Just a few minutes from the best Kayaking, Rafting and Trout Fishing in the country!
Built in 2004, this single-floor rustic cabin is tucked into a mountain ledge overlooking the Nantahala Gorge. If you're looking for quiet and seclusion but in a location that is central to all that makes Western NC great -- then you've found the perfect retreat. Black Dog Overlook is located 15 minutes north of the quaint town of Andrews, a half hour south of Bryson City, a 1/2 hour north of Murphy, about 2.5 hours from Atlanta, 2 hours from Chatanooga and Knoxville, an hour from Maggie Valley and 1.5 hours from Asheville. This is the type of country you've seen in movies like Last of the Mohicans, Hunger Games and A Walk in the Woods.
Here is the best part: the cabin property borders on the Nantahala National Forest. We're working this winter on blazing a hiking path to the Bartram Trail that runs along the mountain ridges that are behind the cabin. The Appalachian Trail lies a few miles further into the Forest, but you're close to several trailheads. But you can get quite a workout just hiking the area around the cabin. See if you can find the hidden plateau with the baby pine trees about 500ft up the mountain. The National Forest is also a NC Game Lands areas for licensed hunters.
In addition to hiking and hunting, the cabin is sitting in the middle some of the best trout and fly fishing in the Southeast. Even if you don't have your own gear, or haven't done this kind of fishing before, there are numerous outfitters within minutes of the cabin who will set you up or take you on a guided fishing trip on the rivers near here.
Speaking of rivers - perhaps the one thing this are is most famous for is the whitewater of the Nantahala River. At Black Dog Overlook you're just a few minutes from any number of rafting, kayaking and tubing companies, including the word famous Nantahala Outdoor Center. Or if you bring your own gear you can explore the waters yourself from the local put-ins. Or maybe just pack a picnic lunch and sit and enjoy the incredible views by the riverside. The rapids are a sight to behold and are the home for many Olympic-class competitions.
When you get home from shopping, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, rafting or hiking - you have a wonderful retreat to enjoy. The outside features a big wraparound porch affording you incredible views down the mountain and across the valley to gorgeous mountain ridges miles off. At night you can spot the far-off lights of cars negotiating the hairpin road. Other travelers have commented that it's like looking at a miniature train set off in the distance. There is a firepit and also an open fire grill dug into the mountainside. (At some times during the year there may be a 'No Burn' notice, please check before you start you campfire.)
The cabin interior features wood walls and ceilings throughout. This is a true log cabin! The romantic master bedroom is complete with a locally crafted kingsize wood bed, with a brand new memory foam mattress, it's own fireplace and clawfoot tub! There is a second bedroom with a fullsize bed on the bottom and a twin up top. There is a single bathroom with shower and a beautiful, rustic ceramic sink. A fully equipped kitchen adjoins the living room and looks out the 15ft high prow-front to the mountains outside. There is a supermarket in Andrews, just 15 minutes away for you to outfit yourself for your stay if you enjoy cooking. The living room features another fireplace and comfortable seating. We've provided you with a TV, DVD player, a selection of DVDs, a radio, games, and books. There are a washer and dryer with laundry necessities as well. Towels and linens are provided. Just bring yourselves and your bags and a desire to relax!
Again - this cabin is quiet and secluded and meant to be that way. Cell coverage is spotty, Verizon is the only carrier with signal there. There is no cable or satellite TV or internet (at this time). Quite frankly, no one who stays here misses it!
