PUAKO BEACH: an eclectic, TRANQUIL and HISTORIC oceanfront community.
We have a two story residential home, located across the street from the turquoise clear waters of the Pacific ocean. Our guest apartment is on the ground floor with its own private entrance through a garden atmosphere into a large screened in porch with plants, table and couch. The apartment is 1000sf with a King size bed with soft bamboo sheets and air-conditioning in the bedroom with additional cooling fans throughout. The apartment is ideal for three adults or two adults and two kids, max. Four adults is not recommended as the pullout couch bed in the living room is not really designed for two adults, in my humble opinion. The back door leads to a bucolic outdoor porch setting with a breakfast table, birds galore, a barbecue and a small fenced in yard with beautiful views of adjacent wild State land and magnificent Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa and the Kohala Mountains beyond. No fire engines, no police car sirens, nothing but a peaceful atmosphere. We provide our guests with snorkel gear, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach umbrella and a wonderful breakfast spread (heavy on fresh fruit). With advance notice, we are happy to arrange rentals for any water equipment that we don't have, including kayaks, paddle boards, surf boards, and scuba gear. Bicycles are also available for rentals. The large living/dining area includes a small kitchen island and has been remodeled with new wood flooring, paint and carpets. It is quite lovely, comfortable and inviting; a very homey, cool and spacious environment with soft paint colors. Some say its more spacious than the pictures show. The air-conditioning in the bedroom and fans in the other rooms take care of any heat issues.
Thank you.

Wonderful stay! Anything I asked for was responded to timely. The yard was beautiful. The appliances were very nice with fancy coffee pot, hot water pot, and toaster being very nice. Shower was nice and roomy. Shampoo and soaps provided. Nice food stocked both in fridge and pantry.
Very charming and peaceful place. Loved feeding the birds and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. Bailey is very helpful and available to answer any questions. Would definitely return.
Had a wonderful time. Close to everything we needed at Kohala. Spent the days diving, snorkelling the local beaches and sampling the great bars and restaurants nearby. We are hoping to return soon again

Very quiet and pleasant property. Two very pleasant outside sitting areas. Walking distance to several beach access points. Well-stocked kitchen and AC in the bedroom.
We had a great time at Puako and around. We were welcomed with a delicious fruit plate ! Many wonderful beaches. Watching turtles just few steps away. My daughter had fun feeding birds every morning and afternoon, amazing how colorful and pretty ! Thank you for hosting us.

Thank you Judwiga. It was a real pleasure meeting the three of you and it’s a pleasure knowing you were able to take advantage of all Puako has to offer. Please come back. Any time. You were terrific guests!💐
Lower level apartment in lovely garden setting and ocean breezes. Birds and geckos abound! Spacious living area, King bed, and screened patio. Very comfortable and gracious, responsive hosts.
I was completely blown away with the amount of thought and preparation that Bailey and Baki put into out stay. They really go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need. Their accommodations felt more like a home away then it did a home rental. Also the location was so nice with a walk to a beautiful beach, a bit rocky but there are sandy areas, but so pretty.

Thank you Rachel, for your kind words. It’s so nice to know guests appreciate our efforts on their behalf. We loved having you.
Wonderful on all accounts. The listing info is 100% accurate. Perfect size for 2 adults. Generous host - that fruit plate was to die for! Close to Hapuna beach (best beach imo) - get there early though. Walk across the road to beach access points to see tide pools and resting turtles. The birds are plentiful. We will stay again.

We had a wonderful week staying at Bailey's house in Puako. Puako itself is a quiet, sedate neighborhood--perfect for quiet mornings and afternoons. Proximity to the beach is stellar, whether you use the Puako beach access points or take a short drive to Beach 69 or Hapuna. The house itself was perfect for us (a family of four, with two young children): we loved sitting on the back porch watching the myriad birds at the feeders and the wild pigs in the back fields. The kitchen is well-stocked--better equipped with staples and pots and pans than many places we have stayed. Wonderful place, highly recommended!
The apartment is spacious, comfortable and homey. This is not a high end modern experience, but a cozy and relaxed retreat. The bed is very comfy, bathroom shower newish, and the apartment is very clean. The proprietor, Bailey, is gracious and kind. We felt more like his personal guest than a renter. A lovely experience.

Lovely and spacious
This property was so much more lovely and spacious than the pictures could show. Fully stocked fridge with beautiful and yummy fruit salad was an unexpected and really generous addition. We appreciated the screened in porch, all the ceiling fans and the bedroom AC at night. Definitely plan to return when we can!
A lovely & comfortable home away from home. Love, love, love the attention to details. The fresh fruit awaiting us in the fridge was so kind and amazingly delicious. We have stayed many places on the big Island and this was my favorite. You can hear and see the ocean from the front window! Perfect location for walking along the shoreline path and to many beaches. The screened lanai was a tropical oasis. Our host Bailey was so kind and communicative. We would love to stay here again.

