About this property

Sunny Lake Sutherland Gateway to Olympic National Park

Located on the sunny North-shore of Lake Sutherland. Enjoy expansive views of the lake and a central location with access to all that Olympic National Park has to offer. (O.N.P. visitor information center at Lake Crescent is just over 5 mi. away).

Many of our visitors enjoy peaceful mornings and relaxing evenings at the lake, then pack lunches, and enjoy short day trips all over the Peninsula. Spread out your maps and explore! Beaches, Mountains, Rivers, Rainforests, Lakes, Waterfalls, all just minutes away.

The open floor plan offers lake views from nearly every seat. Clean and uncluttered, the comfortable furniture, quality beds and linens, ensure you will relax and enjoy your time here. The kitchen and appliances are very nice and stocked with the basics. Propane and Charcoal BBQ's are clean and ready for grilling on the BBQ deck, plus there are tables for dining inside & out.

The expansive dock is private (not a shared dock) and is equipped with 2 swim ladders and several incredibly comfortable Adirondack chairs hand-made by the owner. This is the perfect place for spending days in the sun and on the water. After the sun goes down, enjoy some great stargazing from the dock.

Easy access from Highway 101 via a short paved road that leads right to the property. There is also a small group of private roads that inter- connect and allow for long walks around much of the North Shore of the lake.
Drive right up to the door!

Although we love them, please no pets and no Smoking.

Perfect!!

This is a perfect location. House was super clean and had everything we needed. The lake was so nice. Do note that the two bedrooms are open at the top to the rest of the house, so you can hear every word said in every room other than the bathroom, which does have full walls. Not an issue for us. Everything was in such good order! Will defiantly recommend!

Relaxing and lovely stay

We had a great time at this house. The house has a beautiful view. We used the kayaks and had a wonderful time kayaking. The house is very clean and is at a good distance from Hoh rainforest, Sol duc falls and Lake Sutherland. I requested the owners for a packnolay and they arranged it for me. They also answered my queries immediately and called me on the first day to make sure I was able to locate the house and get in. I would recommend this place if you are planning on visiting Olympic National park.

Incredible experience

The listing didn’t give it all that it could had. Perfect place for a small family. Lake was beautiful! Didn’t expect kayaks but took advantage. Make sure you pick up groceries prior to your arrival. They’re were many items you may have forgotten but need to count on preparing your meals which we like to do. Wish the bridge wasn’t out of commission but managed around it. Loved the Sol Duc Falls Trail the best. Mount Storm kicked our butts. Would love to come back to this perfect property.

A wonderful spot

We recently stayed here to explore the Olympic Peninsula. There were four of us - two couples- and we were very comfortable. The Murphy bed could also be used to sleep two more people. The location is as advertised. The main window looks west over a scenic lake. It’s a great spot to relax at the end of the day. The water was chilly in June but refreshing and crystal clear. The owners are wonderful. They are cummunicative and accommodated a change in our rental. The location is about 20 min from Port Angeles and the northern entrance to Olympic NP. Great spot.

Hiking on Olympic Peninsula

We had a wonderful time at the Sutherland Lake House. The owners have made the house warm and Congo with all the amenities you would need. The view is gorgeous! We enjoyed eating outside at table and watching the sun go down on the chairs on the dock. We hiked in Hoh Rainforest and visited beaches. I would go back again!

Wonderful Place

We really enjoyed our time at the Burwell's lake house this past weekend. The place is perfect for a family of 4, and the proximity to water is perfect. Extremely clean and well cared for house, we couldn't have asked for more. The kayak was really great for mornings on the lake, when the water is glass still and mist is still rising from it. We cannot wait to go back!

Excellent place for those exploring Olympic!

This property was truly wonderful! The lake views are stunning, yet relaxing. The house has everything you'll need and then some! One small note: the wi-fi is rather slow and even outpaced by 4g data connection, but overall the perfect place to disconnect anyway! The location is perfect for accessing any of Olympic's many features, and is quite close specifically to Hurricane Hill and Storm King among others. We certainly hope to come back for our next Olympic getaway!

