Renovated Mill Overlooking Portree Bay, Isle Of Skye
Built over 200 years ago, the house is the main part of Portree's former grain mill on the edge of the village. Above a burn, flanked by beech trees, it is close to the shore and commands fine views across to the Isle of Raasay. Portree is an ideal base for all Skye's attractions: walking; sailing; climbing; wildlife and bird watching. Equally, you can walk straight from the house into the hills or into the village for a lovely meal. The accommodation is flexible, with two bedrooms (one ensuite) on the ground floor and a studio at the top of the building (with a WC). The house is built on three floors linked by a spiral staircase. The middle floor is a very attractive open plan living area with the original mill stone. It has recently been fully renovated and redecorated, including installation of an eco-friendly heating and ventilation system. There is off-street parking beside the building.

The property was clean, tastefully decorated, and provided everything we could think of needing during our 6 day stay. It was just about a 5 minute walk to shops but far enough distance to be in a quiet neighborhood. Finlay was wonderful and knowledgeable, providing us with information about the history of the old mill and town upon our arrival. We cooked several meals and had all the cookware needed for this. The puzzles/games were an enjoyable bonus to relax with after long days hiking. It is definitely one of the best places we've stayed and we wholeheartedly recommend it!
Extraordinary and spacious family house with view of the bay
Fully equipped kitchen with a big Rangemaster cooker and oven, very comfortable beds (a very nice 1.80 m wide bed in the master bedroom), 2 bathrooms with a toilet each, plus 1 additional toilet, lovely designed living spaces - we really enjoyed spending a week at the old mill!
We really loved the house. Finlay is very kind and the house is very spacy. We really liked the location since it is close to the restaurants and bars but it is still very quiet.
We had a wonderful stay. The house is in a perfect location for exploring Skye. On a quiet street with a beautiful view yet a short walk into town with a nice trail also a short walk away. The house was one of the most tastefully decorated I’ve ever rented, and the host was helpful and communicative. House was also very well stocked. I recommend this rental most highly.
Great location - in the middle of Portree yet still quiet
We enjoyed our stay a lot. The house is just perfect. Warming, spacious and quiet and still only a view yards towards the centre of Portree. The landlord has welcomed us very friendly and kept in touch throughout the stay for any questions we may have.
We always travel in a large group and the mill is just right for that. The first floor is a large open space with kitchen, dining area and living room. We have stayed at the mill several times and it has been always great.
My wife and I prefer older, character vacation stays. This property is an old mill that has been carefully refurbished. The ground floor includes a master bedroom with ensuite, a second bedroom with bunkbeds, and a bathroom with shower. A spiral staircase takes you to the first floor which provdes a spacious living area, kitchen and dining area. The staircase continues to the second floor where there is a third bedroom and bathroom. This bathroom does not have a shower or bath. A word of caution... the ceiling on this bathroom is very low. I am 6'3 and smacked my head a few times before I learned to pay attention. The dining area is on a small riser, maybe 2 inches, and I stubbed my toe once or twice before - again - I learned to pay attention. The house has a private driveway and parking... extremely important on Skye! The hosts, Finlay and Lucy popped over for a visit to show us around and chat about the area. This was much appreciated. We would not hesitate to rent this lovely property again.
The property was very clean and very well appointed. It had lots of character, plenty of space and was in a great location for easy walking access to Portree. Finlay was a great host with attention to detail, very responsive and helpful. We would highly recommend this property and would certainly go back.
Beautiful, comfortable house in an excellent location
The Old Mill has been beautifully and thoughtful converted to created an extremely comfortable and cozy place to stay. Furniture, fittings, fixtures, and the kitchen are high quality throughout and the space is well designed to provide a great place to relax, cook, sleep, and generally stay. Location is excellent, right on the edge of Portree so you can walk to the shops, cafés, and sports centre, but in a wooded area next to a stream with superb views. I cannot recommend this property enough, we can't wait to return!
The photos don’t it justice. Much nicer and larger than it appears in photos. I love the history of the building. Findlay was very kind and helpful. We really appreciated the welcome basket. One of the best VRBO that we have ever stayed at
A fantastic location, a short walk to downtown. Finlay met us when we arrived and showed us around. We had some fruit and goodies left for us. It nicely furnished and very comfortable. Would highly recommend.
We did the Statdust Whale Trail boat tour. We would highly recommend that.
Situated right at the edge of Portree, guests can walk to any number of excellent restaurants. The property is spacious and well-furnished. We loved the master bedroom with an American King -sized bed. I’d recommend that you book restaurants the day you arrive. Many are closed Sunday and Monday, then super crowded on Tuesday! Roads on Skye are challenging and in a state of disrepair. But lots of beautiful scenery and walks.
