The wetland areas surrounding Bridgwater are internationally renowned for wintering wildfowl and wading birds and support numerous species of breeding birds. Nearby Shapwick Heath is an excellent example of a wetland nature reserve well worth a visit, as is the Steart Marshes on the Bridgwater Bay National Nature Reserve.
