Westfield Gem

We had a great stay at this property, very clean and a lot of history to this place. Has a Frank Lloyd Wright feel with a lot of art and antiques. Kitchen is modern and awesome. One wish would be for n more comfortable furniture in the sitting/living room (and maybe a large TV) but we made do in the ample bedrooms. Loved the bar area. We hope to be back!

Beautiful retreat

We enjoyed our stay at the Westfield. The property and home are beautiful. The kitchen was stocked with all needed items. Beds were comfortable. Our stay was too short and we are looking forward to returning in the future. I highly recommend this house and with its close proximity to wineries it would be a great destination for a girls trip

Beautiful home and property

Really neat place to stay! The outside spaces were beautiful and relaxing and the kids enjoyed boat rides on the pond. The home was clean and kitchen and bathrooms were well equipped with everything we needed for our stay. We also enjoyed the exquisite artwork though out the house.

A Hidden Gem

Our family vacation in Westfield was very special because of this amazing property! The house is beautifully decorated and maintained and exceeded our expectations. The beds were so comfortable and we enjoyed the well stocked kitchen. We had fun outside peddling the boat on the pond and walking through the maze as well as a roaring fire in the fire pit. The beach at the marina provided hours of fun for the kids! We really enjoyed meeting new friends at local businesses nearby. We would love to return for another visit and make more memories!

Beautiful historic house surrounded by acres of fields, vines and a turtle pond

We had a wonderful family Reunion here. The house was spotless and unique with lots of interesting places to sit and chat and drink coffee. The grounds are stunning and the dogs had a blast running through the fields and around the pond. The owners were very responsive and had some good suggestions for short local adventures. We loved the firepit which was thoughtfully prepared with wood and marshmallow sticks! Altogether a wonderful family Reunion in a very special place.

Family reunion

We had a great time at this very unique and beautiful property. The yard and surrounding landscape was very peaceful and relaxing with vineyards, neighboring wineries, a little pond and plenty of outdoor decks and seating. The home had a very welcoming energy and was very comfortable, our only wish was for more / brighter lighting. We loved exploring the surrounding area and were pleasantly surprised by what western NY had to offer, pristine nature, lakes, wineries and beauty everywhere to be found.

Unique and beautiful home

This is a very special house in a lovely location- it has a delicate electrical system and requires some TLC to stay there. It is beautiful inside and the kitchen is very complete and functional. The bedrooms are each unique and one bedroom bed is a pull out couch. The living room is very dimly lit but there is a fireplace. The owners were responsive to several issues we had and graciously agreed that we could have a dinner party here after a funeral.

Stunning home and amazing hospitality

This was our first VRBO experience and I can't imagine this was anything but the gold standard. Not only was the home gorgeous, and exactly as pictured, but also it was so comfortable. The beds were so comfortable, and every home amenity was provided and then some! Bob and Sheila were great communicators , and we had wonderful exchanges about things to do in the area during our stay. They answered all our questions before we got there and we even arrived to a treat basket and full stocked beverage bar. The modern kitchens and bathrooms were luxurious for us. The grounds were postcard perfect and we enjoyed spending time here nestled in nature. What a great first experience- it would be tough to beat.

A perfect choice for a relaxing vacation

I recently stayed at this home with my wife and kids and four other family members. We were in need of a relaxing week away from the city and this property gave us just that! There is so much to explore and experience on the property (kids loved running the maze and going on the pond) and my dog had the best week of his life running around exploring. There are several options nearby for food and entertainment, but at a nice slow pace. We are not big wine drinkers, but had fun learning about the region and trying several local wines. The owners were great to work with and were very responsive when asking one-off questions. I would highly recommend visiting the area and staying at this property. The home is very cozy, spacious, full of history and interesting tidbits and the kitchen was amazing! We cooked most of our meals at home because of it.

A beautiful place to stay both indoors and outdoors.

First, the home is AS ADVERTISED! As a family that cooks (a lot!), I'm always skeptical about people saying a kitchen has absolutely everything you need for gourmet cooking. Well, this one does and then some. The grill is also fantastic with both propane and charcoal. We all loved the outdoor set ups with multiple areas to take a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and a book and spend some time away from the group. The grounds are beautiful and the fire pit was a favorite spot for all of us. Thanks for sharing your home!

70th Birthday Celebration

This was a wonderful getaway to celebrate Mom’s 70th birthday! The house was spacious for 5 adults and 1 child, and we enjoyed the use of the pedal boat. Despite the current pandemic, we spent our days with local activities, and enjoyed the evenings back at the house sitting on the deck, or on the patio by the waterfall. We did more walking than biking, and only rode them once around the property - we walked up the road for ice cream and walked the gravel road for some exercise since the crop circles weren’t cut. We thoroughly enjoyed the time as a family, and were very happy it all worked out during these uncertain times.

Beautiful Form Over Function

Thoughtful hosts even brought a roasting pan for a Thanksgiving turkey. Well equipped and supplied kitchen. Very spacious house. Extensive grounds are beautifully developed but less usable in the cold off season Beautiful architecture and appropriately furnished, but form was at the expense of comfort. Lots of mission oak furniture which looks great, but becomes uncomfortable to sit in for long. There are televisions in every bedroom, but none in the public rooms. Period light fixtures made for a very dark house a problem for visually impaired. Bedrooms need mirrors.

