This cedar and granite retreat sits on a point 25’ from the water and offers tremendous bay views, secluded canoeing/kayaking, and quick access to Acadia or Schoodic. Originally built as an artist’s hideaway on the unique protected waters of Taunton Bay, Escape is a perfect refuge for those looking to enjoy the water, explore the islands and shores, or lounge on the massive deck.
“Escape” is a modern, spacious vacation retreat with 2BR and a large loft, 3Baths and a large wraparound deck that steps down to the granite grottos of Taunton Bay. The downstairs flooring and carpeting have just been redone. A spacious master suite offers great bay views from every window and a pink granite fireplace. The main kitchen is open and well appointed with stainless appliances and a rough granite half wall separating it from the dining and living rooms. The loft has three beds, great views and a game area for the children. A small second bedroom, with views, is situated on the main level adjacent to a bath/laundry room. Two canoes and a kayak are available for exploring the bay and the mussel bed.
The home provides WiFi, BBQ, washer/dryer and a TV/DVD.
This quiet and secluded location is perfect for relaxing on the deck or the shore and within 30 minutes drive to Acadia or Schoodic Point. Your family will love playing in the calm water on the cove, exploring the bay and the marine life around the mussel beds and, of course, listening to the loons.

Thank you for letting us rent your beautiful home. We really enjoyed our stay here while visiting Acadia NP. The views and setup of the house were perfect. We would love to stay here again someday.
Escape is our favorite place to come and relax. It is peaceful and beautiful. Easy to get to Acadia for hiking. Mark is very easy to communicate with. And the sunsets are magnificent!
ESCAPE on Evergreen Point is a lovely, large house. You cannot beat the location just feet away from the bay. Also, it is just north and east of MDI but an easy drive to Acadia. Also an easy drive to the Schoodic Penninsula that we also love. I would rent this property again in a heart-beat!
This place is great! Right on the water and the sunsets are phenomenal. We loved eating dinner and having the sunset right there over the water. Everything was clean and easy to find, our dog loved hanging out on the porch. We did a lot of hikes in Acadia and the weather cooperated. Gorman Mountain and Jacob’s Pond were favorites. Cadillac Mountain View’s are not to be missed. We also did the Acadia Puffin Cruise and I highly recommend it. There are only 20 or so people and we saw puffins and lots of other birds. We also saw lots of seals (mama seals with their babies - so cute). Tricia was the guide and was knowledgeable and super friendly. Book ahead as it fills up quickly. Place was perfect for us (with our teenager) and our Pomsky (she is a small dog, 20 lbs and very well behaved). Our dog got lots of attention and did very well being in a new place. Hope to go back in the future. Host is nice and there were no issues so we didn’t contact him - there was a number of you needed anything for a house manager and the owner. So you’re in good hands.
My family of five had a wonderful time at the property. and exploring the Schoodic Peninsula and seeing the rest of Acadia. We really enjoyed kayaking and taking the canoes out on the bay. Sunsets with a campfire and smores were so relaxing and fun at the end of the day.
My family loved our stay at "Escape!" The house sat right on the water's edge where my kids could watch the change in the tides and search for intertidal creatures during the day and at night, we would sit on the back porch and watch the sunset over the water. The house was clean and had everything we needed for our week away. We would absolutely stay here again!
We had a wonderful time, could NOT get over the amazing views. We would stay here again and again! Lots of places to go hiking and exploring, though we went off season so not a lot of close restaurants open (which we knew going in).
Waking up every morning to the view in the waterfront and seeing the stars on a clear night was truly one of the great assets of this location. Property owner was responsive and helpful when needed. Looking forward to going back.
We truly enjoyed our stay at the Escape. It was quite spacious for our family of six and had a gorgeous backyard. Love to spend more time at the Escape on our future visits to Acadia NP and Mt. Desert Island. The main living area has been recently updated and loved the amount of space we had including the convenience of cooking in the open kitchen.
