Cawsand/Kingsand villages are situated on the Rame Peninsula which is also known as Cornwall s forgotten corner - and long may it be so! A village with many ancient and true stories of smugglers and shipwrecks, the pretty colour-washed cottages and narrow streets of these ancient villages have a magical feeling. Once the dividing county line between Devon and Cornwall, one almost feels in a time warp. Here are the holidays of British childhood - picnics on the beach, fishing, paddling and crabbing in rock pools.. Spectacular scenery, walking, birdwatching, painting or just lazing - it is the perfect place for the traditional family holiday. For the more energetic, there is sailing from Cawsand beach and surfing at Whitsand Bsy. An historically rich area too: King Charles and Lord Nelson both came to the village. You will notice Palmerston s Follies (military forts) built in the 18th century to keep the French at bay and the 14th-century chapel at Rame Head where a beacon blazed at the time of the Armada.
Things to Do: Do look at our own website which has a comprehensive description of things to do, come rain or shine. There are several dates when it is special to be in the village: 1 May - May Day - dating back to the 19 Century, the village is bedecked with flowers and the flower-covered Black Prince (boat) is carried through the village eventually being cast into the sea. There are children s flower garland competitions and a great community spirit celebrating the arrival of Spring. Mid August is the time for the British Fireworks Championships which take place in Plymouth and easily visible from the village. An amazing sight, not to be missed. 31 December - New Year s Eve is a special time in Cawsand when all the villagers don fancy dress and go promenading around the pubs. There are fireworks on the beach, a disco at the hotel and a fancy dress swim for Charity on New Year’s Day ! The sea temperature is usually several degrees warmer than the air - promise!
The twin villages of Cawsand and Kingsand are a convenient base for visiting many of Cornwall s tourist attractions. Google the following for more information or take a look at our website and follow Things To Do tab. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, Eden Project, newly opened Pentillie Castle, Minack Theatre and many National Trust properties: Cothele, Lanhydrock and Antony House are just a few. The South West Coast Path is a dream for walkers taking in the whole of the coast of Cornwall and beyond so don t forget your walking boots and binoculars. Visit the beautiful Grade I Listed gardens of the 800-acre Mount Edgcumbe Estate just 10 minutes walk from the house, particularly lovely in Spring. Birdwatching and sea fishing are popular too and Golf is at Whitsand Bay Country Club (wonderful views) Looe and 2 courses at St Mellion (Niklaus). Surfing nearby too (see below). The ferry from the village takes you straight into the ancient Barbican area from where the Pilgrims left, here also theatre, shops and National Marine Aquarium
Secluded Coves and Surfing: Whitsand Bay beach is an enormous stretch of sand nearly 7 kilometres long, which separates up into little secluded coves at low tide, including Tregantle, Sharrow, Freathy and Tregonhawke beaches. This is a great beach for finding your own bit of privacy if you are a couple or family. In the summer months. a Surf School runs from Tregonhawke, for all levels.
We do allow dogs but please do not allow them on the furniture or upstairs at all. Cleaning dog hairs off the furniture or the stairs will Incur an additional fee.

Beautiful cosy little cottage. Perfect location for daily swims. Had everything we needed apart from a hairdryer which is being replaced. Lots to do in the surrounding area.
We had a lovely few days in this cottage. It was well equipped and cosy and lovely to be so close to the sea. Enjoyed eating at The Bay and the Cross Hands and had fun watching the rugby with the locals at the Rising Sun!
Cosy house in great location for pubs, beaches and walking. Comfortable bed with all the kitchen amenities. Cool in winter weather but soon warms up nicely once heating understood.
Our second stay at Howton Cottage & it was just as wonderful as before. Everything about it’s quaintness & quirkiness is just delightful & being set within the stunning surroundings of Kingsand/Cawsand just adds to the magic! We could not ask for more & we cannot wait to return… hopefully sooner than later!