Good gathering spaces

This home is full of good gathering spaces, inside and outside. Lovely to sit on the front porch chatting and admiring the flowers and hummingbird. The table on the back porch was marvelous for meals. The location, near a brewery/distillery, within walking distance of a farm stand and ice cream stand, and across from a winery was perfect. Could you go across to the winery and pick out a white to go with dinner? The Kitchen is magnificent and the eclectic paintings were fun. The unopenable windows in some upstairs bedrooms made them a bit stuffy. Looks like the owner may be slowly replacing with double-hung, and with the lake breezes that would let the house breathe a bit in the summer.

Relaxing getaway with friends.

My husband and I along with our friends and their 4 boys have been vacationing together for several years. This year we picked New York and Niagara Falls. We live in the country so we wanted to spend our vacation in a home in the country near Lake Erie. This home exceeded our expectations. The owners were wonderful to work with. We enjoyed morning coffee on the back deck . The home and grounds were beautiful. The evening sunsets were priceless.. Walking distance for ice cream. It was a short drive to Lake Erie and you could see the lake just beyond the trees. Wonderful place to relax and enjoy friends. Beautiful wine country area. Unfortunately, we did not have time to visit the wineries in the area. If we ever return to Westfield, we will definitely choose to stay here.

Enjoyable stay in unique country house

Our family (six adults and two small children) greatly enjoyed a long week-end at this uniquely beautiful historic house in a quiet rural neighborhood. The house is filled with harmonious colors, art and furnishings that very much complement the Prairie style architecture. The grounds are lovingly landscaped, with views of vineyards and farms in every direction, a charming pond, several outdoor sitting areas, and wonderful big green fields for the little ones to run around. Even on rainy days (of which we had a couple), it felt easy to enjoy the outdoors from the sunroom, looking out onto beautiful vistas, including grand trees full of birds and trains in the distance. The house is exceptionally clean, the kitchen is superbly equipped, and the game closet and bookshelves were full of great choices for every family member. We especially appreciated Bob and Sheila's warm welcome toward our grandchildren (a pack and play, high chair, and baby gates were at the ready) as well as the owners' evident enthusiasm for sharing their special place. Thank you for a most memorable and fun visit!

Truly a Family Home

In the midst of COVID, my family and I wanted a quarantine-vacation. Bob and Sheila’s house is far from just a rental..you will walk into a historic labor of love that sits on storybook grounds. The home was perfectly equipped with everything: fresh towels, lovely bathrooms, comfy bedding and plenty of space. The Kitchen is another story...it has ruined me from cooking in my own! Bob and Sheila thoughtfully share a kitchen stocked with anything you can think of....truly, don’t bring a thing! My family and I cooked just about every meal together and took advantage of eating on their beautiful dining table, in the sunroom and out on the West deck, overlooking the pond. Each bedroom is charming. My husband and I took the tree top room and just adored the private balcony. There was another bedroom that had a full size bed (I think) along with two small kiddo beds! I’m not sure if they set the smaller beds up just for us but my boys loved it! The home is also filled with wonderful and interesting artwork and books that we really enjoyed. I especially loved Linnea in Monet’s Garden. We had picnics, a campfire, road bikes, pedal boated around the turtle pond, wandered through the vineyard and admired all of the fruit trees. I could go on and on. We cannot wait to stay again. Thank you Bob and Sheila!

About the host

Your host

Host profile image
Sheila and Bob are two retired advertising/marketing professionals who escaped the congestion and stresses of the City to experience the comforts of country living on the shores of Lake Erie Wine Country.

The Westfield House" is just two hours north of their current Pittsburgh residence but, it is worlds away from the everyday stressors of city living.

After your visit you will never want to leave!

Why they chose this property

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT CONNECTION...
The Westfield House (Thonawada Prairie Bungalow) is a century old Prairie Bungalow farm house that was built by O.S. Lang for Buffalo Banker Edgar Taylor and his wife Margaret. In 1909 O. S. Lang had just finished Collaborating with Frank Lloyd Wright on the building of several notable Buffalo N.Y. residences including... the highly acclaimed, Darwin Martin House, The Gardeners Cottage, The Davidson House, and the Heath House when he accepted the offer from Westfield New York residents Charles Welch (juice & Jellies) and Edger Taylor, to move to Western New York to design and build their private residences including "The Chedwel Compound" for Welch and "The Thonawada Bungalow" for Taylor...

The plans were drawn-up by O.S. Lang in a sleek Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie Bungalow style with a low pitch roof and a ribbon of 38 windows surrounding the first floor's cedar shake covered exterior.

As time and fortunes past, Thonawada Bungalow fell into disrepair and was eventually rescued in 2007 by Bob & Sheila who decided not to remodel the home, but rather, restore it back to its original intended country elegance....The House and seven acres of vineyards and artfully landscaped grounds and water features are now available, year round for you and your family and friends to enjoy for a couple days, weeks, or even a month.

What makes this property unique

Combined, you will pick sweet Concord Grapes, apples, pears, cherries, plums, peaches, crab apples, Hickory Nuts, and Butter Nuts… ENJOY Life in the Slow Lane!

After consuming your fill of fresh fruit and nuts, you will venture into our Walking Circles, the largest of which takes you nowhere after a fifteen minute walk from the outer ring and into the center... If you still have some energy left over, we find that many guests pick-up the pace and retrace their steps out of the circle at a more lively pace...I believe the record is about 1 minute to the finish line and the beginning of a new path through Harry's Grove....Named after the woodsman who groomed all of the trees and shrubs on the property a decade ago)