Thank you for such a kind review. I do enjoy trying to make my guests comfortable and at home. You made my day. 🌹🌴🌹
The host, Bailey, was friendly and helpful. House was very comfortable, even the pull out sofa was comfortable sleeping for our teen. Loved spending mornings on the back deck, watching all the birds! Beach accesses only a few minutes walk away, saw whales, turtles, outer tidepools have lots of fish, beautiful sunsets. On arrival late in the evening, Bailey and Baki had stocked the fridge with breakfast (bacon, eggs, english muffins, an amazing, delicious fruit platter). Malhalo!!! We had a great stay and hope to be back.Christine, Alex, Maddy. Southern Alberta, Canada.

Peace on Earth
We were looking for an alternative to a busy resort stay. Puako Beach was removed on a dead end road but close to main highway, restaurants, and area attractions. The house was just as pictured. Our hosts provided food to start our stay which was appreciated as we arrived late evening after a long day of travel. Everything we needed for a day at the beach, across the street, was also available. Bring your beach shoes as the coastline is mostly rocky which you would expect on a volcanic island. We had a wonderful stay. Mahalo Bailey and Baki!

A Slice of Paradise – Great Snorkeling, Hiking and Lots of Turtles
Bailey and Baki are great hosts. Their flat is wonderfully appointed, warm and inviting. We received a sweet welcome gift and the generous fixings for our first delicious breakfast. Watching the wild birds out back from our balcony and counting the many geckos lounging about while sipping our morning coffee made for a good start into each day.
Snorkling spots are in walking distance. Visibility was mostly good and we saw a plethora of fish, moneys, nudibranchs, an octopus, and many turtles in and out of the water. We also went on many exciting hikes within reasonable driving range.
And we always enjoyed coming back to our 'home base' to refresh and relax and plan our adventures for the next day.
We hope to come back soon.

Thank you got your very kind review. The fillings were mutual, you were awesome guests, took care of everything and the birds loved you efforts at a daily feed at the food trough. and your tales of your adventures in Hawaii were terrific. Thanks again, and yes, please return. You are more than welcome, with a discount to boot as a returning favored guest.
We've visited Hawaii island quite a few times and this is our first time staying in Puako instead of in the Kohala resort condo/hotel area. I loved how quiet and peaceful it was. There's a really good snorkeling/scuba entry just a couple minutes down the road. There's bird food provided to fill the backyard feeder which attracts very large numbers of birds, we saw up to 10 wild parrots (lovebirds) at a time! The home itself was lovely, comfortable and had plenty of beach supplies in good condition, which was great because we didn't have to rent any snorkeling gear. And the kitchen was definitely the most well-stocked rental house kitchen I've ever seen. The hosts were extraordinarily generous with a welcome breakfast including a big bowl of local fresh fruit, English muffins, eggs, butter and jam, and more than enough coffee for the entire stay. They had quite a lot of other food in the kitchen as well which was really helpful to have (things like olive oil, soy sauce, garlic salt). I have stayed at many vacation rentals and I think this one has to be my favorite, will definitely be back!

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself Lisa. Thank you for such a glowing review. I love it when my guests appreciate the small touches to enhance their stay. You’re the best. Bailey 🌹🌹
We stayed at Bailey's for just over a week and cannot say enough about the many wonderful things at this home.* This is the lower level of a home, and is large and spacious with two porches, one screened and one with a swing and BBQ that looks over a peaceful green space of birds and wildlife. The kitchen was stocked better than any rental I have had on VRBO or it's main competitor that starts with "A," and was delightful.* There are boogie boards, chairs, umbrella, cooler and snorkel gear available which made it very easy and relaxing. * We walked to prime diving/snorkeling areas in minutes along with sunsets. The road is quiet and I was able to peacefully run on it daily. * Hapuna Beach is less than 15 minutes drive away with a great place to swim and boogie board/surf. If you like resorts, there is a lovely walk to the Fairmont where you can eat/drink outside. * The petroglyphs are about 1/2 mile walk away. * Bailey was a thoughtful and gracious host and we loved his sweet dog Mimi. All the other reviews about the fruit bowl were 100% correct, it (and the breakfast) were amazing.Thank you!

Puako Select Indeed!
Bailey and his lovely wife have a lovely, comfortable, lived-in, true home away from home that provided the cozy comfort my wife and I enjoy when we travel. For the most part we typically never stay in hotels anymore because of the cost, stale rooms and lack of privacy. Plus we love that feel of being in our own place. When we walked in all of the doors and windows were open (with screens of course) and the Hawaiian island winds blowing throughout. We never closed the windows at night so we could enjoy the white noise of the wind in the trees at night while we slept and wake to the chirping birds in the morning. And when we awoke, we enjoyed Bailey's amazing breakfast spread prepared and waiting for us in the fridge, as well as the coffee, not only the first morning, but each of the next three. Delightful not to have to trek to the store for your first meal of the day. The location is perfect for access to all of the local beaches, which are just a short drive away; beach chairs, cooler, towels and snorkel gear provided! The neighborhood and it's neighbors are quiet and peaceful, plus tucked away from a lot of night pollution so you can sit in the backyard and be mesmerized by the plethora of stars. Bailey also took the extra touch of personally coming by to say hello when we arrived, and to say goodbye and thank you when we left. I would not only highly recommend this place to others, but will be staying here the next time my wife and I visit. Aloha! - Bart (San Francisco)