We were an extended family of two parents and infant, two teenagers, one dad. Very clean, pretty space. Finlay provided a highchair, and the kitchen was really nicely stocked with a lot of essentials like dishwasher and laundry detergent, but also things like coffee, bread and pastries, basic spices, oils, and even ice cream. The location is just enough away from the center of Portree that it is quiet, but close enough to easily walk to all of the nice cafés and shops. It is also very convenient to the Scorrybreac Trail which is a very nice walk loop above Portree.
We (4 people) spent a wonderful week in the holiday home "Old Mill". Everything was indeed perfect. The location of the house in Portree overlooking the sea is an ideal starting point to explore the many highlights of the island. The house itself is sensational and unique. It is individually and tastefully furnished, offers a lot of space and a more than complete equipment. We would like to thank Lucy and Finlay very much. They were very friendly and warm hosts.
They welcomed us with bread, butter, jam, cakes, fruit and more and supported us with numerous tips.
A special builng (old mill) at an ideal location, 5 min walking from town center, very tastefull furnished and decorated. Parking available (normally a problem near town center) The kitchen is very well equipped and part of a nice and spacious living room. The kitchen has no extractor hood (at least we couldn't find any extractor), which brings the smell of cooking to the open bedroom upstairs. We found a welcome package. We appreciated the visit by the owners and their tips on activities. Don't forget to take a hike on Raasay and a break at Raasay house. The upstairs bedroom has it's own bathroom with a sink and toilet, shower/bath is at the ground floor.
Excellent location and hospitality by the town and sea
Look no further - Finlay’s mill was a phenomenal spot to spend our holiday for an outdoorsy family who appreciates character, charm, and rustic living. The photos don’t do the place justice - it’s spacious, tastefully decorated, quiet, and has a very comprehensive kitchen. The spiral staircase is wide and easy to carry things up and the views from the loft are postcard worthy, and it’s a quick walk to town, the co-op, and the shore. The wood burning stove kept us warm, and dried our clothes from our very wet hikes. Finlay stopped by with an hello and recommendations, and left us with some Scottish treats to share. The house is stocked with games, maps, and books. Our family of four (with two children 4 and 8) give this place a 10/10!
We had a fantastic holiday at the Old Mill. The accommodation really is exceptional, topped off by amazing views of the bay and minutes walk to restaurants and shops. This is our 5th family holiday in Skye and our stay at the Old Mill made it the best yet. We enjoyed every minute of our stay here and will definitely come back again. Thank you!
A VERY special property within walking distance to town!
We have enjoyed our stay at The Old Mill in Portree. The location is perfectly situated to enable walking everywhere into town.
This property is delightful - restored with a sympathetic eye to a modern, high quality unit. It is very spacious, with 2 larger bedrooms and a 3rd room with bunk beds. The bedding is SO comfortable, extra pillows and high quality sheets.
There are views from every window. Top notch fittings and the kitchen is large and done to a high spec.
The photos don’t do it justice. It would be hard to convey the sense of relaxation and luxury this accommodation provides.
Located in a quiet neighborhood, with shops a short walk away. The Scorrabreach Trail is almost on the doorstep.
Local restaurants are all within walking distance.
We have had a fabulous holiday here on Skye, thank you for your gracious hospitality and spectacular accommodation.
Today we hiked the trail from behind the Cuillin Hills Hotel . Beautiful scenery.
We had dinner tonight at Dulse & Brose - a wonderful meal. Just around the corner.
Thanks again for the gracious hospitality, we hope to stay again, soon.
Stunning property, immaculately presented with everything needed for a comfortable stay. Hosts welcomed us just after arrival to check we were settled in ok and offer advice on local trips.
Merci
Ausgesprochen freundlicher Gastgeber. Many thanks Finlay!

About the host
Hosted by Finlay MacLeod
I am a retired teacher living in Edinburgh. My widowed mother lives in Portree and we find the mill a lovely base for family visits or just a break.
Why they chose this property
Lucy and I have family and friends who live in and around Portree and we stay regularly in the mill. It has become in part a family home for us and as well as a conservation project. We have owned Number 1, the Old Mill (an Sean Mhuilean) since 2003. We did a lot of work in 2005 changing the layout of the middle floor and installing central heating. In 2012 we carried out further extensive work with 2 new bathrooms on the ground floor and installed an air source heat pump system complemented by heat recovery ventilation. In the long term we will restore the lime mortar pointing on the outside of the building.
What makes this property unique
The mill and the neighbouring cottages were build in 1805. They appear to be the first buildings erected on Scorrybreac Road and were part of an ambitious programme of building by James Gillespie Graham who was Lord MacDonald’s Superintendent of Works. James Gillespie Graham went on to have a very successful career particularly in Edinburgh. There he was responsible for the lay out of much of the later New Town. Pictures and more information can be seen in the mill.
