A unique, very distinctive and spacious early 19th century house whose walls descend into the sea. Positioned between King Charles Quay and the adjacent Custom House Quay, from which Packet Ships departed destined throughout the British Empire. Darwin returned to Falmouth, where news of Trafalgar also came ashore, and Lord Byron departed from it. Sea views from all windows on both sides allow you to watch the hubbub of yachts, tall ships, ferry boats, cruise liners and more. A short wander brings you to all amenities. Mooring for yachts is available within 100m.

Three storey accommodation currently offers 4 ensuite bedrooms sleeping 7, and an additional guest/general WC. All rooms with sea views.

With much to see and do the house is perfect for year round holidays. Enjoy the many attractions which Falmouth has to offer within a short walking distance, including restaurants, family pubs, specialist shops, art galleries, National Maritime Museum, Pendennis Castle, wide sandy beaches and coves, multi-screen cinema, leisure and fishing trips, public pool and bowling. Walk to the southwest coast path going west, or take the quayside ferry to the path going east. Falmouth is ideal for touring Cornwall with a short drive to Lands End, Tate Gallery at St Ives, surfing beaches on the North Cornish Coast, Minack Theatre, Lizard peninsula, World Heritage Mining sites, Flambards Theme Park and The Eden Project.

No problem to stop right outside the door to load/unload, with two public car parks within 5 minutes walk (£26.30/week summer, £15.80/week winter), or free street side parking.

Welcome pack with driving instructions, where to find keys, and background information sent by email a couple of weeks before arrival. All this plus more contained in an Information Folder within the house.

Charm and Modern Convenience

The location of the house is on the water with beautiful harbor views. Large and inviting, it is right in the heart of the tourist area with easy access to shops and restaurants, as well as tour buses and ferries. The house was very clean when we arrived. There even was a welcome gift of cookies on the kitchen table. The space was bigger than I imagined. It covers three floors with four bedrooms and five bathrooms! There also is sink and shower in the smallest bedroom. Though the house seems to be older, it has been updated to modern standards in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms, while maintaining its original charm. The weather was a little warmer than normal and we were able to get a cool cross-breeze with open windows. These windows also are a great sound block for any noise from the street, which was very little. The kitchen had all the appliances, dishes, pots and pans that we needed. There even is an apparently brand-new non-stick skillet that is the best I’ve ever used! There is ample refrigerator and freezer space. Perfect for a full house. The owners were very responsive to our inquiries before and during our visit. I highly recommend the Old Quay House for any visitors to Falmouth. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there!

Lovely Property, needs a refresh in some areas.

We enjoyed our stay in Falmouth and the house was in an ideal location. Lots going on in this location and it can be a bit noisy in the evenings. If you want to be in the middle of town you have to expect some disturbance. The house faces a busy pub. Without wanting to be to picky, the house is in need of a deep clean. The housekeeper needs to up her gain as in certain areas it wasn’t great. We decided not to complain as we are not that type of guest but there is room for big improvement. The owners also need to carry out some basic maintenance as there is a quite a few issues in the house. I am not going to list all of these but the two that concerned us most was that all doors inside the house should be able to be shut closed especially in bathrooms and bedrooms for privacy. Furthermore removing thermostatic valves on radiators so that we were unable to turn them on or up is not great for your cold guests. We did experience cool wet weather in June and it would of been nice to tweak the heating a little as the house being an old building gets cold and we were unable to do so. I will mention that the gas fire in the lounge was wonderful and we used it on two evenings. We did not raise any complaints with the owners or receive any communication from them. A courtesy call or text to ensure we were comfortable would of been appreciated during our stay. With the issues we had we would not choose to stay at this particular property again, which is a great shame as we will be returning to the area in the autumn. I am sure other guests will enjoy this property especially in the warm summer months.

