Ghillie Cottage is tucked away in a private courtyard, set back from the main street and makes a great choice for your next Cumbrian adventure. Once an old chapel and now converted into six apartments, Ghillie Cottage has been renovated and refurbished for 2018. The good quality finish and thoughtful decoration is evident as soon as you walk in. Downstairs you have an open plan living/dining room leading to a brand new fitted kitchen for preparing that perfect meal. A lovely spiral staircase, a real feature of the property, leads you to two bedrooms and a modern bathroom. The property sleeps up to four adults in a double bedroom and a twin bedroom, both of which have a TV and plenty of character. The property is aptly named Ghillie’s Cottage due to its links to the fishing rights on the River Derwent that are owned by the family. A ghillie being a person who acts as an attendant to someone on a hunting expedition, or in this case, a fishing trip. The River Derwent is a highly sought after river amongst anglers providing rich pickings of salmon and trout. As long as you have a National Rod Licence you may fish on the family’s beat. Details of the location and costs are available on request.
The popular Cumbrian town of Cockermouth, birthplace of William Wordsworth, is just a short walk away. In fact, the National Trust Wordsworth House is just a few minutes walk. Your nearest supermarket and a couple of pubs serving great food and local cask ales are also a few minutes walk away. The main town centre is also easily reached on foot. Cockermouth is a thriving market town full of hidden surprises at every turn. It boasts a great selection of pubs, quaint restaurants, micro-breweries, local craft shops, independent coffee houses, delicatessens, speciality shops and of course, well known retailers and branded stores too. If you like culture, Kirkgate Arts shows movies, arts and drama. Fancy a swim? The leisure centre is also nearby as well as local cycle hire. You’ll also find the famous Jennings Brewery nestled beneath the castle walls where the River Derwent and River Cocker meet.
Cockermouth is on the border of the Lake District National Park, so whether you like the rugged adventure of the mountains or the serenity of the seaside, you’ve got the best of both worlds. You’re also within easy reach of some glorious lakes. Take a 5 mile drive to Bassenthwaite Lake at the foot of the Skiddaw range for fantastic walks, woodland, wildlife and watersports. You’ll also find the Lakes Distillery offering tasting tours as well as the Lake District Wildlife Park just 6 miles away. The popular town of Keswick is 14 miles away and can be reached in about 20 minutes. For walkers and cyclists, you’ll love the route through Whinlatter Forest Park, or continue down the valley to Buttermere which boasts stunning panoramic scenery. If you’re not into fishing, you’ll love Ghillie Cottage. If you are into fishing, life doesn’t get much better than this! Beach 9½ miles. Shop 175 yards, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.
