Carriage House under Live Oaks In Historic Downtown Beaufort with Patio Garden

This lovely South Carolina unit called Sweetgrass, in downtown Beaufort, is on the street level of the carriage house one block from the Beaufort River. It has two bedrooms, one queen bed and one small full bed and one bath (connected to each bedroom), hardwood floors throughout, cable TV, and a fully equipped kitchen. Relax on the covered porch and furnished patio surrounded by 100 year old oak trees draped with Spanish moss and lovely gardens.
This carriage house, recently brought back to life after many years of neglect, sits next to our home, Craven House. It truly is the best location in Beaufort, surrounded by stately mansions and rich history, allowing one to walk to restaurants, shops, museums and the waterfront park by the marina. It is an easy drive to Paris Island, the Sands beach in Port Royal and Hunting beach on the ocean.
Linens, including beach towels, are included. Household items/appliances include microwave, Kurig coffee maker, high-definition television, gas range and electric oven, cookware, disposal, fridge, pop-up toaster, internet connection, hairdryer, iron and board, dishes, tea, coffee, toilet paper, paper towels and soap. NO SMOKING IS ALLOWED IN THE UNIT OR ON THE PROPERTY ANYWHERE.
Must be 25 yrs old + to rent. **Children under age 12 are not allowed.

The driveway provides one parking space for Sweet Grass guests. There is also close by parking on the street. We love pets, but are unable to accommodate them. Thank you for understanding.

Exceptional charming Beaufort stay

Lovely accommodations. Everything we needed, including items we didn’t know we would need... Such as beach tote and beach towels. This was our second stay at this location and we will be returning for sure! Ellen and Mike are the perfect hosts. The location is within walking distance to everything along the waterfront and the historic district.

Heavenly Place

The property is awesome, the family that owns and operates it is wonderful and the location is perfect. Cannot say enough great things about our stay. The grounds are beautiful and the unit we stayed in is perfect for three adults. It is comfortable and completely equipped - everything with a perfect touch of "southern" hospitality. We had a wonderful time at the Carriage House. The location was perfect for exploring downtown restaurants and sites. The beautiful courtyard was a wonderful place to enjoy a coffee, read a book or have a discussion. We would definitely go back . The owners were very helpful is we ever needed anything.

Beautiful Beaufort

My sister and I were first timers in Beaufort, SC. We stayed at the gorgeous carriage house at the corner of Craven and Newcastle streets. The housing was more than we even expected—spotlessly clean, beautiful antique furnishings, comfortable beds, AC worked great, and beautifully appointed, including some of the host’s original artwork. We can’t wait to return!!

Wedding Weekend 10/15/22

This is such a beautiful location and property! The owners provide an immaculate and lovely decorated rental property! My daughter and her bridesmaids rented both units for her wedding weekend. The space and location were absolutely perfect for walking or driving the golf cart to locations downtown! A safe and lovely rental hosted by gracious owners! Just lovely! Both units provide gorgeous and relaxing interiors!

We will be back next year (3rd time). Do wish it had 2 things: First - cable TV ( Couldn't get much of anything on a new TV and couldn't cast to it, watched my iPad mostly .... No ball games), and 2: a grab bar in the shower for us old people.

Perfect location and lovely hosts!

My sister and I stayed in this pretty updated carriage house just a few blocks from town. We were on the first floor there is another separate 2 bedroom on the second floor. Each have their own front porch, with access to the patio shown in the photos. Ellen and her husband were very accommodating and made sure we had everything we needed. The beds were comfortable as was the entire space with nice antique period furnishings. We will definitely book this carriage house again! Many thanks!

The Ideal Place to Stay

The location is perfect! My husband and I took advantage of the dining and breathtaking views along the waterfront within a couple of blocks from our unit. I also enjoyed walking across the draw bridge as the sun was rising; I don't know how much exercise I got because I was so busy taking pictures! The Seagrass unit is an ideal mix of vintage decor with modern amenities. The beautiful four posted bed and wardrobe takes one back in time. The owners have thoughtfully planned every tiny detail to add to the comfort and convenience for the guests - a variety of coffee pods and condiments as well as modern appliances in the kitchenette, toiletries in the bathroom, a beach bag with beach towels, even a wide selection of books and reading material! My husband and I look forward to planning our next trip to this property!

Don't Miss This Place

My friend and I went to Beaufort to have a relaxing weekend. The cottage was perfect. We walked to breakfast, lunch, and dinner because town is two blocks away. The waterfront with tables and walkways is beautiful as is walking the streets looking at the beautiful homes. Mike and Ellen are so hospitable. We sat on their porch for an afternoon chat one day. The cottage is perfect size for the two of us. They had Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu for you to choose from if you were home. Every detail was thought of and it was exceptionally clean. Don't forget to eat at Lost Local, Old Bull Tavern, Palms, and Rain and Bagel. It is a wonderful little town and the Carriage House contributed to a perfect getaway. Also, say hello to Kip, the very friendly cat!

Excellent. Perfect. 10/10. Wonderful. How many ways can we express our appreciation to Ellen and Mike for hosting us in their wonderful property nestled under the oaks dripping in Spanish moss in the perfect location in historic Beaufort? First of all, this couple is truly amazing! They care so much and genuine hospitality runs through their veins. Second, this property is very special because they have created an authentic Beaufort experience. Undoubtedly, this environment added to our enjoyment of sweet downtown. Third, you can walk all over…to meals, to sunrise and sunset over the water, to the swings, to shopping, to treats, to watch the swing bridge open as sailboats pass through and more! Stay here! We plan to stay here again…and the sooner, the better!

When Mike and I purchased Craven House, it had been neglected for many years. After a lot of hard work it is now reborn. It truly is a rich piece of history, and we love living in this South Carolina coastal town with our Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bonny Blue.
Mike is a retired architect currently involved in Beaufort city and county boards. Ellen is a retired portrait painter. Vacations from Atlanta down to Beaufort every summer to visit family, we bought this property because of our love for architecture, history and Beaufort itself. Ellen's family roots are in South Carolina, so it is like coming home to stay.

Why they chose this property

The Carriage House on Craven is central to all that is happening in Beaufort. During the many yearly festivals, parking is not easy to find in town. Just stay at the carriage house, leave the car and the festivals are a block away. Meander through one-of-a-kind shops on Bay Street and enjoy fresh local seafood in Beaufort's unique restaurants. If you don't want to eat out, a fully fitted kitchen is ready for you.

What makes this property unique

Set back from the street, the patio is a quiet place to sit and visit with friends or have a romantic dinner. Surrounded by historic homes and churches built in past centuries, one is taken back into the 19th century Old South. We live on the property and are at your beacon call anytime you need anything.
