About this property

Romantic And Secluded Mountainside Cabin Overlooking The Nantahala Gorge.

Just a few minutes from the best Kayaking, Rafting and Trout Fishing in the country!

Built in 2004, this single-floor rustic cabin is tucked into a mountain ledge overlooking the Nantahala Gorge. If you're looking for quiet and seclusion but in a location that is central to all that makes Western NC great -- then you've found the perfect retreat. Black Dog Overlook is located 15 minutes north of the quaint town of Andrews, a half hour south of Bryson City, a 1/2 hour north of Murphy, about 2.5 hours from Atlanta, 2 hours from Chatanooga and Knoxville, an hour from Maggie Valley and 1.5 hours from Asheville. This is the type of country you've seen in movies like Last of the Mohicans, Hunger Games and A Walk in the Woods.

Here is the best part: the cabin property borders on the Nantahala National Forest. We're working this winter on blazing a hiking path to the Bartram Trail that runs along the mountain ridges that are behind the cabin. The Appalachian Trail lies a few miles further into the Forest, but you're close to several trailheads. But you can get quite a workout just hiking the area around the cabin. See if you can find the hidden plateau with the baby pine trees about 500ft up the mountain. The National Forest is also a NC Game Lands areas for licensed hunters.

In addition to hiking and hunting, the cabin is sitting in the middle some of the best trout and fly fishing in the Southeast. Even if you don't have your own gear, or haven't done this kind of fishing before, there are numerous outfitters within minutes of the cabin who will set you up or take you on a guided fishing trip on the rivers near here.

Speaking of rivers - perhaps the one thing this are is most famous for is the whitewater of the Nantahala River. At Black Dog Overlook you're just a few minutes from any number of rafting, kayaking and tubing companies, including the word famous Nantahala Outdoor Center. Or if you bring your own gear you can explore the waters yourself from the local put-ins. Or maybe just pack a picnic lunch and sit and enjoy the incredible views by the riverside. The rapids are a sight to behold and are the home for many Olympic-class competitions.

When you get home from shopping, sightseeing, fishing, hunting, rafting or hiking - you have a wonderful retreat to enjoy. The outside features a big wraparound porch affording you incredible views down the mountain and across the valley to gorgeous mountain ridges miles off. At night you can spot the far-off lights of cars negotiating the hairpin road. Other travelers have commented that it's like looking at a miniature train set off in the distance. There is a firepit and also an open fire grill dug into the mountainside. (At some times during the year there may be a 'No Burn' notice, please check before you start you campfire.)

The cabin interior features wood walls and ceilings throughout. This is a true log cabin! The romantic master bedroom is complete with a locally crafted kingsize wood bed, with a brand new memory foam mattress, it's own fireplace and clawfoot tub! There is a second bedroom with a fullsize bed on the bottom and a twin up top. There is a single bathroom with shower and a beautiful, rustic ceramic sink. A fully equipped kitchen adjoins the living room and looks out the 15ft high prow-front to the mountains outside. There is a supermarket in Andrews, just 15 minutes away for you to outfit yourself for your stay if you enjoy cooking. The living room features another fireplace and comfortable seating. We've provided you with a TV, DVD player, a selection of DVDs, a radio, games, and books. There are a washer and dryer with laundry necessities as well. Towels and linens are provided. Just bring yourselves and your bags and a desire to relax!

Again - this cabin is quiet and secluded and meant to be that way. Cell coverage is spotty, Verizon is the only carrier with signal there. There is no cable or satellite TV or internet (at this time). Quite frankly, no one who stays here misses it!

Beautiful area

I found the cabin very clean, comfortable and welcoming. The road up was the tricky part- The road, after several days of rain, was washed out in a few areas, causing holes in the road. So, an all wheel drive or four-wheel-drive was definitely needed. (Thank goodness I borrowed my friends Subaru AWD!) Phone reception was next to nonexistent in the area, so be aware of that! You may want to have all your maps, bookings, etc. done/printed out before you get near the Nantahala gorge area. The clawfoot tub in the bedroom was to die for, after many long hikes. (Thanks to Joe [owner] for all of the good info on surrounding area!) However, to my great dismay 😕, the fireplace in front of the clawfoot tub did not work. Was very disappointed about this since the weather was very cold and the ‘fireplace tub’ was the main reason I was drawn to this cabin. On one of the lucky days I had reception, I got in touch with the owner who said he had put in a few calls to get it fixed, but no one ever showed. That is really the only complaint that I would have. The bed was extremely comfortable, and I loved the porch and fire pit. Would definitely stay there again If I could have a confirmation the bedroom fireplace worked!

