About this property

Scottish Highland Holiday Cottage in idyllic loch-side setting

This Scottish holiday cottage is set in stunning west highland scenery on the Morvern side of Loch Sunart facing a mountain called Beinn Resipol. We rent it to holiday guests from April to the end of October, minimum seven nights and always starting on a Saturday. What it offers is unique: a place where time has stopped.
Sleeping arrangements are flexible. One’s lonely, nine’s a crowd but possible if some of you are small. The cottage is cosy, comfortable and well kept. There’s electricity, a fine bath and separate loo, but little has changed inside and out since the mid-18th century. Iron-coloured water comes from the burn and we drink it happily but we advise guests to use bottled water to be absolutely safe. There’s heat from the kitchen rayburn which is now run on electricity but there’s no central heating. The sitting room has a wood burner but there’s no television. If you want to watch a film, bring a laptop. You may bring a lap-dog or big dog too; also wellies, wet-weather gear, sun cream, midge repellent, bikes, binoculars, buckets and spades – even a light boat that you can carry to the water’s edge.

From 2018 - for guests that have booked after 29 November 2017 (when the regime changed) - guests are no longer required to do their own caretaking. That is to say that the price they pay for the week includes the work put in by Pat who will do the changeovers between guests - laundering the sheets, making beds and cleaning (although that is not a licence to leave the cottage dirty). Formerly, and continuing in 2018 for those who booked before 29 November 2017, the requirement was to bring one's own linen (sheets, pillow cases, duvet covers, towels). Now all you need worry about is your towels.

What else can we tell you? Mobile reception is not particularly good; sometimes you have to walk away from the house and a little up the road before you pick up a signal. However, there is a telephone which also carries fast broadband - a recent concession to modern life. We rent Keepers Cottage in weekly blocks, from Saturday to Saturday - therefore guests leave on the end Saturday usually no later than 10.30 am. One of the owners will normally phone you at least once during the week to see if you are happy and to address any problems you might have. It is a good idea to bring staple foods and provisions although there are two good general stores in Strontian which is about five miles away - useful for topping up. Petrol and diesel are also available in Strontian but the prices make motorway services look cheap! Best not to arrive with an empty tank.

Wonderful stay
We stayed in the cottage 24 years ago and loved it. It has not changed much. This is the charm of the place. The cottage is situated in a quiet setting on Loch Sunart and after exploring all day was a nice place to relax and unwind. Our host Charlie was great. We had a water issue and it was handled straight away. I hope to return soon. A week was to short.

Character property in amazing location.
Remote cottage on loch shore, surrounded by beautiful tranquil , scenic countryside. Lovely views, own beach. Fantastic cosy lounge, with wood burner. Sit in the window and look out for wildlife , including sea otters and seals. We loved the property and this part of Scotland is so quiet and unspoilt. We definitely recommend it.

Magical place
I am not using the word ‘magical’ idly. Keeper’s Cottage is a dream of a one off - beautifully secluded and private and seeming almost to have a loch to itself. The cottage has a sympathetically artistic feel, a little scuffed at the edges maybe but comfortable, appealing and practically and handsomely equipped. We all loved it and felt a real wrench leaving. Wholeheartedly recommend.

A little piece of heaven
Wanted an off the grid, away from it all week and this place ticked all our boxes. A step back in time, an abundance of walks, wildlife, magnificent scenery, excellent fishing, topped with absolute peace and tranquility. Local hospitality, especially at the Stontian Hotel was superb. Seafood Paella a treat. The Emerson family have an amazing bolt hole of which we are very envious. We will be back but I suspect we will have other family members in tow.

About the host

Hosted by Charlie Emerson

Host profile image
The cottage is owned by five siblings - the Emersons - all of whom come and stay here up to three or more times a year. At the beginning of the season, in late March, all or some of us come up for a few days of intensive maintenance and repair work. At the end of the season, in early November, we return to assess what we need to do in the following spring and do a thorough tidy in preparation for closing the house down for the winter. Liddesdale is much loved by all of us and co-ownership focuses and binds us together as a family.

Why they chose this property

Liddesdale has always been special. Its unspoilt nature and the beauty of its surrounds, its exceptional sunsets on silver water occurring late at night in the summer, make it a place to restore inner peace and good health.

What makes this property unique

Alongside the views, the cosiness and the charm of yesteryear, there are not infrequently stags in the garden - one or two of whom seem almost tame. We have a pet stag called Derek who stops there for weeks on end sometimes.