Dear Bart. Thank you for such a kind review and I am pleased you had such a pleasant experience and were so eloquent with your words. Yes, Puako is a great place to stay while visiting Hawaii and you hit the highlights: ocean breezes, beautiful clear night skies and so peaceful. I do look forward to seeing you again.
Bailey
Excellent location for access to the ocean, we ate in most of the time. Owner was very proactive with staples in the suite and accessable. Thanks Bailey !
Absolutely splendid stay in an awesome location. It's easy to explore both North and South from the property, and we did. But we mostly just wanted to hang out near Bailey and Baki's lovely property. Wonderful attention to detail in the accommodation and most generous hosts. We loved the fresh flowers and bottled water. Wonderfully quiet location except for all the bird song...absolutely delightful. Multiple beach accesses just a short walk or a short drive away. We highly recommend the property and look forward to returning soon.

We truly love meeting guests from all over the world and being able to share our unique and beautiful corner of the world, here in Hawaii. Our experience with guests has been exceptional and the response gratifying. We have been living in Hawaii for going on 20 years where we raised our four fabulous children. Bailey First came to Hawaii as Peace Corp volunteer in '69, going to Thailand. My favorite vacation spot, is sailing in the British Virgin Islands, favorite city to eat is San Francisco with Chicago tied and favorite city to visit New York. Arts aficionado, my wife a buff fitness nut and me a movie slouch. I am Realtor in Hawaii and I also sell salted and smoked salmon from our fish days in Alaska (30yrs and counting) and spend way to much time volunteering for the arts and trying to raise $$, the bane of the arts world. and I am Fascinated by the Universe thank you Keck and Canada France Observatories, a must visit when you are here.
Why they chose this property
I am told, Its the best PUAKO BEACH listing for its price. Puako is an eclectic, TRANQUIL and HISTORIC oceanfront community, famous for its white sand beaches and turquoise warm waters populated with whales, dolphins, turtles and reef fish. Water sports abound. Bucolic, peaceful & quiet: If that what you are looking for then look no further as THIS IS IT!! You have access to our 6000sf yard with its delicious Mango trees, fruiting in summer, a small fenced area with dining table and lounge chairs and a barbecue, expansive lawn and natural plants. Additionally, our back yard opens onto thousands of acres of open and treed State land with a three mile walking fire break and unobstructed access to the land for any intrepid hiker. On occasion we have wild pigs, a flock of wild turkeys, goats and the Hawaiian owl or "Pueo" soaring in the evening air. If you love stars you will be overwhelmed by the clear non polluted night skies. We supply lawn chairs for star gazing, a must while you are here. AND birds, yes, we have birds and yes, I do feed them. You will wake up in the morning to the sound of this lovely aviary which I hope you will find as musical as I do.
What makes this property unique
Though we live upstairs, we are very quiet and with luck you won't hear a sound. We will be available to assist you with any and all issues including best beaches, best places to snorkel, best restaurants in the area and best luxury hotels to visit as well as our too-many-to-count visitor attractions. We enjoy the company of our guests and will be here to meet your needs. Folks often ask about the whales and yes, they are in abundance during the winter months (late December to early April) and lovely to watch from the shore as they breech with frequency and often you can see them jumping from the ocean. Our weather is mostly sunny with the occasional rain shower, and temperatures ranging from the low 70s F (21 C) to mid 80s F (30 C) during the winter and 80s F (30 C) to 90s F (35 C) in the short summer months. It is a comfortable 15 minute walk south along the ocean to the Fairmont Orchid hotel with its excellent restaurants (though access to resort facilities are restricted to guests). A mile walk or drive north on Puako Beach road brings you to our small local grocery store which is open from 8am to 7pm daily. Puako Beach road is about three miles long and dead ends at a County park. It is a popular three mile walking and biking area. There is Beach Access every 1/4 mile which makes for 12 beach/reef access points (with great snorkeling and turtle viewing) including the County park and County boat launch. Close local beaches include: BEACH 69 aka WAIALEA BAY STATE PARK (10min)-our personal favorite with good snorkeling and boogie boarding, bathroom facilities and lots of shade, SPENCER BEACH (15min)-very kid friendly, MAUNA KEA beach (12min)-an amazing crescent of white sand in a clear calm cove, and HAPUNA BEACH STATE PARK (10min)-the Islands most famous and popular -white sand, great boogie boarding and picnic tables and BBQing facilities. (See pictures) The nearby resorts offer abundant dining and shopping opportunities.
