The Lighthouse. unique lodging overlooking the harbor. Sauna special!
The 'Lighthouse' is a special lodging overlooking the town and harbor of Grand Marais from its center. You are right in the heart of town within a block of everything- yet comfortably removed when you need a breather. You can sit up in bed and view the harbor and the big lake beyond. If you would like to access the sauna please contact the owners in advance or book it yourself on our website and set up a reservation- it is an add on expense and is first come first serve. You can see the nightly amount in the rental agreement before you book and you pay for it on our direct site. November and April have sauna specials. At the Lighthouse there is covered parking that leads to a stairway that takes you up to the Lighthouse. The view of the old harbor from the balcony is stunning. There is a wrought iron table and chairs on the balcony for relaxing. Inside the Lighthouse you will find a queen bed, tile shower and bathroom, galley kitchen, custom dining table for two, LCD TV (please bring your own streaming codes, there is no cable or area broadcast content). The bed is set at an angle and faces southeast to capture the views of the harbor in the morning through large windows. Many of our guests yearn for a connection with nature, the lake, the community, a reconnection with each other, and permission to come to a full stop for deep rest. There are transom windows around the perimeter of the apartment that let in light from all points on the compass but do not compromise privacy. Eye masks are provided for those that want to sleep in :-). Notice how the light changes as the day progresses. Observe the color differences around sunset or early in the morning as the Great Lake passes through its moods. The ceiling is very high and is vaulted and timberframed with unique 'Dragon Beams' from local timberframe artisans. Topping the lighthouse is an octagonal lighthouse cupola that lets light in all day and moonlight at night and contains a genuine ships lantern that you can switch on from the bed. And on top of the cuppola is a custom copper ball, in keeping with the lighthouses of the North Shore. The antique ship's light that occupies the cuppola can guide you as you walk home after a night of festivities in the town. There is an all cedar Finnish Sauna next door to the Lighthouse for your exclusive use for an additional fee. Usage comes with robes and additional towels and complete instructions. Simply state you would like to add the Sauna to the notes of your stay when you make your reservation and we will contact you with details and availability. If sauna availability is important to make your decision to stay with us then please message us before you make your reservation so we can see if it is available during your stay. Watch the fog roll in and out from your bed while you drink your morning coffee, and listen to the strains of local live music as the town celebrates the short summers at night. The gally kitchen is small but thoroughly modern with all the necessities. The Lighthouse is above the 'North Shore Fisherman's Cabin', a restored historic log home. The Lighthouse is known for its inspiring charm. There have been plays and musicals written here, a fair number of proposals, and a good number of honeymoons. Come share the fantastic energy that is The Lighthouse.
Lastly, we are implementing an incentive for you to choose trip insurance. We have discounted our rates on our direct website here by an additional 7% (the total savings between our direct site and say... AirBnB is now 14-21% only if you book on this direct site). We are doing this so that you may select trip insurance during your booking process. It will be offered to you while you are completing your booking and they charge 7%. We do not make any money on that. The cancellation policy we have had for 10 years is as follows:
You may cancel within 48 hours of your booking for any reason. After that you can cancel with a 10% penalty up until 60 days prior to your arrival. After that you may cancel but your deposit can not be refunded.
If you have trip insurance you can be reimbursed according to which policy you chose. And we are subsidizing it for you by having reduced our rental rates well below any other rates where our properties can be found. It's up to you, pocket the savings and run the risk of cancellation, or still get some savings and have the peace of mind of having some of your investment in your vacation protected in case of unforeseen events.
No broadcast or cable Chanels. Smart TV only. Bring your codes for subscriptions. The sauna is available for an additional fee. Please contact the host to verify availability of the sauna for booking during the time of your stay.

A wonderfully functional space, with a sweet little kitchen, a gorgeous view of the lake, and within walking distance of town. The "lighthouse" roof is beautifully lit when you are inside at night. A great option for 2 people!

Everything was perfect, clean and cute. The lighthouse is a great space. It’s very comfortable, with a great view of the harbor. With our brief interaction with the owners, they were very personable and helpful. We would definitely return.
Small but efficient space. First time in Grand Marais. Highly recommend!

Very cozy space with everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Will definitely come back!
We stayed here while doing some hiking and climbing in the area. The Lighthouse was fun to stay in and a cozy place to relax at the end of the day. Also enjoyed that it was really easy to walk to nearby restaurants.
We enjoyed our February stay, and we're very happy to have the sauna option.

This was a quiet and peaceful stay in a unique property. The property was very clean, and had everything we needed. The bed and pillows were very comfortable. We enjoyed our stay at The Lighthouse.
We had a spectacular time at the Lighthouse! The home was clean, warm and inviting. And it was so nice waking up with a view of the water. Just what we needed for a quick trip to Grand Marais. The hosts were very responsive and provided us with a lot of recommendations. We will be staying again!
Just big enough for two people!! It was a cool little place, and we had just enough space for when we were there. It had everything that we needed, and we would definitely stay again. Can’t beat the location if you are looking for walking distance to all of the places to visit in Grand Marais.
Highly recommend!!

About the host
Hosted by Todd and Susan Miller
The owners and managers of the Lighthouse are Todd and Susan Miller. Susan is originally from Duluth Mn and Todd from the Twin Cities. They have sailed the world's oceans together on their 35 foot sloop 'Snow Day', and have now settled down here in Grand Marais since 2003. Todd is a licensed Captain, and served on the local park board for many years and currently serves on the Planning and Zoning board. He is also active in community projects with area youth and founded the Grand Marais Music Collaborative, a 501 3c non profit benefiting area youth and musicians. Susan is the Special Education teacher at the local charter school. Todd's interests include leading a local dance band, building and restoring fun things, messing about in boats, and managing Real Estate. Susans interests include gardening, thrift store exploring, and cooking. They both love to travel and learn.
Why they chose this property
We chose this location because it is very special. We are lifelong Miinnesotans and have been passing through Grand Marais our whole lives. We wanted a home on the North Shore, and we believe that Grand Marais is the jewel of the North Shore. Within Grand Marais we wanted to be close to the action and the water. Although this is a very small town, it has big shoulders when it comes to culture and beauty. We belive our specific location is magical because the big lake cools us in summer and warms us in winter. We can walk to everything. We never get tired of the many moods of Lake Superior and enjoy watching the lake from this property.
What makes this property unique
Travel insurance- a more popular option than ever before in these uncertain times! If booking direct you are saving roughly 12-15%. Travel insurance costs between 7 and 9.8%. You can still come out ahead and be fully insured. Or, if. you are confident (and we really hope you are) just pocket the savings and treat your group to a good dinner when you get here. But please don't just book some dates and then cancel and assume there will be a refund- you must make the correct decisions now that suit your comfort level.
Please let us know of your full agreement with these terms and we will go ahead and approve your booking. Thanks so much! Todd and Susan
