About this property
Historic Retreat in the City
Gorgeous, eclectic, vintage is an apt description for the apartment with loads of living space and a 10 min drive to all of St. Louis' attractions. The Retreat is super close to the area hospitals and St. Louis University. You will find everything you need for a short or extended stay. It is set up for work or play including a desk and a bar set up . Enjoy our super comfy Green Tea memory foam mattresses to rest. The space includes three separate, private bedrooms.
Please note, this is a non-smoking house. Smoking in the house is a $200 charge for deodorization. We welcome pets if you clear your pet's visit with us first. We charge an additional $25 per pet fee for pets. We also ask that you clean up after your pet's unique mess.
I love a place that has the things I didn't remember to bring. Let's face it...no one wants to buy salt and pepper or a huge jar of spices for a short stay. We have tried to think of everything, but if we missed something, let us know and we will get more stuff to make the next guest's stay even better. We love furry friends and have three in our home.

It was good for what I needed a place to sleep and relax
This place was perfect for St. Louis! Great location off the freeway, to get downtown, to the zoo, to the ballgames, etc. The place was historically old, but done nicely inside, and very spacious--way bigger than I mentally anticipated.
The Apartment is clean, quiet and the beds are so comfortable. Check in process was seamless and the one time I had to contact the host the response was immediate.
It was a charming second story walk up that had a historic feel and a convenient location to downtown and other locations. There were some minor cleaning issues, but the host was very responsive and accommodating.
Very peaceful and serene. I found it was very convenient to great neighbor restaurants, bars and concert venue. Quiet given the proximity to the highway. Really chill vibe. I would come back had great experience.
This place was very convenient for traveling with a family and very comfortable. I was worried about on street parking but that was never a problem for us. There was always plenty of parking near the apartment. I will definitely stay there again when I am in the area. Thanks
Safe, clean and roomie. The apartment is in an older historic building, which I loved. If I get my deposit back in a few days, I'll be totally happy with the first time experience.
Nice older apartment that has a great “Retro” feel.
Our annual trip with the grandkids. We all live in the country so the kids loved being in the city and the old school feel of the apartment. Host communicated with us through email after day one to ensure everything was alright and to see if we needed anything.

Older home
The location is in an apartment which kinda through me off at first because it was not in the description. The living room and sun room were nice and homey though. The beds were very comfortable too.
The listing looks like a house from the pictures but it is actually a very large apartment on the second floor. Otherwise, the property met our expectations.
This old apartment was perfect for our stay for a gaming convention weekend. It's gorgeous and unique. The sunroom/veranda was great for early morning coffee and the location had plenty of parking.
The only drawback I would list is that the back bedroom did not have air conditioning. There was a vent that lead from one of the other rooms, but it did make the room warmer than the rest of the apartment.

It was a great city apartment experience, nicely furnished with all the little things we would need. The kids liked the sun porch the most. It was their "club house". They liked having adjoining rooms. There were games and toys, which they liked. We started a game of Monopoly and played it for days. It was one of their favorite things. When we got home, they said they missed the apartment the most.

Close proximity to expressway
Place was in close proximity to the expressway. Response from property manager was in a reasonable time. Property need cosmetic upgrades. Paint in the bathroom started peeling and one bedroom door doesn’t have locks.

The apartment was perfect to fit our 5 person family for a quick overnight before an early flight out of Lambert airport. The location was close to the highway, which made it noisy, but also very convenient for getting where you need to go quickly. Great price too.
My family and I rented the urban retreat for the Christmas and new year holidays. The house was incredibly roomy and full of amenities. It was very opulently furnished wIth a cool vibe inside. It had a nice artistic feel and was more than sufficient to sleep my family of 5. The beds were awesome and my wife even commented that she had the best nights sleep of any stay away from home since she could remember. Would recommend highly as a great value for the price.
This was a great little place! It was about 15 minutes away from fun stuff downtown and the neighborhood was awesome. The manager is easy to get a hold of, very friendly, and helpful. The only hiccup we had was the property needed us to checkin late (6pm) due to an unforeseen issue and I didn’t find out until about 30 minutes before checkin. Overall, would recommend!

About the host
Hosted by Devon Rucker
The Marquette Buillding is owned by City Castle LLC operated by Lisa Gallagher and Devon Rucker. We bought the building from Jim Roos of Neighborhood Enterprises. Jim had a long history of working with the city to improve St. Louis City neighborhoods. Like many cities, it suffered through a period of suburban flight leaving the city without the tax base and investment to keep the city vibrant. When we took over the building in 2016, the area was just seeing signs of true investment and diversity. This is my favorite building in my portfolio. Totaling 12 units, the apartment building was the 4th 3 story building in the area. One other 3 story building ibuilt by the same builder is the Lafayette which sits opposite the Marquette Building. The St. Louis Daily Globe penned an article, dated December 8 1812, chronicling the building's ground breaking. The building's construction cost a whopping $30,000 back then which was considered to be a tidy sum.
Immediately after the 3 bedroom apartment now known as The Retreat became vacant, Lisa went about creating a variable stay rental with furnishings acquired in antique shops and from other sources in the area. The art work in the unit exmplifies people from around the world. Since Lisa is a world traveler, she loves the experience of meeting and knowing people from all over the world. She feels that world travel is a humbling and mind opening experience that offers the greatest opportunity for world peace.
Why they chose this property
When Lisa initially heard about The Marquette Building, she was looking for larger apartment buildings to acquire in St. Louis. She already had several four family, duplex and single family homes. Lisa was excited about The Marquette Building's architecture and potential since the previous owner had only partially renovated the building prior to sale.
What makes this property unique
Staying at The Marquette Building offers a guest an opportunity to experience an over 100 year old building that is typical of St. Louis City. The buidling is conveniently located in the heart of the city close to Downtown, The Central West End, Botanical Heights, Forest Park, Tower Grove Park and all of St. Louis' attractions. It is a 10 minute commute to almost any city attraction.