Thanks for the feedback Mandy, glad you enjoyed your stay and welcome back any time.
We love Cawsand and have stayed a few times but this was our first time in Howton Cottage. It's a beautiful cottage that was presented beautifully clean with lovely bedrooms, sitting room and a great kitchen. It had everything we needed. It doesn't have any outside space but the bathroom is well set up as a drying room for wetsuits, swimsuits, etc. would definitely recommend.
The cottage and the village are quaint and delightful. We arrived by train to Plymouth, then chose to take the Cawsand ferry which landed right on the beach. It was wonderful but the ferry only operates as weather permits. Be aware that you have to order a taxi in advance if you need to leave the village for major grocery shopping or sight seeing. The cottage and the entire village is not suitable for mobility impaired. Lovely location.
The cottage is in a perfect location. Cawsand and Kingsand at both really lovely places with ideal beaches. It is a shame the Cross Keys pub has closed down on the square, perhaps a reflection of the times and maybe the lack of locals. Only big minus for me was the lack of recycling in the villages. We found nothing available and so had to carry all our empty bottles, plastic and cardboard back to Leicestershire. Surely the council should be doing better than this. No reflection on the cottage though, it's Fab!
This cottage is perfect for a holiday in Cawsand. We had the most wonderful week. The cottage has everything you need and the owners are amazing at answering any questions. We will be back and would highly recommend! X
We stayed for a week and could have not asked for a better location, the cottage had all we needed and was in the right location for the seaside and local pubs. We stayed with our dog and all the places there were very dog friendly.
Thank you!
Howton Cottage is perfectly situated about 2 minutes walk from Cawsand beach. It is a quaint little place with a large kitchen and ample storage space to unpack all your gear. Adjacent to the site of the Ship pub, which is now used for pop up events, we were lucky enough to have live music on the first night of our stay with a guitarist and singer and no need for a babysitter as we listened from our own front room.
The only thing missing is some outside space, but the lack of this is typical in the village and it certainly wouldn't put us off coming back.
Cottage in ideal location. There was just two of us and a dog and found it perfectly adequate for our needs.
Lounge setup not perfect for tv watching (and tv a little small) but that was fine with us.
Local pubs and The Bay restaurant all serving lovely food. Tasty pasties from the shop in the square
No dogs on Cawsand beach during the summer but shingle beaches in Kingsand and beyond allow.
Parking is in the local car park a short distance from the front and the property. Be advised there is a charge!
We loved the area and will return

Sharon, glad you enjoyed your stay in our cottage. As you pointed out, yes the TV is just a small TV as we felt we didn’t want to dominate the lounge with a large TV as the majority of our guests like the character lounge and don’t use the TV while they stay as they like to feel they are away from home. Sounds like this wasn’t a problem for you anyway.
With regards to the beach, yes dogs are not allowed on one of the beaches during the summer months easter to end of sept. But the other beaches allow dogs all year round as well as the many fields and walks. Also the pubs all allow dogs, this is a very dog friendly area.
Thanks for pointing this out, we will add this extra info to our profile so people are aware in advance.
Many thanks and hope to see you back again soon.
Property conveniently located. Very damp in living room settee felt actually wet it was so damp. Heating should be on to keep it dry it improved with the heater on but not a good start. Kettle lid is broken and light bulbs in attic bedroom not working.
Very large stain on quilt cover in first floor bedroom — washed in but obvious, and whilst the bedding I think was washed it needs a jolly good boil! Very yellowed round edges. Surely there should be a rail up the stairs to the attic room and a safely gate at the top it’s very dangerous.

Sandra,
Thanks for the review, we will take all your points on board. This is very out of character with all our other positive reviews but of course we take all feedback seriously.
This is a seafront property and as such there is moisture in the air which is why we advise in the welcome notes that you leave the heating on setting 19, as with all seafront properties. We have not had other feedback about dampness and if there was an issue we would certainly address it immediately.
All of our bedding is of course professionally washed prior to every guest stay and we have had specific positive comments about our high quality bedding. We will of course replace any bedding which is marked immediately and have instructed our cleaners to do an immediate review to check all the bedding for marks.
We were not aware of the kettle lid or bulbs and will check and replace immediately if they are broken, thanks for pointing them out. This is an old fashioned character cottage and as such it has narrow windy staircases which adds to the character, there is a rail at the top of the stairs but we feel a safety gate is not necessary and would also spoil the character of the cottage and don't feel this is dangerous but again if we were to get any similar feedback from other guests then we would review this.
Many thanks
Richard and Lisa
Gorgeous cottage in the heart of Cawsand. Perfect location for a great holiday in a beautiful part of the world. Cottage has everything you need and very enjoyable to stay in.
A most charming and enchanting cottage in the centre of Cawsands minutes from beaches, restaurants, shops and pubs. Beautifully presented and wonderfully equipped. Ideal for families including children. The owners were most helpful and answered our emails promptly. We enjoyed our stay immensely. Highly recommended.
