This road will give you a succession of breathtaking landscapes. You drive along the stretch of the Argentario coast overlooking the open sea. Besides the beauty of the natural landscape, you can admire the remains of several towers built in the period of Spanish Garrisons.

There are many points where you can stop to take pictures of the places that you will be hard to forget. Details on the road Overview of Porto Santo Stefano.

From pay close attention to the maritime prize which takes place on August 15 in Porto Santo Stefano, partly visible also from the terrace of the house to avoid the crowds that flock to all the neighboring countries.

History of the Palio:

Since 1937 she runs in Porto S. Stephen the Palio Marinaro. It is a race that puts competing four boats, four rowers and helmsman, representing the four town neighborhoods: CROSS, FORTRESS, Pilarella (District of belonging of the villa) and VALLEY. The sea, the colors of the cape, the hard life of fishermen and sailors, the expectations and hopes of those who remain waiting for them on the shore, are well represented by the effort of the four crews and choral participation of the inhabitants of the districts.

The race has very ancient origins. It is said that the same is the re-enactment of the pursuit of a felucca barbaresca to a boat of local fishermen who escaped capture thanks to their skill in vogue. But this is a legend, which by the way, does little tribute to the courage of Santostefanesi. It is quite likely that the origins are many other, back to the time of the Deans and Queen of Spain, whose Promontory was part. To endorse this view, they combine the designs of Ignazio Fabbroni, Santo Stefano Cavaliere that sailed the galleys of the Tuscan team to hunt pirates. The Fabbroni, during his work, he was able to portray the appearance of Porto S. Stephen, in the years 1664 to 1667 and in one of his paintings, on the calm water of the turquoise bay, there are four rowing boat with coxswain and four rowers who seem to have engaged in a race to achieve under the edge of the great ships anchored at wheel.

The Palio can not even descend from this coming and going by dint of rowing between the mainland and ships, to embark sailors, soldiers, officers, water, weapons, goods. A oarsmen practicing coastal fishing, rowing sailing ships were pulled when they remain becalmed. The transition from the working phase to phase play is automatic and natural for many human activities and also for rowing is tripped the same mechanism. The four men who first came to the ground at one time were not satisfied with most of the look satisfied with the "master", but sought the admiration of the girls of the village and in the days of party challenged the other rowers. He was born the "Palio". He was called so quickly. There was talk of spears racing, "Guzzi" and "tartaroni", until 1937 when the municipality of Monte Argentario took on the organization of the race, dictating the rules and regulations of what was called WIN MARINARO DELL'ARGENTARIO.

The guzzi with which it takes place the grabs are exposed as early as 20 days before the stake itself, to be admired.

Arriving by car, since the descent that leads to the village, you can enjoy a fine view of Porto Santo Stefano. The first thing that you will encounter will be the shipyard, where the carpenters refurbish of authentic jewels of the sea. Along the cross sea around the harbor of Valle with sailings to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri, pleasure boats and the fleet; if you arrive in the afternoon there may happen to witness the fresh fish landings.

Once the port begins the beautiful Promenade of the Navigators, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, which leads you to the small port of Pilarella. However before you can go across the street and visit the Aquarium, in which the typical marine environment is rebuilt.

Take back now Promenade, where the many benches facing the sea, allowing you to take a break while enjoying the spectacle of the Gulf of Argentario that "looks" towards Talamone. At the End of the promenade you will arrive in Piazza dei Rioni that overlooks the harbor, we call it the "living room" of Porto Santo Stefano. A must stop in the many bars and restaurants with terrace overlooking the sea at any time of day, from breakfast to after dinner all'apertivo, the relaxed atmosphere of this place gives you some really nice moments. In summer you will have fun also to observe the local children diving repeatedly in the waters of this small port.

After recuperating, go back through the charming alleys and stairways of the old town, to reach the Spanish Fortress. The climb is not long but very steep, so we do not recommend to deal with it during the hottest hours of the day. We anticipate that the view is worth admiring, alone, a visit to this place, is about 300-400 m from the villa connected by a flat road.

Route Overview

This road will give you a succession of breathtaking landscapes. You drive along the stretch of the Argentario coast overlooking the open sea. Besides the beauty of the natural landscape, you can admire the remains of several towers built in the period of Spanish Garrisons.

There are many points where you can stop to take pictures of the places that you will be hard to forget.

The pier

The little beach Moletto is located in Porto Santo Stefano, on the left of the marina Pilarella. It is very easy to reach on foot and is also accessible for the handicapped. The beach is small, but the beach club is not that great. There is also a bar and restaurant right on the seashore. In summer in the waters of this beach is set up a golf polo. It is located 300 m from the villa.

The cove

Beach eponymous hotel which is right behind him. Even the cove is located in the town of Porto Santo Stefano and is easily accessible for everyone. Here you will find the bar, the beach club, a restaurant with terrace overlooking the sea, and also a diving center with guides for observation of seahorses. The seabed is immediately deep (ideal for relaxing swims), however an artificial recess allows even smaller "splashing" in all tranquility. SI located at 250-300 m from the villa.

The Giannella

The Giannella is the pillow north of the Argentario, you see on the right a few kilometers before arriving in Porto Santo Stefano. It is a sandy beach about 8 km, with beach facilities, free beach, bars and restaurants by the sea. The sea slopes down very gently and therefore makes this very suitable for small children Beach. To access the beach you can just go in the bush pillow to meet with several access points. This beach is well suited for sailing sports. Finally, remember that behind the beach is a pine forest which covers almost the entire length in Tombolo.

Pozzarello

The Pozzarello has its beach made of small pebbles and sand, is located below the traveling road. Access is located in several places easy to identify and it is also suitable for disabled people. There is a beach bar and restaurant but most of the beach is free. This is a very quiet and suitable place to relax, also when there is sirocco wind, the sea is very clear and calm as a "table".

Cala Grande

You can admire the panoramic road, when after a curve will appear in all its beauty. It has to stop with photos for all the tourists who pass by this road. Being sheltered from many winds is also the busiest falls from boats. The access to the identified on the right in the middle of a long straight where a path descends quite steeply. Laciate the car along the scenic route, get off and walk along the path for about 500 meters. After the first 100 meters the path along what was an ancient ditch said Cauto, then pass through a green beautiful stain composed of tall oaks, and slowly, between the branches of the trees, you will see the clear waters of this cove . The route is not very challenging, however it is not suitable for elderly and very young children. There are three beaches in this bay and consist of pebbles. The bottom is beautiful, so great for snorkeling and relaxing swims.

Porto Santo Stefano - Vacanza all'Argentario
Grazie Roberto Mandelli