Beautiful lake vacation

We were supposed to go to Lake Louise but couldn’t because of Covid. So grateful that this Lake Sutherland cabin saved the vacay! We literally didn’t leave the cabin/lake for the five days we were there. Just kayaked (provided) and relaxed in the clean cozy cabin. Loved it!

Perfect base camp for Olympic National Park

This home was perfect for our family of four. The kitchen had all the supplies we needed and then some. The home is clean and well cared for. The view is stunning. Kayaks were used every night we were there. The internet is spotty, not what we’re used to, but expected given the location. Our family had a fantastic time. I would recommend this home to anyone traveling to that area.

Great Stay In A Truly Scenic Setting

My wife and I just spent six days in this cottage. Recently remodeled, we loved the floor plan with the oversized kitchen/living/dining area. This unit has really nice high-end appliances throughout. The view of the lake and the surrounding mountains really add to the overall good feeling about this place. Beds are very comfortable. The location is quiet and convenient to Port Angeles and the National Park. Neighbors are friendly. Communicating with the owner was never a problem. We would definitely stay here again!

Majestic setting

The exquisite and ever-changing light on the lake and the mountains was a delight. We enjoyed glimpsing a resident eagle, and the ducks and geese paddling around. We found the house very comfortable and the kitchen equipped with what we needed to cook most of our meals during our 5-day stay. The location, with its proximity to Crescent Lake, Hurricane Ridge, and the lavender farms of Sequim was ideal. The hosts were responsive and helpful. The only thing to be aware of is that the bedroom walls do not go up to the ceiling and so the bedrooms are open to the kitchen and living room noise. Also, we like to sleep with the windows open and so relocated to the smaller bedroom to be further away from the high-pitched noise emitted by the septic tank. All in all, we thoroughly recommend this amazing house and wonderful hosts.

Fun, clean, views!

Owners were too kind and quick to respond, they sincerely want to ensure you are happy in their home and town. Cabin is very well cared for (so clean) and most anything you need they have provided. As with any older cabin the space is tight but very manageable. The one and only negative for us was the bedroom walls do not fully extend to ceiling creating an open space. The outside space is very pretty with AWESOME views. The deck and dock provide plenty of space for fun in the sun, kids will not get bored! Great central location for visiting Olympic Natl Park and the beauty of surrounding coastlines. The logging community is interesting to see at the Port Angeles waterlines (west side), drive through historical downtown to appreciate the history. If you love the great outdoors this is the place to be, if you prefer city life stay home!.

Picture-Perfect & Peaceful

As soon as we pulled into the driveway we were in awe of the lovely serene views of Lake Sutherland. The cabin is impeccably clean, well-furnished with comfortable beds (the kids loved the Murphy bed) and additional towels & bedding, and all the kitchen amenities needed to make this our home for 4 days. I contacted Alan before arriving to see if there was a cooler since we would be packing lunches for our long days. Alan said that there was not, but offered to meet me at the Safeway to give me one. How nice is that?! The communication with the owners was fantastic and they are definitely full of knowledge and have great advice on how to best enjoy the area. We only wish we had more time to relax at the cabin, but ONP is expansive and we were away for most of the day. The kids enjoyed kayaking around the lake, the beautiful sunsets, and the geese at dusk. We highly recommend this lovely home!

Don't Bring Kids to this Rental!

Unfortunately, we had a really bad experience here. First of all, the bedrooms aren't really bedrooms as the wall doesn't go to the ceiling- so you can hear everything and then some when trying to get to bed/wake up in the morning. This isn't described at all and quite misleading. Please check EVERYTHING when you enter the rental. Owner told me after we checked out that we should have inspected the entire space inside and out and let her know of any nicks/marks so they wouldn't be blamed on us. Who does that?! Her daughter is the housekeeper and is eager to find anything out of place to be able to charge you for it. She asked me in disgust 'do you have a dog or kids?'. Anything out of place or any indication that you used something she will seek reimbursement for. Had I known she was so unfriendly towards kids, I would never have even booked this place. I should have known something was amiss when I asked questions prior to arriving and were given answers of 'it's a VRBO policy' only to be told by VRBO that it was the owners setting those options, not VRBO. The deception runs throughout. We even went back when she texted pics of the issues she claimed were done by us. The pictures we were sent showed HUGE issues, only to find out the scratch was miniscule. We took the time to return to the rental to speak with her, but she was not open to any discussion, so I'm not sure why we were called back. We have warned friends coming to the area to find other rentals. We have stayed in many rentals over the years and never had these problems before, including the other rentals during our trip. Can't recommend strongly enough to find another place to stay other than here.

