About this property

Okau Station Smoko Room

If it is a beach holiday that you are looking for then this is the place for you. A comfortable place for your family and friends to enjoy New Zealand’s special wild coastal charm. You could be diving for paua, crayfish or surfcasting, all of this only a short walk away. Castlepoint is only a 10 minute drive away, walk up to the lighthouse or walk up to Castle Rock.
The Smoko Room is attached to our semi-working woolshed. Ping pong table if the weather is not the greatest or just relax with a book.
2 bedrooms with open plan living, views of the ocean while lying in bed. Plenty to do for all.
Accommodates 7. It is a semi working woodshed, so does have the sheep smell.
Please bring your own sheets and towels.

A Rustic Gem by the Beach

Okau Station Smoko Room is perfect for a relaxing escape. Having the added bonus of a semi working woolshed, complete with a pool table and ping pong table, added a cool element for our teens.Just a 2-minute walk to the beach, the location is peaceful and private, ideal for those seeking a break from the crowds. The Smoko Room itself is cozy and full of personality. We loved it! And being able to bring our dog was fantastic—it made the stay even more special.If you peace and simple pleasures, this place is a gem!

Loved staying here. Your can't get more rural than staying in a self contained flat next to a working wool shed. Easy walk down to the beach with sheep, fantails and kingfishers to keep you company

Perfect slice of country

We held a workshop in the woolshed and the smoko room and it was rugged and country and fun. There are heaps of couches in the woolshed to have a great gathering and the beds are comfy and the fire keeps everything warm in the smoko room. Was a lovely stay.

Lovely rustic hidden gem

A quiet peaceful getaway was needed and thats what we got at Okau station beach retreat. Away from the crowd, on a farm with a lovely beach and privacy. We were treated to wild deer at nighttime and a relaxing chilled time, thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Thank you.

Switching off

We enjoyed the charm of the woolshed and stock yards, we’ve recently said goodbye to the dry stock industry of 20 years so it was a nice way to spend family time in familiar settings which made our visit special. It has everything you need, my 20 month old daughter had lots of fun. We all did. Feeling grounded, rested and ready for 2025. Such a cool way to spend Xmas. We’d like to thank our hosts for having us.

Amazing little gem

Quite basic but a gem, the manager and staff were very kind and helpful. I wrongly assumed that linen and towels were provided and it wasn't, Kim provided me with some very quickly. Very grateful to have had a slice of paradise.

Peace and quiet in the remoteness

We loved our stay at Mataikona. It was so quiet and peaceful and the view amazing. Our young pup loved it too especially the short walk to the beach. He loved running around in the sand. The only thing I didn’t realise when booking is the bathroom was outside (totally modern but just have to go outside to get to it). Being pregnant and quite cold it was the only downside for me but that is mainly on my part for being pregnant and needing the loo so often. But the location made up for it! There is no wifi (that we found) which to me was perfect as it allowed us to disconnect and fully recharge :)

ANZAC weekend motorbike adventure

A beautiful spot just 10 mins from busy castlepoint with the beach just a short stroll away . The accomadation warm and everything you need with a great wood fire to snuggle up to . Wifi and TV available but very quiet and peaceful to just be !

Great views, close to sea

We enjoyed our weekend and the weather was great. Close to the sea but the back needs a good clean. Mattress on the bed was past it and we didnt realise from the reading that you have to step outside onto the porch to get to the bathroom. Hot water was a problem, very hard to get the gas califont to kick in, host said they have been having problems and it is due to be serviced. Overall a it is a bach and it is attached to a woolshed but the site is good.
