I knew when the guests arrived that they were disappointed that there is no air conditioning. Coming from a hot climate they may consider it normal, but Victoria is blessed with a temperate climate and only some years are there a few days in summer where it would be nice to have. We do provide strong fans. These guests have visited Victoria before and were aware of our climate so if air conditioning was essential for them they really should have checked before booking. Nowhere on the listing does it state that I must confirm I do not have it. We get very few bugs in Victoria so have never seen the need to cover our heritage windows with screens. I do maintain a contract with a pest control company to spray the house and grounds quarterly and they are on call should there be any issues. We do not have a lock on the inside door of the guest suite as this is our home and we need to ensure that we have access in the case of an emergency. The front door has a double lock system. The “stranger who came in at 3:47 a.m.” was my husband after letting the dog out. When we opened business 25 years ago BC Tourism approved us and requested that we have signs in the bedrooms stating emergency exits, which we have. I am not aware of many residences that have fire escapes from their upstairs bedrooms. I regret that the comforter was not as clean as I would wish. Previous guests had left marks and bleach stains that I was unable to remove. I have purchased a new set. Sheets are constantly being replaced. This is a rental suite and not all guests are as careful as we would wish. If we were to replace every item with the slightest stain it would be a monthly occurrence. After every set of guests we take the spot remover to the carpets and upholstery. The microwave/convection oven is not old and stained, although not as pristine as my own, and the instruction booklet on its use was right beside it. There is also a ceramic top stove. These guests stated they broke a bowl (fiesta ware) and left me a melamine bowl in exchange, which I shall donate to charity. The sofa was very expensive and purchased for its flexibility as a base for a double bed, and not for the comfort of someone snoozing on it. The two armchairs and cushions were purchased five weeks before these guests checked in (from a reputable furniture store!) and were selected for their comfort. The driveway is narrower than we would prefer but there is plenty of room to manouvre, as 25 years of guests can attest. I appreciate that some people may be spatially challenged and that it is more difficult for them to navigate. There is some on street parking without time restrictions available if the driveway proves too difficult. Yes, we will repaint the line where there is a step and hope future guests will not trip. Neither bathroom has an opening window but each has a strong fan. I do wish these guests had expressed their concerns to us directly. Most would have been immediately addressed. They were always very pleasant and gave no indication of any issues, other than the air conditioning and questions about mosquitos, which are rare to non-existent in our neighbourhood.
