One of two beautiful mudbrick cottages close to the Shoalhaven River, Seven Mile Beach and Berry ... just two hours south of Sydney ... five acres, overlooking river flats and Coolangatta Mountain ... walk to a winery!
The self-contained Cottage has a nice open living area with a full equipped kitchen and a terrace with a BBQ. There is a queen-sized bed in one bedroom, a double and a single in the other bedroom and a single in the loft which is up top of the living room. The bathroom has a hot shower.
The cottages were built along passive solar principles. Most of the windows face north to let in the winter sun and there are wide eaves to block out the summer sun. Mudbricks give the cottages a high thermal mass to store heat and smooth out the day-night temperature variation. There is a gas heater in the living room for the extra chilly or cloudy days and fans help to cool down on hot summer days.
In between the cottages is a large games room where your children and you can play foozball or table-tennis, have a barbecue or just relax with a book. Enjoy the view from the terrace of each cottage and spott a beautiful bird.
Or say hi to our two friendly sheep Coco and Mama and our chooks.
Across the street from the end of our driveway is a delightfully quiet place to dangle a line into Broughton Creek, or walk a few hundred metres to its confluence with the Shoalhaven River. Just down the road is a boat ramp.
Put your canoe into Broughton Creek, paddle out into the middle of the Shoalhaven River and over to Numbaa Island. Canoe around it and be astounded by the variety and number of waterbirds. Or take part in the annual Bridge to Bridge regatta from the bridge on Coolangatta Road near Berry.
Walk along the creek, over the hill, up Coolangatta mountain, and far far away. Or just around the property looking for the endangered, green and golden bell frog. Bring your binoculars to look for Black Shouldered Kites, Wedge Tailed or Sea eagles and pelicans. One of our favourite walks is to Drawing Room Rocks, near Berry. Only a 15 minutes walk from here is Two Figs Winery - the view of the Shoalhaven River flowing from the mountains to the sea is spectacular.
One of the many delightful local drives is a circuit past Cambewarra Lookout, through Kangaroo Valley to the historic Hampden Bridge, over the mountains again to Berry, along Beach Road to Seven-Mile Beach, past Coolangatta winery and then back home again. The drive can be done in an hour, but why not take a picnic lunch and make a day of it?
Only 40 minutes away is Huskisson where you can take Dolphin cruises any time of year. And a few kilometres from there is Hyams Beach, recognised by the Guinness Book of Records for the world's whitest sands. In between are a number of beautiful calm beaches which are suitable for swimming and snorkelling.
Seven Mile Beach, Jervis Bay and Morton National Parks are all within half an hour's drive, so whether you like to explore nature near the surf, still water or the mountains, you will not be disappointed.
Now open every Sunday, Bundanon was Arthur Boyd's home. His studio is set up the way he left it and it doesn't take much imagination to visualise him there, painting the beautiful vistas of his beloved Shoalhaven. Book first at the Information Centre on (02) 4421 0778

The booking was for Christmas, our most popular season for bookings, and we were told two days before they were due to come that they needed to cancel. I will not mention why they cancelled but we need a month's notice before the booking date is cancelled to allow a refund.
Relaxing stay in a well-designed cottage with lovely hosts. Chickens, sheep, rural outlooks and flowering gardens. Close to Berry, beach and national park.
We had everything we needed. Very comfortable and clean. Good beds and plenty of hot water.

My husband and I travelled down from Qld for a wedding and we couldn’t have picked a more beautiful place to stay. The cottage was very comfortable and host Alan was very welcoming. The scenery was amazing. Our stay was peaceful, relaxing and tranquil. Highly recommend
A delightfully quiet, calm and easy stay in Back Forest was just what I needed! Brilliantly comfortable bed, outstanding water pressure in the shower and a cosy sofa for lazing about on.
Close to everything needed, well equipped and peaceful. Can't wait to get back.
Great location close to Berry and Shoalhaven Heads and wineries. We couldn't find the sheep. We saw the 2 chooks. Nice place for a longer term stay and kid friendly.
Loved the setting. We spent most of our stay quietly sitting on the covered verandah …just enjoying where we were … We loved watching the birds. Our favourites were the fairy wrens, who were very busy hopping about in the garden.
The cottage was comfortable and had everything we needed.
Cute little cottage away from busy towns. Would of loved to of sit out and look over at the mountain but the front hedge was a bit tall so could take in the view.
As lighting was very dim and was impossible to read a book.
But otherwise great getaway.

very quiet. Pretty garden.
It was a bit cool inside as it’s winter now. Only one oil heater.
It’s marketed as passive solar fit ceiling is vey high so sun effect on cold tiles was minimal .
I stayed for 7 days but will try something different next time. Very good winery up a quiet road. Walkable but closes at 5pm

Ok but would not return
Property is ok but elements need work, not inviting, hot water lasted 3 minutes. Very poorly lit. Uncomfortable bed. Not an overly enjoyable stay! Photos posted are somewhat misleading.
From the outside it looked like an abandoned residence…. Booking was made for 3 adults and 1 child yet had to pay additional via a private transfer for the child…overall a disappointing stay!

Only Juli has sent such a misleading review. She obviously thought she could bring an extra guest for nothing. Nor did she read about the need to flick the switch when a gas cylinder runs out. Everyone else says that the cottages are just as beautiful as in our photos.
We had a relaxing weekend away from real life. The property was great, although I would recommend taking your slippers if staying in winter and overly sensitive to the cold! There is a heater in the lounge room and heated blankets on the two main beds which is nice. We were able to cook breakfast and dinner with no hassles. My personal fave aspect of the property was being able to hang out with the cow and sheep. I spoke to both owners of the property over the weekend whilst watching the animals, and both were encouraging to pat the animals if I wanted :-) I would also recommend getting outside for the sunset - I was treated to a beautiful backdrop whilst hanging out with Mr Brown Cow and the two sheep. Beautiful little spot which is perfect if you are looking to get away from city life.
Very welcoming host, Alan was friendly and accommodating to make sure we had a great stay. We found everything was as described on website, only surprises were pleasant ones.
Lovely place to stay. Quaint mudbrick cottage but very modern inside. All the facilities needed for a relaxing 3 days stay. Pleasant and helpful owners on site. Ran out of wash machine liquid and shower gel but no big deal. Sitting on patio with a cuppa and gazing over the fields, flower beds and watching wildlife and birds helped us de-stress in midst of a tough time for all. Highly recommended.
A very peaceful location and no barking dogs. Great little abode with powerful shower and gas heating. Comfortable bed and good variety of movies. Lovely to look out on Gods creation and enjoy.
