19th century farmhouse on a hill between magical valleys and Sienese hills
The farmhouse was bought and renovated as a manor house, today it is inhabited by us approx. 10 days a month. Originally it was an ancient barn with pigsty, abandoned for 40 years and invaded, as is all around, by brambles. It was renovated in 1998, using green building techniques, by the owner ten days a month. It is 450 meters away. high and 5 km. from the medieval village of Casole; 3 km of asphalt road and 2 of dirt road that passes through the woods and other farms. The utmost attention was paid to ensure that every detail and material respected the exact characteristic of Tuscan antiquity and architecture; any non-originating material has been recovered from demolitions of coeval homes. The hand-made bricks called 'bastardoni', as outsized, forming part of the large column that supported the roof of the barn, were reused for the slits of the large windows and as a complement to the fireplace and the steps of the house. The entire farmhouse, with terracotta floors, the travertine staircase, up to the bedroom door, comes from a 18th century villa. For the care and the particularity of the restructuring the magazine 'Case di Campagna' of Di Baio Editore has published a service. Entering the automatic gate there is a small parking lot, a path of oaks and holm oaks accompanies the house that seems crouched on the farmyard, where an umbrella brings coolness to a relaxing corner where in the morning you can have breakfast and in the evening have dinner while watching the enchanting sunset on the 'montagnola' of Volterra and the glare of the setting sun on the windows of Casole, perched on the hill opposite. All around a lawn garden with olive trees, oaks, holm oaks and cypresses, hedges of viburnum, laurel, and then rose, lavender and broom in profusion, there is also a small orchard and the tool shed, the small workshop and woodshed. The stairs with the sleepers of the rails lead around the house and a small staircase leads to the pond with its aquatic turtles and tree frogs cheering with their concerts. The view is spectacular, almost magical towards evening! The entrance door leads to a room with exposed beams that includes on the right bookcase and TV area and on the left another bookcase with sideboard and objects of the time that was of grandmothers and great-grandmothers; as everywhere in the farmhouse, the silver objects are deliberately left with its oxidation. The cozy living room is in front of a fireplace with the supporting beam made from an old olive mill yoke, the wood is contained behind an ancient Thai grating; on the bottom there is the dining area with the tabletop made with an ancient Chinese panel. Then there is a small bathroom with a washbasin of 600, for the window that brings light has also been used here a Thai grating. The whole house has been intentionally created with the aim of maintaining the flavor and patina of time unaltered. The kitchen, which is also very welcoming, has a fireplace for grilling, a wood oven and a dishwasher; a large old plate rack collects the pots. The cooking racks, as well as the kitchen countertops, were made with old oak mangers that still bear the holes where the cows were tied. The travertine sink is dug in a single block, next to it, an old caratello for the collection of olives now collects .... the garbage!, even in the kitchen there is a Thai window that, with the grating, allows you to see the entrance. On the back in the pantry there is the microwave, the electric oven, the toaster, the x food scale, and the wafel grid, plus brooms, pallets and electric broom with battery charger. Going down the stairs on the landing there is a storeroom for sunbeds, cushions and binoculars to admire the enchanting stars. At the bottom of the stairs there is the study with internet connection, a sitting room and a closet for guests; both this environment and the bathroom have a vaulted ceiling. This area can be used for the 5th and 6th bed. You then enter a traditional double room with a sitting area, exposed beams and, in case of need, you can add a cot for children. The other double room has a 'French' bed with a sitting area and is very special because, in addition to the beams and steps of the adjacent staircase, there are two beautiful arches and a niche with a dressing table that accesses the basement turned into a shoe rack, two built-in wardrobes; in this room one of the folding beds can be placed and where there is a chest of drawers available for guests. The doors that originally were the access of the pigsty have been transformed into romantic double lancet windows that illuminate the two double bedrooms. There is also a large bathroom with tub and shower with the particularity of a 800 dentist's table, the revolving drawers still smell of cloves! All this part of the house has the switches that have the possibility to eliminate the current from the walls if one were to suffer, during the night, of geopathy (negative reaction to electromagnetic fields); you must therefore pay attention to turn off or turn on the illuminated switches because they determine the lighting or not of the bulbs. Coming out of the study at the back of the house there is a pergola in wattle where you can dine on the old and large work table with long benches sheltered from the sun and surrounded by nature, among lemons, rose bushes, cypresses and laurel, there is a barbecue that allows grilled .... cooked and eaten! There is also a small lounge where you can talk or read a good book. Water is supplied by a source for use in toilets, dishes, dishwashers and washing machines, etc. while water to drink and cook is provided free in bottles. The surroundings are very suggestive and suitable for beautiful walks even on the paths that, in addition to the olive groves, cross the forest that surrounds the farmhouse. For reservations of more than 4 guests, a personalized discount will be applied. Cleaning and linen change are weekly.
