About this property

Relax in the glow of a campfire at this waterfront cottage on Thompson Lake

This 3-bedroom cottage in Oxford is perfect for your special escape. Just 50 feet from the water’s edge, this charming cottage has unparalleled lake access! There are no crazy hills to navigate, and only minimal stairs.

Enter the lake from your own private dock with sturdy aluminum steps, and you will quickly appreciate the sandy bottom. Our location is considered the premier location on the lake, with beautiful western views across the broadest section of the lake. .

Spectacular views of the lake abound from the moment you step inside this charming escape from the stress of your daily life. Spend a quiet evening listening to the loons around the fire pit, or spend an afternoon swimming while eagles patrol the shores. Thompson lake routinely enjoys a spot in the top 5% of Maine’s most pristine lakes and is fed by the famous Poland Spring Aquifer.

Speaking of water, there is no need to haul in bottled drinking water! Unlike many cottages, we have some of the freshest, cleanest tap water available for you, supplied by our own private well drawing from the famous Poland Spring Aquifer.

Enjoy swimming and water-sports when the sun shines, or on a rainy day visit the nearby Oxford Casino. Shop the outlets in Freeport, or enjoy Portland’s famous foodie spots. The Oxford area has some world-class rock hounding locations. Boat across the lake to enjoy a lobster roll or some pizza at the Outpost. Enjoy a hike or bike ride along Maine’s many scenic trails. Stargaze from the dock, and maybe catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights or a shooting star if you are lucky. Thompson Lake holds the current state record for small mouth bass, so borrow one of our poles if you have a fishing license!

Rent a boat if you like. The Thompson Lake Marina has so many options from pontoon boats and ski boats to peaceful canoes. We have 2 moorings available for your use.

The cottage was thoroughly renovated in 2023, and has all new kitchen appliances, new bath fixtures, and new furniture.

With 1 split king bed in the downstairs bedroom and a queen bed in each of the two upstairs bedrooms, plus a queen futon on the shady screened sleeping porch, up to 8 guests will have a wonderful night's sleep. Please keep in mind that the futon is not inside the cottage but on a screened porch. If you are booking in the early spring or late fall, it may not be comfortable to use the futon due to cool temperatures. In shoulder seasons we therefore recommend a six guest maximum.

If you prefer twin beds to a king, we can make that happen for you! There is a full bath downstairs and an added half bath upstairs for your convenience

For your convenience we have a gas grill available, a fire pit, and an expansive lakeside deck with cheerful party lights, comfortable chairs and a large table. A second deck we call the coffee deck is perched just ten feet from waters edge, offering a peaceful spot to start your day. Enjoy the hammock for a vibrant sunset over the lake.

Inside, enjoy our puzzle and game selections, and the modern conveniences of our newly remodeled kitchen, with a microwave, dishwasher, electric range/oven, and coffee maker, as well as pretty much any kitchen essential you could hope for. WiFi is very fast, with fiber internet, and provided free of charge. Multiple streaming devices are not a problem, though we do encourage you to take a break from technology and connect with nature and enjoy our beautiful setting!

SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS:

Fire Pit

Please contact state of Maine fire officials before having a campfire. Campfires are dependent on burn conditions, and may require a permit. If you have a campfire, please have the hose beside the fire pit and ready to use.

Dogs

We love dogs and welcome them, but please make sure that your dogs stay on the property and do not disturb the neighbors, either by intruding on their property or by barking excessively. Please remove dog waste promptly with the scoop provided near the garbage receptacles and place it in the garbage.

Laundry:

Please DO NOT strip the beds before you leave. Our housekeepers prefer that you leave the bedding in place and allow them to be able to look it over before changing it. This helps us keep everything extra clean for our next guests and helps us identify bedding in need of replacement. All of our bedding and towels are new for the 2026 season. All linens including duvet covers are laundered between every booking.

Please place all dirty towels in the hamper provided.

Dishes:

Please load and start the dishwasher. Dish washing detergent and instructions will be provided in the cottage.

We have lots of plastic cups available for use near the water. For safety purposes, please avoid taking glassware to the dock or waterfront.

Key Codes:

We remotely change the code between each booking for your peace of mind.

Road:

We are very lucky to have one of the best maintained camp roads around the lake. Many neighbors take advantage of it to walk with children and pets. Please respect our neighbors and keep everyone safe by limiting your speed on the road to 15 mph or less.

Safety:

Please no diving off the dock. There are several rocks we are sure you wouldn’t like to meet in that manner.

Quiet Hours:

Please keep noise to a minimum between the hours of 10 PM and 8 AM.

About the host

Host profile image
We are homeowners, not professional hosts. Our home, and its finishes, was designed to be our vacation home, so the quality of the furniture, bedding, and accessories is top-notch. We hope you enjoy it!

Why they chose this property

I grew up visiting Thompson Lake every summer, and enjoy the quiet, natural beauty it provides. Unlike some New England lakes, ours is 80% under-utilised by boat traffic, making it a perfect peaceful place to swim, canoe and paddle board without excessive boat traffic.

Thompson Lake is consistently in the list of cleanest lakes in Maine. It is spring-fed by the Poland Spring aquifer. We have many nested pairs of loons, and several nested pairs of bald eagles as well. Thompson Lake is truly Maine's hidden gem!

Oxford County offers excellent rock hounding opportunities in its many historic quarries. There is a Maine Wildlife Park in the nearby town of Gray, where you can get up close and personal with native Maine wildlife.

The Oxford Casino is just a few miles away, offering gaming opportunities including table games and slots. The nearby Thompson Lake Marina offers boat rentals, which you can safely store on one of our moorings. Hiking and mountain climbing opportunities abound, and we are within an hour of the outlets in Freeport, or the dining scene in Portland. You can boat across the lake to pick up a pizza or a lobster roll at the Outpost market, or sit on the expansive deck, dock, or around the fire pit to enjoy some spectacular sunsets. We have a beautifully stocked game cabinet, with games and puzzles suitable for the whole family.

What makes this property unique

Unlike many lakeside properties, ours sits just 50 feet from the water, with a gentle approach to the lake shore. We have no big hills or staircases. Our sturdy fixed dock with stair access to our sandy-bottomed lakefront makes access easy.

Our drinking water is pristine, from a 285' deep drilled well which we routinely test for purity and safety. Many camps draw water from shallow dug wells, or even from the lake itself, making it a requirement to bring in bottled drinking water. Our water is not only potable, it's delicious!

Our cottage was thoroughly remodelled in 2023, and has a well appointed kitchen with all the appliances and kitchen accessories you should require. All bedding, including duvet covers, is laundered meticulously between guests, so you can move right in with confidence. For guest convenience, there is an upstairs powder room, along with the first floor main bathroom.

If you need to stay connected to work while you are visiting us, there is a very fast WiFi network provided free of charge.