Weekend Getaway

What an awesome cabin in Andrews, NC! We loved the porch! My niece actually conquered the fish game with the circle and peg! The cabin was neat. It was clean. It was exactly what we needed. It was awesome to watch our 2 twenty year olds survive without WiFi. Thank you!

Beautiful cabin!

Love this cabin. The location is perfect. Far enough off the beating path for privacy yet close to all the amenities. We will definitely be returning for a longer stay.

Beautiful, very pleased.

Everything was excellent Joe was very nice and professional. Can't wait to return. I loved how close it was to some of the most beautiful waterfalls I've ever seen. It's a perfect getaway highly recommended. Be sure to read that, it is recommended you have a four wheel drive vehicle, you can get up there without one however it's pretty tricky and well worth it.

Rustic Cabin

The cabin was clean, cozy and rustic. We enjoyed the crisp air as we sat around the fire pit every night. All in all it is a great cabin. Our only pitfall was I didn't see that a 4WD was recommended. We barely made it up the steep wet (rained) gravel / leaves road in our 2WD SUV- that was a nail biting situation. If you are looking to get away, unplug and enjoy some serenity I would recommend you consider this cabin.

Last summer fling

Great place for solitude. We enjoyed our brief stay. Location was great for the activities we wanted to pursue. The road was in good shape and not a problem. Would stay again if opportunity comes up.

Nice cabin but dirty.

We loved the location! But there were dirty floors and sheets. None of the beds were clean so we work on cabin as soon as we got there. Not fun!!! No where to put trash!!

The cabin was secluded and well kept, we loved the rustic decor and homely feel. It felt like home!

We will be back no doubt about that. Upon arrival we were short a few wash clothes and towels (we are a family of 7). Joe was very quick to take care of that issue. Joe recommended some places for us to check out on our trip, and while we enjoyed the rafting and fishing, the highlight of the trip was the water fall with swimming hole that Joe led us too. Thank you so much Joe for allowing us to call your home ours for just a few days. Thank you for all your quick responses, problem solving and tips. Can’t say enough about our experience at your cabin. We were fine with no cell service and tv as it allowed plenty of family time. Tv would have been nice I guess but I know you said that’s be taken care of soon. Overall, we had one of the best vacations ever and it all started with your cabin and your hospitality. Thanks so much

Quiet get away.

My wife and I left our five children with the grandparents for a week long getaway in the quiet hills of N.C. This cabin was a serine getaway for us. I loved the seclusion and the peacefulness. I do recommend a 4WD to access it as the drive is steep but we had no issues with that. The "grill" could be a little better as it is a dug out pit in the side of the hill and I had issues getting it to draft well enough to cook on but I just switched to grilling it over the campfire.

Awesome cabin!

My family loved staying here. My wife and I took an anniversary trip to Bryson City last year and wanted to take the kids with us this time. After looking through our list of options, we decided to go with Joe and Tara’s cabin. We planned the trip kind of last minute but they were quick to approve our request. We did not realize how close the cabin was to all the recreation, which was a pleasant surprise. The driveway was a lot harder to get up than I figured, but it was definitely worth it. The cabin was really beautiful and homey inside, and the decor was awesome. The beds and couch was really comfortable. More than enough room for our family of 5. We spent a lot of time outside around the fire pit and on the wrap-around porch. Really enjoyed playing the trout game. Who knew that little game could bring hours of entertainment lol. Keep in mind that there is absolutely no cell service and no internet, which we didn’t mind at all. I do suggest that they think about getting a landline for emergencies, otherwise I wouldn’t change a thing. Thank you Joe and Tara!

A piece of heaven!

The cabin and peacefulness was everything we wanted. So clean and so much room. I have to admit the weather sucked it rained everyday we were there. The raod going up and driveway was a trick--are car was low so we hit bottom once so we had to figure out a way to get in and out . Would love to stay again. Loved the hint of watching the cars from the porch at night -it did look like trains going around! Would have like to have had just local TV station or internet coverage so we could have had a better way of looking at the weather.

Comfy, cozy, quiet, secluded! Beautiful cabin for adults!

The drive up was steep... definitely recommend 4 wheel drive vehicle. The cabin was rustic, beautiful and cozy! Couple of issues when we first arrived but Joe was wonderful and we fixed them quickly. On a side note...the cleaning crew was not the best as several things were left undone and there were unclean dishes. But all in all, the vacation stay was nice and we enjoyed it! I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.