Place is exactly what we were looking for. Secluded, right on the ocean. Loons and seals right in front of the property. Firepit on the rocks. Amazing! Cannot wait to rent it again.
Beautiful spot.
Owner is very accommodating and follows through on questions.
Information on Escape and surrounding area was very helpful.
So very peaceful and quiet there.
Thank you Mark with entrusting me with your familes home.
This house is an escape. It has a beautiful view and it is quiet and serene. Anyone staying in the loft needs to come down to the first floor to use the bathroom. Property is approx. 45 mins from Bar Harbor.
Escape was a perfect oasis for our time in Maine! It was a peaceful, quiet, secluded location where we spent time canoeing, fishing, and exploring the beauty of the Taunton Bay nature and wildlife. We found it to be a manageable distance from Bar Harbor and Acadia, the quiet side of Mount Desert Island, and Schoodic Peninsula. The amenities of the property were more than satisfactory and the invaluable insight into the area from the hosts helped make our stay memorable. Cannot recommend enough!
Amazing spot! Secluded, beautiful sunsets and loved watching the tide change. We saw seals, eagles and all types of seagulls. Made lobsters multiple times.
Our dogs really enjoyed the cove. Such a great spot! Only recommendation would be to note in the listing that the fireplace is “non working” or not for guest use.
We LOVED this unique and lovely home perched above the water in a beautiful, quiet, peaceful area. It is immaculately clean, has everything one needs to be comfortable in every way, and is a place we'd love to return to when we visit the area again. The owner is kind and provides all kinds of useful, interesting information about the area. As said above, book it.
Property was great. Wonderful view of the Bay. Away from Bar Harbor crowd but a nice drive down there if you wanted to. Everything is easy to get to. We came a little early in the season, so a lot of places were just opening up. But it also meant less people!
Property had everything you needed. I suggest boiling your own lobster in the back with water from the bay just like owner suggested. It was great. We would definitely stay here again.
Mark's home was exactly as described. Also, Mark was very attentive to any issues that arised. The coffee maker at the cabin was not working our first morning there, but he got us new one. Our kids loved being on the water and finding creatures everyday. And the canoes were an added bonus. We would highly recommend Mark's cabin to anyone looking for a quiet time on the Bay.

About the host
Hosted by Mark McMillen
Mark spent summers as a child in Maine, helping his parents and siblings build the original cabin. During college summers he dug clams and blood worms in the area to pay much of his tuition (those were the days!). He left the east coast after college at MIT and now lives with his wife in Colorado, where the tide has been out for far too long. An avid outdoorsman and naturalist, Mark's world view remains shaped by summers at Escape.
Why they chose this property
Escape has been a formative part of our family for three generations. Parents and three kids spent early summers clearing the land, building the cabin and putting in granite walks to manicuring the blueberry bushes. The parents added on, remodeled and modernized the structure before retiring here for 20+ years. JoAnn McMillen, painted and photographed the coast here for over 40 years, most often using the bay as her subject. The third generation spent quality time in the summer with their grandparents in Maine. Revitalizing the cabin in 2015 and spending time in Maine again has allowed us to continue the tradition.
What makes this property unique
Taunton Bay is unique - period. It's calmer, warmer and more comfortable than the open waters of Frenchman's Bay. Perfect for exploring by canoe and kayak. The south and west facing deck has the perfect balance of sun, shade, breeze and protection to make afternoons incredibly relaxing. The granite grottos are smooth, comfortable and warm the water. The setting on the point allows for sunsets over the water every evening.
The sealife and wildlife in and around the bay is incredible - loons, ducks, eagles, gulls, kingfishers, herons, seals, clams, mussels, oysters, scallops, horseshoe crabs, rock crabs, lobsters, starfish, sea urchins and more are all out there waiting to be discovered.
A shellfish license (available in Ellsworth) permits you to harvest shellfish from the bay for personal consumption subject to appropriate restrictions. The mussel bed (200 yards from the cove by canoe) has mussels, razor clams and even a few oysters.
