Castine Cottages are the perfect quiet vacation rental spot with six 2-bedroom cottages overlooking the Maine waterfront! Built in 1952 the family run cottages have their own original and unique charm. For those looking for a quiet, beautiful, and relaxing vacation with nature, this is your spot! Our cabins are very rustic with their old timey charm. If you are looking for new, upgraded, and luxurious, this probably isn’t for you.
Located on top of a hill overlooking the waterfront, our cottages are set up to offer the best views, with a refreshing sea breeze even on the hottest of days. The property also offers a small private rocky beach front for our guests to enjoy. Please note that the long dock seen in some photos on our website and traveler photos is not currently accessible as it was taken out by historic flooding in the winter.
Within one hour of scenic Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Camden, Bangor International Airport, home of the Maine Maritime Academy, Castine has great accessibility. Castine has to be seen to realize what a gem you have found. A beautiful seaside town with a deep historical past where many revolution battles were fought. Castine offers a salt water swimming pool, public beach, and Dyces Head light house, just a few of the places that you just shouldn’t miss.
We have 6 Cottages altogether so please ignore calendar if preferred dates are blocked; email inquiries. Booking 5 nights at a minimum at this time. also please note that children ARE allowed. It’s rustic (!) and could use a bit of repair but the hosts are responsive and helpful. We had everything we needed, the cabin is cozy, the beds very comfortable, and the view is gorgeous!
This property is awesome. It is rustic and very relaxing. The only bummer is that we missed out on the dock set up because it was out of commission due to a storm. Even despite that, this was one of our top 3 family vacations. We used this place as a starting point to get to Acadia but this place was equally memorable. We actually hope to return in the fall, if possible. Alan was very gracious and a fabulous host. He was very accommodating while I worked through the Vrbo app to make the reservation. The kitchen in our cottage was very well appointed and we were able to cook most nights. The screened in porch views were an incredible way to start the morning and end the day.
We really enjoyed our stay at Castine Cottages. They are sometimes described as rustic. The exterior appearance affirms this description but the interior cuts a level higher. The furnishings are comfortable and attractive. The screened porch with two large deeply padded chairs is a great place to relax, overlook the water and observe wildlife in the twilight. The beds are comfortable. The living room furnishings are solid, comfortable and quite adequate. The kitchen is a galley kitchen, mean it is small with space for two adults standing elbows to elbow. Everything needed is there: a four burner stove, refrigerator with freezer unit, toaster oven, microwave, utensils, dishes, etc. There is no dishwasher. Running water is fine., cold water is quite cold (we liked that). There is no TV. The wifi worked fine for us. We stream entertainment to tablets so no TV wasn't noticed. If you expect to sit down for large family meals, you will have to do it outside at the large picnic table. Near the table, is a small grill. Good it you like to cook out.The small village of Castine is nearby with a carryout store. It is a very historic site, one of the oldest continuously occupied European settlements in North America. The Dyce Head light marks the mouth of Penobscot River and the end of Penobscot Bay. There is a lot of Maritime activity to take in.
Alan and Diana have a special place. If you want somewhere where relaxation is the order of the day then these cottages are for you. The local area is very special and our whole stay was perfect
Our stay at Castine Cottages exceeded our expectations! We stayed for two-weeks in one cabin with two dogs and two couples. It was a cozy stay, but exactly what we were hoping for in a change of scenario from city life. The cottages are rustic and cozy, so exactly as we expected from the photos and from our conversations with the hosts, whom we chatted with ahead of time to discuss a few travel details given COVID, as they are very thoughtful in wanting to encourage tourism during this time but also be mindful of their neighbors and community.
The hosts, Alan and Diana, are absolutely wonderful and work so incredibly hard to keep their property tidy, welcoming and bustling! Alan and Diana graciously helped us source the best priced lobster AND hosted a lobster broil for us (SO DELICIOUS!). They even offered to take us out on their boat for a tour of the area.
The cottages are nicely spaced from one another to allow privacy, but also allow friendly neighborly interaction if desired. There were always a few pups running around which our dog loved. The property is also a short walk to Wadsworth Cove Beach (30 min walk, 5 min drive) and a bit further are various trails leading around/to Dyce Head Lighthouse. We spent a few days wading in the water at the beach and taking the pups on hikes through the Withrle Woods. On one run we even saw a black bear (from a safe distance :))
I would absolutely return to the Castine Cottages -- next time renting one cabin per couple to allow a bit more room.