Best Relaxing Getaway w/ the Most Amazing View

It certainly is a charmer. We LOVED this place so much. The location is absolutely amazing. This is one of those postcard places. We spent 3 nights here for my 30th birthday, and it was the absolute best. The house itself is super cute and comes with everything you could need. While the bedrooms are on the smaller side the living area is very spacious, and we never felt cramped. This isn't a rental that they furnished with cheap items. It felt like we were staying at someone's home. The furniture was comfortable, the kitchen was very well stocked, and there were even toiletries in the bathroom. And the windows in the living area that look out over the lake! They are kept so clean that sitting inside is almost as good as sitting outside to enjoy the view. The waterfront was beyond anything I could have asked for. They have really nice landscaping, a large dock, tables and chairs, and other amenities we didn't even get to. We just enjoyed sitting outside and soaking it all in. My husband kept saying I feel like we're in a crater (in the best way possible). The lake is surrounded by gorgeous mountains, but they kind of part to give you a great view of the sky. This was seriously one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I would go back in a heartbeat. We had all these plans to go out and do things. We even got our passports so we could take a day trip up to Canada, but neither of us wanted to leave. My husband would eat out every meal if I let him, but even he was happy to stock up on groceries for all of our meals. We did absolutely nothing and could not have been happier. Wendy and Alan were a breeze to work with. I had messaged them before booking to see if they had a pack n play, and while they did not Wendy took care of it for me and had it waiting for us when we got there. They also sent a bunch of information regarding restaurants and things to do in the area. And they're so happy to help you out if you need anything. I texted Wendy a couple times with a few questions, and she responded so quickly with an answer. We will 100% be back.

Gateway to Olympic - but you may just want to stay there

This place was beautiful for two couples visiting the area for the first time. Furniture is comfortable, outdoor space is glorious. There is limited privacy as the bedrooms walls don’t go all the way up to the ceiling and my husband didn’t like just sharing one bathroom but the ladies were fine with it. The neighbors were super friendly too. I’d stay here again.

Perfect and Relaxing

The property was very quaint and relaxing. The beds were comfy and the home very well laid out. The rooms are small but not too small. The kitchen had all we needed and well stocked for easy cooking. The kayaks were fun and lounging on the waterfront deck had all day sun and was really gorgeous.

About the host

Hosted by Alan Burwell

Host profile image
We are Olympic Peninsula Natives. Our family has owned and enjoyed this property since 1981. It is a very special place to us and it is a great place to spend time. As the seasons change, so does the lake environment. Summers are fantastic for outdoor and watersports enthusiasts, and there is a modest amount of boating traffic. Winter, Spring and Fall seasons it remains very peaceful and the traffic on the lake is mostly all wildlife. Regardless of the season, this is a fantastic spot to enjoy all the beauty of the lake and the Olympic Peninsula.

Why they chose this property

We feel this is one of the best locations on the lake. It is easy to find, easy to drive to, and when you arrive, you will find that we are one of a very small number of properties on Lake Sutherland's North shore ( The sunny side) that offers drive- up access to the home and the lake without having to climb a large staircase. If you are considering another property we encourage you to consider this.
This location does not fall into the shadows. Many properties on Lake Sutherland only get direct sunlight for a limited time daily. The summer sun hits the dock at @ 10 AM and stays with us until sunset.

What makes this property unique

Central location. Short drive times to Olympic National Park attractions. Quick and easy access to Hwy 101 on good paved surfaces. Being able to drive right to the front door at lake level is a huge benefit.
