columbus Day. One-week minimum, Saturday - Saturday, July 1 - Labor Day. Three-day minimum otherwise.
High speed wi-fi and printer.
Three double bedrooms, one twin bedroom. One half-bath, one full bath with tub and hand-held shower, one outside shower.
Our spacious but cozy family cottage is located on a quiet, dead-end shorefront road, just a few yards from the water with an uninterrupted view of Josiah's Cove and then across the sparkling sea 'all the way to Portugal.' It retains the charm of its 100-year history even though we've lovingly restored and equipped it with up-to-date appliances, numerous sky-lights, new mattresses and wireless internet service.
We do not provide linens. Guests who do not bring their own can rent them from a service on the island.
The cottage is perfectly suited for a quiet family holiday. It is not appropriate for large groups or noisy parties. Absolute maximum occupancy is 8. No weddings or other events are allowed.
It's a strictly non-smoking cottage. We are sorry, but we cannot accommodate pets.
The top floor includes the master bedroom with water views, double bed, adjoining full bath with clawfoot tub, and an adjoining children's bedroom with two twin beds. The main level includes two double bedrooms with a half-bath between, along with the kitchen, dining room and living room.
A brick fireplace defines the cathedral-ceilinged living room. But most guests prefer sitting on the front porch to watch the sun rising at dawn, the lobster boats pulling their traps in the early morning, the sail boats passing all day long and the lights of the giant tankers twinkling in the distance at night.
For insurance and safety reasons guests are not allowed to use the fireplace.
Guests may use the barbecues outside, but must provide their own fuel, propane or charcoal, both readily available on the island.
There is a wonderful outdoor shower at the back of the house.
Peaks Island is a safe and quiet family paradise offering beaches, tennis courts, kayaking, fishing (including from the rocks in front of the cottage) and great walking and bike-riding. Bikes and kayaks are available for rent. And it's all just a 20-minute car ferry ride from the shopping, excellent restaurants, movies and first-class art museum of Portland.
The cottage is normally open from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. Please inquire about early May and late October.

About the host
Hosted by Woody Halsey

Recently retired, I hope to spend at least a couple of weeks each summer at the Peaks Island cottage. It's the place to which my children and grandchildren cannot wait to return!
Why they chose this property
We chose Peaks Island because it offered the peace and quiet of a country location only minutes from the restaurants and cultural life of the city of Portland. And we chose our cottage because of its unbeatable ocean view. My mother used to say that gazing out over an expanse of water was good for the soul. She was right.
What makes this property unique
Total relaxation and summer family fun the way it used to be.
Peaks Island is a family summer paradise offering beaches, sailing, fishing, tennis and bicycling on safe roads. You'll see very few cars, but will enjoy stunning ocean views as you pedal or walk around the island. Visitors can shop at the local market or lobster shack and enjoy home-made meals on the porch, eat out at one of three restaurants on the island or sample the broad range of fare offered by chefs (some nationally known) in the city of Portland. Car and passenger ferries make the 20-minute crossing back and forth between mainland and island approximately every hour. Guided tours of the island via golf cart are available, and a visit to the museum dedicated to the Fifth Maine Civil War regiment is a must for history buffs.