Thank you for your comments. They are appreciated and most valuable. Working overseas we do rely on guests to keep us up-to-date, and hence always write the day before arrival in order to welcome guests and encourage contact as soon as any issues are found either by telephone/sms to the caretaker whose number we give, or by email to ourselves. We also follow up with all guests again after their stay. We note you would have also liked to be contacted during your short stay, and that is a suggestion we are thankful to receive. Although the information folder in the house contains a notice "Any Problems?" listing the number to our caretaker, we respect that you chose not to make contact during your stay, or to respond to the follow up email, and we regret we were unable to solve problems at the time or to discuss afterwards. We appreciate that as you say you are not the type of guest to complain. Nevertheless, we continue to encourage all guests to make contact immediately problems are encountered so that we can deal with issues straight away. Your complaints after the event we very much take on board. To deal with the specific points you raise, the radiator temperature is adjusted only using the themostat on the wall in the living room, as the individual radiator thermostats were superceded during system upgrade. As they no longer function and may thus confuse guests, they have been removed. This information is given in the information folder in the house. Regardless, we would have been most happy to advise of the thermostat in the living room immediately if you had contacted either the caretaker whose number is given, or ourselves by email. Whilst we are sad we were unaware of the difficulty and unable to assist at the time, we are happy that the fire worked as intended, which ensures warmth both in the living room areas and the bedrooms above. We do apologise that indeed one bedroom door did not close properly during your stay, being that to the groundfloor bedroom. An issue unfortunately left behind by a decorating team after working on that room recently. It is the only room on that floor, and so I am glad your privacy would not have been compromised. The cleaning issue is a very serious one, one which we regret deeply. Your comments have been forwarded directly to the cleaning team, and I can assure you that changes have been made to that team as a direct consequence of your complaint to seek to prevent such occurences in future. Of course we regret that you might choose not to stay in future. Should you change your mind, we believe you will find your comments will all have been taken on board, and you would not encounter those issues again. We do hope that despite the problems you did enjoy your stay in Falmouth and we thank you very much for your booking.

Wonderful property in Falmouth

My family and I stayed at the Old Quay House for a week during a family holiday. It is a wonderful place to stay. The house is very spacious with great views over Falmouth Harbour especially from the large living room. Each bedroom has an ensuite which was a great touch. The location is perfect for exploring this lovely Cornish town within walking distance of all amenities including great restaurants and beaches. The hosts were wonderful with great communication beforehand including personalised directions and check-in information. They also provided a parking permit for our car so we could park next to the property which made exploring further afield so much easier. Thank you again for a wonderful stay. Highly recommended

Will be returning for sure!

We absolutely loved this property! The house is in a fantastic position firstly, lovely views, easy access to shops & pubs etc (it’s actually bang opposite a great pub find!) The house itself is great, very spacious - we particularly loved the living/dining/kitchen area. Fully equipped with everything you could possibly need - plus anything you might not have thought to have packed! The bedrooms were good also, slight moan with the bathrooms as there’s very little ventilation for 3 bathrooms on the top floor. Other than that beds are comfy, everything was fairly clean and we would most definitely love to return here! Fantastic communication from the owners (even though they weren’t in the UK!) Thank you :)

Beware! See further detail below.

Location perfect, unfortunately the property is not as described and the landlord does not respond to correspondence. Beware! It is suffering from long term neglect. Only one shower is fully functional (out of 4), just two working televisions (out of 4). The dishwasher was not working on our arrival and following an immediate phone call to the caretaker it was repaired on the fourth day of our stay. There was an overpowering stench of dog’s urine in the ground floor bedroom. There are serious safety issues – loose carpet on the stairs, in the ground floor ensuite there is one spotlight not working and another over the toilet hanging out of its housing. The tumble dryer filter was compacted with lint and the condenser full to the brim. This list is not exhaustive but we have made all of our concerns known to the owner. Our immediate concerns were brought to the attention of the owner via email within twenty hours of our arrival. We received a response thirty hours later claiming he was on holiday in a remote desert region without reliable internet connection. He stated ‘It isn’t acceptable’ and ‘the caretaker should be able to take care of all’. He also suggested that the smell was related to storm/tide drainage, however the smell was from within the room not outside and a neighbour confirmed there were no such issues in the area. The owner also advised us he would write properly to us as soon as he was able. Needless to say we heard nothing more from the caretaker or owner for the remainder of our stay. After arriving home we sent a further email requesting compensation as we would not have been attracted to or booked this property if it had been correctly advertised. The property does not command the rental asked as so many of the basic facilities were unavailable. We gave him five working days to respond and seven working days later we are still waiting. The owner lives abroad and is happy to take your money and bluff his way through any complaints he receives. He has a total lack of respect for his guests and displays no responsibility as an owner.

