About this property

Tin mine riverside retreat, log fires, views, wildlife, ruins, pet-friendly

Hidden in 16 acres of woodland, just upstream from the village of Calstock in Cornwall, you'll find the ivy-clad ruins of Okel Tor Mine; a Scheduled Ancient Monument, a National Landscape (AONB), a haven for wildlife and the location of our two romantic retreats - The Smithy and The Count House. These award-winning Grade II listed cottages nestle amongst oak and beech trees but have stunning panoramic views across the River Tamar to the rolling Devon hills the other side. Each cottage has been carefully restored, tastefully decorated and fitted with a log burning stove to create a comfortable and cosy retreat for one or two people.

THE SMITHY. With its forge and workshop, The Smithy at Okel Tor Mine is where ironwork was fabricated and tools maintained. The forge is long gone but The Smithy still retains the feel of its previous industrious life with its vaulted ceiling and timber panelling. Old, discarded iron picks lie abandoned on the veranda - an evocative reminder of the tough life of the tin miner. The Smithy has been lovingly converted to provide comfortable, well-appointed accommodation.

ANTIQUITY AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN ABUNDANCE. Okel Tor Mine lies in the heart of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. As well as exploring our own mine workings and buildings, walk or cycle the Tamar Trails around the Devon Great Consols mine, or take the mine train underground at Morwellham Quay. National Trust properties are always popular with guests. Cotehele House can be reached by a pleasant walk along the river, while Buckland Abbey, Anthony and Lanhydrock are all nearby. The Tavistock Guildhall Heritage Centre is also well worth a visit.

GREAT WALKING. A short walk right from your cottage door takes you through the old mine workings and back along the river, while a stroll into Calstock follows the wetlands wildlife reserve. The Tamara Way coast-to-coast path passes right through Okel Tor Mine and the spectacular views from Kit Hill are nearby too. Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are less than 30 minutes’ drive and lovely Cornish beaches not much further. We also have a warm boiler house to dry boots and waterproofs.

DOGS ARE WELCOME. It’s a doggy heaven here - lots of great walks right from the door, a river to swim in plus dog-friendly pubs and a café in the local village. We provide throws for the sofas, a washdown for muddy paws and somewhere to dry towels and rugs.

FRIENDS OF OKEL TOR MINE. Returning guests comprise over 60% of stays at Okel Tor Mine - a statistic that speaks for itself!

Perfect Cosy Getaway

Our stay was gorgeous - the cottage is cosy, calm, and just right for two. We visited in the winter and thoroughly enjoyed the log burner, though to be honest it was warm enough without! The views accross the Tamar are lovely, and it's a great place to explore on foot. Nick made us very welcome, and we thoroughly enjoyed the tranquility and silence that the cottage provides. The perfect getaway if you need to just stop for a bit!

Okeltor mine is a real slice of paradise!

We have stayed at the mine several times over the last 10 years but this was the first time we stayed in the Smithy. It is a well equipped cottage, warm and comfortable with everything you need to make it a great stay. It's perfect for a romantic break or just as a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of life. The setting is idyllic and the dogs absolutely loved it. Nick is the host with the most and is so welcoming and helpful. I can't recommend this place highly enough.

About the host

Hosted by Jon Tully

Host profile image
We are Jon and Jenny Tully. We met at London University and have worked in various roles in shipping and the food industry respectively, before joining forces to run a boarding house in an independent school. On leaving the school Jon took a year out to complete a traditional wooden boat building course in Lyme Regis.

Being custodians of Okel Tor Mine is a privilege; working with Historic England, Natural England and Tamar Valley National Landscape to preserve this exceptional and delightful place. We love hosting guests are always happy to give a guided tour of the old mine ruins.

Why they chose this property

When we found Okel Tor Mine, we had been looking for somewhere really special for several years and we knew that it was perfect for us as soon as we saw it. As well as the unique history, we were drawn by the beautiful location as we both love the outdoors – we sail, kayak, ride, and walk. Jenny is a riding instructor, and Jon is an RYA instructor.

We live on site in the old boiler house, so we're on-hand to answer any questions and we'd be delighted to tell you more about the mine's history. Otherwise, we'll leave you in peace to enjoy your holiday!

What makes this property unique

Okel Tor Mine is a Scheduled Ancient Monument and lies within both The Tamar Valley National Landscape (AONB) and The Cornish Mining World Heritage Site. Its two cottages are Grade II listed and the mine is an SSSI (site of special scientific interest.) Okel Tor Mine is somewhere different and without doubt one of the most unusual places to stay in Cornwall.