Response from VrboOwner on 4 April 2020
We take guests concerns very seriously and are saddened by the review. Rachael D booked the house, although the review was prepared by co-guest Mr Leather, Rachael not taking part in discussions. She raised issues upon arrival, but of matters now reviewed she raised the dishwasher, smell, and one shower. Sadly not loose carpet, light fittings, or dryer which we would have resolved. We contacted the caretaker who sent a dishwasher engineer (in peak week), opinioned the shower likely being turned beyond its limits, the cause of the smell as very occasional high water drainage (the neighbour referred to recently moved in after 100+k renovations, and is further away), and would call to check all. We did not bluff or show lack of respect. Quite the opposite. He says the house is not as described, but does not say how. Bedroom TV provision is criticised, but this is additional to that advertised, part of upgrading. In a 4 room 7 bed house the single room is now the only one without DVD. Thankfully the weather was glorious that week. Mr. Leather is annoyed by delayed response, implying disbelief with the "claim" we are in a remote location. Our occupations take us there. When the email was sent we were out of mobile range, with no internet. Hence we give caretaker contact details (prior to arrival, and at the house), describing in the advert we are often in Africa. Bringing all to the caretakers attention at the time would likely have helped. The compensation demand email was replied to within 5 minutes of accessing it, as have all other emails. He deserves better than only the cursory response our situation at that time would allow, as we explained. With items brought to attention only now we were unable to correct things before his departure. The fully deserved proper response benefited from awaiting our return. Communication continues at time of writing. It is said the house is not worth the price. Repainted throughout in 2018, in past years this was set by holiday agents. The current price is as before minus their commissions, etc. Claiming the price should be lower is presumably with other motive. Despite our robust response we do hope their stay was in reality good. We are glad to hear such complaints, as we then can improve the experience. We encourage all guests to bring things to the caretaker during their stay, rather than afterwards as Mr. Leather does. The house is our only home, and we are very keen that guests are happy when they stay.

Convenient quayside location with great views

What a great location. The parking that comes with the rental is essential. So much to do we didn't move the car for five days. There's so much choice of places to eat and drink outside the front door, all we tried were excellent, especially Fuel. The accommodation is on three floors. Every room has at least a shower. Noise is contained by double glazing but light is a problem if you're a light sleeper. Views of the harbour and dock yards are amazing, so many great photos! Anything we could have needed (espresso machine was a treat), was here and the settees so comfortable. I'm sure we'll be back.

A Great Place to Stay

This was by far the best house we have rented this year! It was spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable and in a good location right by the quay. The owners were really helpful providing information about the house, parking facility and about the local area. All our sub-contractors loved it and had nothing but good things to say about their 5 week stay here.

Great house, perfect location.

The Old Quay House has everything you need for a relaxing and enjoyable stay in Falmouth. Very clean, comfortable and well equipped. The location is perfect..in easy walking distance of bars, shops, beaches and the train station. We received excellent and helpful communication from the owners beforehand about the house, town and directions to the quay, with parking arrangements. The 'welcome pack' along with wine and flowers were appreciated on our arrival. Thank you.

Thank you Julie. We are glad the house met your expectations after your long journey from Derbyshire. Falmouth is indeed a very convenient town, most things you would need being within walking distance. Our best wishes to the rest of the group. Sophia and Kevin

About the host

Hosted by Kevin and Sophia

Host profile image
Sophia and Kevin, together with Gareth and Seana.

Kevin was born & grew up in the south-west, and together with Sophia who is Greek bought the Old Quay House as their only home. Working away in Africa for many months each year allows them to let the Old Quay House for holidays, hoping others will enjoy the south-west and their home as much as they do.

Why they chose this property

Growing up in the south-west, this is simply home. Falmouth is a fantastic place. The high street is yards away, with supermarkets, restaurants, cafe´s, galleries, craft shops, cinema, pubs, and so forth. The National Maritime Museum is a short stroll, the sandy Gyllingvase beach a ten minute walk, and the sandy Swanpool beach a further five. Pendennis castle, the harbour, recreation centre, and much more are a saunter away. The coastal footpath can be joined going west, or take a ferry from the adjacent quayside to go east.

Further afield there is the Lizard peninsula with its coves and tea shops, Penzance and Land´s End with the Minnack Theatre, the north coast and its surf beaches, the Cornish Mining Heritage sites and mines that can be visited, the Eden Centre, fishing villages stretching up the coast, and more.

What makes this property unique

The Old Quay House was built two hundred years ago as part of a seaman´s mission, and became the residence of the preacher at the quayside Bethel. On one side the rear of the house drops directly down into the sea in King Charles Quay, and on the other side the front door is within yards of Custom House Quay and the 16th century Chainlocker public house. Wake up in the groundfloor bedroom knowing the sea is lapping a few feet away, or in the other bedrooms on the second floor overlooking the harbours. Or in the winter cosy up to the open flame fire.
